Killzone 2

Killzone 2 – hands-on

The greyest game ever finally shows its colors

All too quickly our armor was blown off and the little guy sitting in the tank turret bit the dust. Spying another scripted event, we jumped onto the tank, taking control of the armoured beast. As you would expect, controls follow the Battlefield template, the left stick moves the tank, the right stick controls the camera, and R1 and R2 fire missiles and machine-guns respectively. The arcing tracer fire from the machine-gun looks incredibly realistic and like the guns in general, feels accurate when strafing; groups of Helghast in overhead gantry positions flailed satisfyingly as we sprayed hot orange bullets in their direction.

As an enemy tank drew up onto the battlefield, surrounded by even more Helghast troops, sparks flew as shells and bullets landed on masonry and steel, and we woke up to Killzone 2’s pull. This isn’t an original game; it’s CoD4 with Space Marines, but no other game has the ability to grab you by the throat and shake you so much. The experience equates to that first time you stormed the beach at the beginning of Medal of Honor: Frontline, or that moment following a battle in Bad Company as you glance back at your handy work to see smoke, fire and hole-filled buildings. You did that. You are a war machine.

Visible in the distance, Helghast reinforcements begin arriving in large numbers. In our immediate vicinity, our squad was going to work on the current Helghast ranks – the AI looking like it can take care of itself – and somewhere in the middle of all the smoke the Helghast tank was still going strong. Atmosphere seems to be Killzone 2’s biggest success. It has it in abundance. The game’s controls, missions and pacing all feel very familiar, but it’s all done with such panache that you can’t help get sucked into developer Guerrilla’s compelling vision of future war.

There are question marks over the level of scripted events. Guerrilla are masters of setting up the blockbuster set-piece battle, but is that enough? Can Killzone 2 better CoD4 online? The Badge system that enables you to customise character set-ups, creating hybrids of familiar classes such as Scouts, Engineers, Medics, etc. could prove revolutionary. And then there’s the four-player co-op campaign to look forward to. Now that really could be something special.

I'm so excited for this game, looks and sounds amazing.

One thing about it being similar to CoD4, I saw a writer posted "CoD4 was basically perfect, so if it ain't broken, don't fix it" which I think is pretty true. That's wy I really like how it's simliar but adds some extra elements and builds on it instead of trying to create something hugely new that might not ever be as good.

This just proves games don't need those vibrant colors to make them better. Of course, in some cases, it does. This case, personally, it doesn't. If they've compared it to CoD4 like they did here. It's shaping up to be quite the game

Finally something positive about Killzone 2. It did look amazing and it caught my attention ever since that first video flooded into my eyes, but hearing negative things about it ever since then made me start to think twice. Now I'm thinking three times, should I buy it when it comes out? Killzone 1 wasn't mind blowing or the "halo killer" as everyone was saying but dammit I had a good time shooting things! Guess We'll just wait for the actual review when it ships.

First off, lawl at anything being billed as a 'Halo killer'. It's like saying anything is going to beat World of Warcraft; even if a better game is made, it was there first.

Second:
First person cover? That sounds terrible. How could that work?
Synster  - 1 year 2 months ago
Halo, honestly doesn't live up the the hype it deserved. Halo 3 anyone? That game. Eh. It was a solid FPS, but I expected more out of the hype it received. And. FP Cover you ask? Have you not seen any of the videos where it shows it in gameplay. Only a moron couldn't figure out how to use it.

Screw colours, its a godamn war game! Looks like a breakthrough FPS, but i hope it isn't being overhyped like halo 3.

@Akara. I think you should lay off the meds, its making you hyperactive!

doesn't sound that great. kinda generic actually. if its COD4 with space marines, then great, but not worth all this hype. Iam still not sold.
Synster  - 1 year 2 months ago
Generic? Are you kidding me? Since when has First person cover ever been used in any Solid FPS games? How many games have had Vehicles implemented into their campaigns? And what hype? There honestly isn't that much hype.

@Delta: 'Zactly. Though about your second point. If it comes out Febuary, I doubt they're going to start the level-of-magnitude-hype Halo 3 had.
TheSuburbiaRuins  - 1 year 2 months ago
Ya cover hasnt been used because it makes no sense and doesnt work, if it were fps cover you wouldnt be able to see what you are looking at, thats why over the shoulder cover works, in real life you cant see through cover...and games are an expansion of life...so do you really want to not be able to see through cover again? And umm vehicles are in most games now a days.

It's not a console killer, or a Halo one at that, and I dont even like Halo. It's just gonna be another game for ps3 that people try to use to show that their console is superior..but it will die out soon. Just like MGS4, u never hear about it anymore outside of PS3 owners.

Are you a complete ditz? If your leaned up against a brick wall. Tell me when you can see through brick. I'll be bought if you can tell me when you can see right through a solid object. You run around with a gun, and suddenly you can see yourself walking in real life? Hah. Your funny, Y'know that? And. I didn't say what games vehicles are in. I said what games vehicles have that are used /Well/. Read before trying to come back at that.
Synster  - 1 year 2 months ago
Wait. My bad. Still. nonetheless. Have you not seen the gameplay vids? You can see over the cover perfectly fine. Unless you have absolutely horrible eyesight. Which I doubt.
