LittleBigPlanet - first look

Yarn dolls create new worlds and our jaws hit the floor

The demo we saw began with a little brown yarn-man standing around in a 3D space that was empty except for some rugged terrain and a few sheets hanging in the background. Not satisfied with this, the presenters used a simple-looking cut-and-paste-style interface to quickly and effortlessly call up random objects to shove around realistically, including walls, gears, balls and oranges. Things got interesting when one of them stuck a gear to the front of a wall, at which point the little yarn-man could grab the cog's edges and swing, or climb on top and start running to get the thing spinning.

Before long, another little yarn-man - this one dressed like Evel Knievel - dropped in, and the two started competing to slap stickers and weird little star-shaped flowers onto every available surface and object, including each other. Evel eventually stuck a pair of star-shaped antennae onto the first yarn-man's head, which prompted it to grin adorably, and the antennae stayed in place and bounced around throughout the remainder of the demo.
