June 26, 2008 - With Metal Gear Solid 4 confirmed at half a million sales in Japan and one million in Europe, the big question is, just how many copies has the game sold overall. While we don't have sales figures just yet, we do know the game's shipped number: three million.

Famitsu.com, in its coverage from a Sony investor meeting in Tokyo today, reported that the game has topped this milestone in worldwide shipped units. Speaking at the meeting, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai also noted that the game helped shift hardware.

The recent buzz in the industry is that the upcoming Metal Gear movie is going to star Christian Bale but grapevine suggest otherwise for they say this movie is planning out to be fully computer generated with live voice actors and is presumably going to be a remake of the very first Metal Gear released on the MSX, which introduces Solid Snake as the main protagonist for the long running series.

Free London newspaper Metro has given critically acclaimed PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 a paltry three stars out of five, slamming the "utterly overblown" plot and gameplay that "somehow manages to be both rubbish and exceptional at the same time".

Metro, which is given out free to mainly London-based commuters every morning, said of Kojima's epic: "Solid Snake is back, older, wiser but unfortunately, if gameplay is anything to go by, more arthritic and boring."

We can't imagine Konami will be pleased by the review. Equating each star out of five to two points on an out of 10 scale, Metro has awarded the game a six out of 10, which is the lowest MGS4 review score we've seen so far.

Speaking in an interview with 1UP a week before the game's release, MGS4 assistant producer Ryan Payton said there is "still a lot of room for filling in the gaps as far as Big Boss is concerned." When asked about the possibility of a Metal Gear Solid 5, Payton responded, "There are some misunderstandings that this is the final Metal Gear game. But it's really the final chapter of the Solid Snake story. That's all."

"I'm happy we could wrap up Snake's story in MGS4," Payton stated earlier in the interview, continuing, "because it gets to the point where if we continue on with Metal Gear Solid 5 with more Solid Snake adventures, we'll get to the point where the game has absolutely no basis in reality. I do like the idea that this character has had four or five big missions and then that's when it ended, rather than have 20 missions where there's no chance in hell a secret agent could ever survive.
