LittleBigPlanet - first look

Yarn dolls create new worlds and our jaws hit the floor

For months - years, even - Sony has been pushing the PS3 as a revolutionary new platform that would change everything we thought we knew about games. We didn't believe the hype, of course, but now we've seen something that's got us thinking Sony might not have been blowing smoke up our asses after all.

LittleBigPlanet, an enchanting title from the creators of Rag Doll Kung Fu for the PC, might just be the most ambitious game ever attempted. There's no real plot or action, other than what the user creates, but you'll be able to create pretty much whatever you want, and then figure out how you want your avatar - a cute little doll made from surprisingly real-looking yarn - to play with it. You'll begin LittleBigPlanet with a pre-built area to explore, but once you figure out the sorts of things your character is capable of - namely summoning, placing and decorating random bits of scenery at will - you'll be able to tear it all down and remake it however you like, limited only by the laws of physics.
