Killzone 2

It's the moment of truth – can the PS3's prettiest shooter live up to its own hype?

Words: Mikel Reparaz, GamesRadar US

Then, there’s the business with Sev’s one-hit-kill knife that we reported earlier, which hasn’t been changed in the final version of the game. When you’re faced with a small squad of Helghast, no matter the difficulty level, it’s often easier to just run up and stab them all to death than it is to shoot it out with them. They usually don’t know how to deal with it and will almost always go down in one slash.

Above: This still applies, interestingly

Thankfully, none of that is a problem in multiplayer, in which 32 players can pick a team and fight over eight medium-sized maps. Each lengthy match cycles dynamically between up to five customizable game types:  Search and Destroy (base defense), Body Count (team deathmatch), Search and Retrieve (capture the flag), Assassination (one marked-for-death player must be defended or killed) and Capture and Hold (control points).

Cycling between these gives each match a sense of being an actual full-scale battle, instead of just an aimless skirmish. Moreover, the Call of Duty-like ranking system, which enables you to form squads and use job badges (medic, sniper, etc.) as you accumulate points, will go a long way toward helping you forget how much of a slog playing through five straight game types on the same map can be.

If you'd like to get some reward-free practice in before going online, there's also a skirmish mode that'll enable you to play with up to 15 bots, which are surprisingly smart even on the lowest skill setting.

Halo 3? That depends on what you’re comparing. If it’s the campaign, then absolutely yes; for all its flash and epic scope, Halo 3’s razor-thin plot and candy-colored weapons feel flimsy next to Killzone 2’s urban grit. On the other hand, its endlessly customizable – and endlessly fun – multiplayer modes ensure that Halo 3 hangs onto its 10 score when faced with Killzone 2’s more straightforward offerings.

Call of Duty: World at War? Yes, but it’s a tight race. Killzone 2 is prettier, its characters are more interesting and there’s very little trench-fighting, which is fine with us. Also, its flamethrower is substantially more useful than CoD:WaW’s.

Gears of War 2?
No. This one’s going to raise a lot of hackles, but Gears 2’s extreme brutality, imaginative level design, over-the-top weapons and wealth of (admittedly buggy) multiplayer options still manage to surpass Killzone 2. Killzone 2’s a purer FPS experience, but even rifle-butting legions of Helghast into submission can’t compare with the singular thrill of melting monsters with the Hammer of Dawn.

Resistance 2? Yes. Resistance 2 might be a little more colorful, and the weapons are definitely more imaginative, but the pieces don’t gel into an interesting whole quite as well as Killzone 2’s, and the Chimera just aren’t as compelling an enemy as the Helghast.

So there you go. Although it’s not everything we’d hoped for, Killzone 2 does live up to most of its hype, and it’s unquestionably the most important PS3 game of early 2009. Throw in some obligatory collectibles (intel briefcases and breakable Helghast symbols), a wealth of Trophies and a couple of ridiculously difficult boss fights, and Killzone 2’s compelling story and tightly paced action (maybe a little too tightly paced) make it a game that no PS3-owning shooter fan should be without.

Feb 2, 2009

You'll love
  • Beautiful (if bleak) visuals
  • Amazingly chaotic battles
  • Two words: lightning gun
You'll hate
  • Being limited to one rifle
  • Action's a little too predictable
  • Multiplayer matches can drag

Great review, I didn't really find gear 2 that amazing, but that's personal preference. February 27th can't come soon enough!

Heh. Something tells me Mikel is going to get swarmed with Fanboys over that Gears statement. Anyhow, In my eyes this was a very well written Article, if that, a tad nit picky, but isn't that what Critics are for, people?

A few things I don't understand though is I was listening to a Podcast about this game, and they said if you attempted this Knife ordeal, You, more or less, would get "**** Slapped by the Helghast". Another odd observation is the "predictability" of this. Now I'm no Biased Sony "Playslave", even though I only own that one System. (Disregard my Wii. I haven't played that in like 3 Years. ) But how many unpredictable FPS's are out there? Disregard the Open-world ones because half the times they don't even work. And finally, I can't say for sure, but Gears artistic design may be 'unique' and the such, but nothing really in that made me say "Wow." It was more of the whole combat thing. (Admittedly. )but isn't a little of Greek, Nazi, and Modern day architechture albeit, a little bit more interesting than the Cliched "Imaginative" stuff out there? Though I'll agree Gears is more brutal, since Killzone has always gone for that "realistic" approach, over Gears Brutal, Violent one.

