MAGblog writes: As we announced last week, we have extended our MAG beta program beyond its original November 20 stop date. What we didn't tell you, though, is what that means for you and the other testers who are involved in the program – so here's everything you need to know about the next phase.

First things first: As of this morning, we've updated the MAG beta to version 1.46. This upgrade brings a number of new things to the table, including:

* Our highly-anticipated 256-player Domination mode in addition to 64-player Sabotage.
* Reductions in the beta download sizes by more than 30%!
* Extensive tuning to the weapons for all three PMCs to better balance the factions.
* An updated experience curve for leveling that helps new and inexperienced players.
* A huge number of updates, revisions and fixes that reflect the feedback given to us by testers in previous betas

Another important bit of information to note is when the MAG Beta program will end – which will be at the strike of Midnight (Pacific Time) on December 5.

Yes, shooter fans, as clichéd as it may sound, because of your overwhelming requests to extend our beta period, we've gone ahead and done it. While Infinity Ward is abandoning dedicated servers, the guys and gals over at Zipper who are developing the biggest war game to ever grace any gaming console, decided that there are too many benefits to not use them.

Because of Infinity Ward's decision, PC gamers have launched a petition that over 100,000 people have signed. And although the studio gave a response, it seems there's no turn of heart from Robert and the gang. Should they change their minds and stick with the servers? Certainly you can't just give millions of PC owners your back.

Zipper interactive sees it differently, and speaking to DigitalFoundry, Zipper said it does a whole lot more good than bad to use dedicated servers.

My biggest gripe was the grenade physics, they feel clunky and their bounce effects are very strange, but aside from that, the controls feel incredibly intuitive and smooth, even though the weapons feel somewhat light. ConnectedConsoles: When Sony put up a competition for over 17,000 codes for the MAG Beta, Sony didn't think it would turn into this much of a fuss. Two days ago, the European SOCOM & MAG Franchise Producer Shijima said that everyone who signed up for the competition would get a code yesterday around 3pm BST. This only seems to be the matter for some. Thousands of PS3 fanatics got theirs, thousands of others didn't. Today, Shijima has still given those waiting hope by posting a message on the official PlayStation forums.

So when a reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, picked up a stack of codes for the MAG beta at PAX this year and sent them in as a gift for other Ars Technica readers, I was tempted to do the right thing and give them away. But I decided not to. To hell with that. I'm keeping all of them.

Earlier today, Zipper Interactive prepped for an influx of new beta participants as the closed MAG beta opened up to Qore annual subscribers, SCEE lottery winners, frequent forum posters, and select media. They also launched a new patch that essentially was comprised of the entire game, so they could further test MAG's higher player count matches. The PlayStation community had counted down to this day since it was announced late last month.

However, a quick look at Sony's track record of launching online multiplayer games and anyone could see that launching a massive 3GB patch while admitting thousands of new players would be a recipe for disaster and disappointment.

A multiplayer beta for Sony's 256-player online shooter, MAG: Massive Action Game, is currently under way, but you're not invited.

Reports of a "MAG Beta" showing up on people's now-playing status on PSN are cropping up, reported to be the profiles of Sony employees.

Sony confirmed to CVG that it is indeed a "closed Beta" for "internal staff only", so you've got no chance of getting on it yourself. But it could be a sign that the expected public beta test will be with us sooner rather than later?

caliblue15 from www.blueraycenter.com has found a new Sony member that is part of the M.A.G. Beta. Pictures are after the link. caliblue15 has blacked out most of the name as to not give away information that shouldn't be but left enough that shows its a Playstation employee.

Edit: New Info: It seems the Beta can only be played at certain times ala Fat Princess.

Sony is knee deep in massively multiplayer online games right now, with titles like MAG, The Agency, and DC Universe Online all set to be released within a year. It seems like gamers may be getting their hands on at least two of these games a bit earlier than expected though. An anonymous source, who attended the recent Sony event at Seattle, has told us that betas for both MAG and The Agency are due out 'soon' - as in 'E3 soon'.
