IGN AX08: Solid Snake Discusses Lost Planet - Hayter discusses film adaptation of the popular Capcom game (News)

IGN writes: "As one of AX's most distinguished guests of honor, voice actor/screenwriter David Hayter was the focus of some the convention's most interesting and crowd drawing panels. On Friday, Hayter hosted an open Q&A panel with an audience of several thousand enthusiastic fans.

While a majority of the questions were related to the Metal Gear Solid game franchise and countless requests to recite lines as Snake, Hayter did make mention of two new projects he is engaged in: an unannounced action/adventure film that he will likely direct, and a screenplay for the film adaptation of Capcom's Lost Planet. As of June, Hayter was engaged in preliminary talks to draft the latest game-to-film, however, when we spoke to him at an press exclusive panel this afternoon, it would seem that Lost Planet is closer to fruition than previously thought.

"It's not entirely confirmed yet," said Hayter. "But we are just closing the deal with Warner Bros. for me to adapt Lost Planet." Unfortunately, due to Hayter's contractual agreements, we were unable to obtain more specific information about the film. However, we did get a chance to probe into Hayter's approach to adapting games to film, having now been slated to write the adaptation for Lost Planet, and a treatment for the potential adaptation of Metal Gear Solid."

Four comics are on the way, and so far, two have been named in Bionic Commando and Lost Planet. Published by Devil's Due, these two comics, plus the identities of the remaining two, will make their debut soon at the San Diego Comic Con.
The conversion process has blurred the game’s textures - especially the once-subtle snow effects - and its framerate stutters when larger enemies fill the screen. Capcom promise that both aliasing and slowdown are being addressed, but even if the conversion were perfect, we still wouldn’t be huge fans of Lost Planet. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which releases on PS3 on February 29 (Feb 25 in the States), has picked up a mandatory 20-minute installation process before the game can be played, according to reports.

The upcoming Lost Planet from Capcom is joining the ranks of Devil May Cry 4 and Everybody's Golf, coming with a 5GB installation on the PS3 which can take up to twenty-minutes to complete. The good thing about this though is that the PS3 game has lightning fast load-times following the installation.

The 5GB install that Capcom put on Lost Planet: Extreme Condition has been receiving quite a bit of negative press. We have been fortunate enough though to have received a pre-release copy of Lost Planet from Capcom, and have to report that the 5GB install is well worth it.
We will be working overtime to correct the issue and expect to upload a new version to the PlayStation Network as soon as possible that accurately reflects the incredible online features of the game. For those of you who have already downloaded the demo, the servers are being taken down until the new version is ready to go. Capcom is looking to recreate that success for the PS3. The Japanese PS Store has been updated with a brand new online-enabled demo of the game. Of course, you'll need a Japanese PSN account to access it, but we're certain that Capcom USA will release a similar demo in the future.

"I guess Capcom is looking for a way to entice PS3 owners who haven't played Lost Planet yet on either the Xbox 360 or PC. The PS3 version of the game will allow you to play as Luka, the female lead from the game. Yeah, not the greatest bonus character ever, that's for sure. Especially when there's already pantsless Frank West and Mega Man available as playable characters. No word yet on if she lives on the second floor, upstairs from you."

Disappointed PS3 fans expecting more were dismayed by the idea of yet another port, and threw a collective tantrum on the internet. Well, at least Capcom's making a smart move by pricing next year's port at a discount price.

If Capcom's official store is to be believed, the game will launch for only $40 -- that's $20 less than the standard retail price for games.