Unfortunately, They're still fanboys out there that'll skim over this entire Article and call GR Biased "Xbots". Ah well. Still well written.

They should have played Butcher Pete song to the knife video.
Interesting that they did a game comparison, I dunno if i liked that part of the review, although it helped imagine how the game will play. And I do agree that it probably wont be as good as gears 2 because third person shooters are usually better on consoles. The PC is still best for fps, but thats not going to stop me buying this on release.

not a bad review but what do you mean the multiplayer can drag? i played the beta and it was awesome i didn't see anything wrong in the beta (apart from the RL which they fixed).

Uhm now I have mixed feelings (IN KNOW WAY GET ME WRONG THIS IS A MUST BUY FOR ME) because on the one hand the graphics are topped only buy Crysis (unfair comparison) and are only neared buy Gears2, also the multiplayer seems pretty solid following in the footsteps of CoD4 which is great four me, along with the never before seen FPS cover system, and the realistic weight of your character. On the other hand the team really missed out on some obviously cool features: Co-OP both splitscreen and online, Multiplayer Splitscreen(I'm not actually sure on this), blind fire from the awesome cover system(to easy to implement I mean really cmon now), better cursors (lol thats just me), an at least slightly wider variety of SciFi weapons and vehicles, and finally the implementation of the cover system in online mode("If you dont like it sont use but at least its there if you want it" would seem like a smarter response than ripping the system out).

All in all I near fully agree with this review and am now once again awaiting
THE NEXT BIGGEST PS3 GAME!!! out there likely released in 2010. Owell life goes on.

On a side note I would like to add that all though you guys may seem kind of biased toward the 360 at times I must admit that when I really look for the things you guys are talking about they do show up as small gripes aside from the graphics, the PS3s use of scale in brightness of different areas and objects has always attracted me more. And this is coming from a guy who has owned two PS3s after breaking one (I threw it down some stairs in rebellion of my dad... worst.. desicion/day.. EVER!!!) and is about to buy his third PSP, stupid screen cracks, so believe me when I say that Sony isn't doing ANYWHERE NEAR AS BAD AS THE 360 FANBOYS may think although our PS3 fanboys tend to talk a lot of shit too but hey there just being fans.

anyway nice article and GR keep up the good work!!!

wow this was long

I liked the cop show bit, and was wondering how it compares to the other big shooters, and hey, there's comparison at the end! Cool. I've never gotten into FPS, and this won't get me started, but good review Mikel.
mrmitts123  - 9 months 28 days ago
I commend you guys for at least staying true to your word of not "hating" Killzone 2. But Gears 2's MP is broken so maybe you should scratch that.
RonnyLive19881  - 9 months 28 days ago
Good review! I really didn't see this game topping Gears 2 anyway. As long as it is a good FPS I'll be happy. I do hate how PS3 bots seem to act like this game is Obama's second coming. I think they need to get over both of them...
K206  - 9 months 28 days ago
I'm glad you guys gave a pretty fair review.

The one thing that bothers me is, gears 2 is probably one of the worst online experiences I've ever had. In fact the game itself is so boring and predictable, I think Halo 3 is way better than gears 2 is.
AmazingKG3  - 9 months 28 days ago
ya Mikel, come podcast 37, I would bet money that youll tell us how people are gonna want to cut you for that score and comments. I think that is an extremely fair score, and a solid review (Halo comment agreed), cant wait to get my hands on that demo in 3 days.

With all the complaints I've heard on various boards about Gears of War 2's multiplayer problems, it's pretty surprising to read Gamesradar saying it's better. Considering I haven't really heard anywhere near as many complaints about Killzone 2's mp, even from the beta. Also, Gears 2's level design isn't as varied as they'd like us to believe. Almost half of it takes place in a dark and dingy cave. But everyone has their own opinions right.
GamesRadarMikelReparaz  - 9 months 28 days ago
@klempfner: If you're playing through all five game types (which by default last about five minutes each) in a single match, it adds up to a long time spent retreading the same ground in a single level. That's adjustable, of course (so long as you're hosting the game), and it's still fun, but after a while my short attention span desperately wanted a change of scenery. Especially in skirmish mode. Bots are poor company.
RandyChimp  - 9 months 28 days ago
only gamesradar could knock off points because multiplayer matches drag on. Sigh! Other than that, and the fact that this site is obviously blowing Microsoft on a regular basis, good review.
GoldenMe  - 9 months 28 days ago
I lawled at the CIS reference.

Although the game just still seems generic to me.

Great review anyways. Hope PS3 fanboys won't storm your building and try to burn you all at the stake.
