LittleBigPlanet - first look

Yarn dolls create new worlds and our jaws hit the floor

While the main focus is on creativity, LittleBigPlanet is more than just a sandbox full of weird toys to put together in interesting ways. It'll also enable players to create full-on game levels for other players to download, run around in and rate using the game's community features. We saw one of these in action, a remarkably complex run through a couple of castles filled with destructible obstacles, moving platforms, user-created dynamic lighting and cool physics puzzles that took four onscreen players to solve. The level was a showcase for all kinds of cool stuff, ranging from a giant skateboard to tethered jetpacks that enabled the four players to work together and lift a giant snail shell.

The yarn-men themselves seem to be pretty versatile even when they're not creating stuff, able to vault over obstacles, shove objects out of the way and use creative means to get ahead - like, say, using a giant rolling orange to build momentum for a jump. Their arms will apparently be controlled by the individual analog sticks, which can either wave to or slap at other yarn-men, depending on how fast they're pushed.

LittleBigPlanet isn't scheduled to hit stores until sometime in 2008, although a demo is scheduled to hit the PlayStation Network sometime this fall. Keep an eye on our news ticker to find out when, and in the meantime, check out the LittleBigPlanet footage below:
