Sony's free virtual world Home is "only now starting to realise its potential", Buzz! developer Relentless Software reckons.

According to executive director Andrew Eades, Sony's much-maligned PS3 space "will only get more interesting" as more developers support it.

Sony has moved to reassure fans of PlayStation Home on PS3 that the virtual world remains a "top priority" for the platform holder, despite reports of the contrary.

According to an Edge report, Sony's director of PlayStation Home, Pete Edwards, speaking at the London Games Conference, said: "It's been a long road. We've proved there is a market out there and we've got a lot of people that spend a lot of time in [Home]. It's not a priority right now but there is a business model there."

Sony is now reporting that Edwards was misquoted and misrepresented.
It's certainly no coincidence that the living dead are coming out of the woodwork just in time for Halloween (it is their version of Thanksgiving, after all – complete with morsels of mortals upon which to ravenously feast). We here on the PlayStation Home Community Management team want to roll out the proverbial red carpet for our reanimated brethren and throw the biggest (brainiest?) bash of the year, but we'll need your help in overcoming a few obstacles along the way.
Online Survey Hints at Xbox 360 version of Home - with Avatars (News)

A survey has been sent to Xbox 360 owners that provides some interesting insights to Microsoft's ventures into the casual gaming space.

The first part of the survey is the most standard, asking people about their favorite game shows and board games, including Balderdash and Taboo, as well as what they like best about 1 Vs. 100. One interesting aspect of that section is that there may be a paid version of 1 Vs. 100 that will offer better prizes.

The latter part of the survey, however, is extremely intriguing, and an indication that Microsoft may be venturing into a PlayStation Home-like space in which Avatars can congregate and play retro games on classic coin-op cabinets. They queried applicants what name would fit the space best – "Game Room", "RetroCade", "AvatArcade", "RetroGame", "Classics LIVE", and so forth.

TSA:

Some clever chaps on the Official EU PlayStation Forum noticed a short addition in a post elsewhere on the internet. That post originates from Eidos' official forum, titled 'The Official Batman: Arkham Asylum FAQ'. The stickied post contains amalgamated information from loads of sources to define as much about the upcoming game as possible, ranging from the pre-order details to the different exclusives for each platform.

Under the PlayStation 3 exclusives, there's a few points that we already know, including the Joker DLC. Under this, however, we learn that the 'Batcave Outpost' will be coming as an apartment for PlayStation Home for free. We've seen free costumes and other items given away for free before in Home as promotional stunts for released movies such as Star Trek and Transformers 2. It's very likely that the same is now being done for the release of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Whether or not this content will remain available for a limited time or not is still up for debate.

Speaking at the Develop conference in the U.K., director of PlayStation Home Pete Edwards said that the users of Sony's virtual world are overwhelmingly young and male.

"Only 80 percent of users fall into the 18- to 35-year-old male demographic," he said, noting that said demographic typically makes up 90 percent of the console audience. According to Gamasutra, Edwards said that since Home's open beta launched in December, between 25 and 35 percent of online PlayStation 3 users have used the service "at least once."

Edwards declined to quantify the number of active users, claiming that the figure is difficult to measure, but said that Home is "slowly broadening the appeal of the console demographic."

For several days, the Fight Night Space in the EA Sports Complex is online and on various forums users reported that their PlayStation 3 crashes when they visiting the Space. In the Space is a DJ mini-game present where the problems begin. If you are in the neighborhood of the mini-game, your PlayStation 3 will stuck, and you have to reset your PlayStation 3 and log into Home again. Hopefully EA Sports will fix this, so that everyone can play the mini-game and get a lot of T-shirts for their Home avatar.

PlayStation Home is making money just seven months into its open beta. Pete Edward, director of the PlayStation 3's avatar-based social gaming service, revealed the most recent statistics for the service in a presentation titled "Home: First Term Report" delivered at the Develop Conference in Brighton, UK.

Of the 7 million global users who have used the service since the open beta's launch, 3 million were based in Europe. The average game session length of European Home users stands at 56 minutes and these users have to date downloaded 6 million free and paid for virtual items of merchandise with which to dress their avatars and virtual apartments.

"This is a commercial business," Edward said. "It's up and running, making money and can add significant value to your game IP." In the first month, he said, microtransactions generated $1 million.

Edward, who is European director for the service, was speaking at the Develop conference in Brighton. He said the figure includes three million people in Europe alone.

However, the estimated figure for those returning to the online space more than once stands at around 25-30 per cent of these numbers, according to Edward, although he pointed out the stats "aren't definitive" and are constantly changing.

PSN game sharing is also labeled as violating the ToS later in the PS Forum thread.

"Within the first seven months, Home has seen seven million users visit the various spaces on offer. Three million of these users are from Europe.

Whilst some of the items downloaded are free, it is clear that Home is doing well as a business. In total, over six million items of free and paid merchandise have been downloaded, which in anyone's language is a great deal of content."

TheSixthAxis:

We saw it back at 2007's E3; the ability to take a photo within PlayStation Home, automatically saved to the HDD, and placed in a picture frame for your apartment. Then again, Phil Harrison showed us a lot of exciting options within Home, which only some have been developed and released over the course of two years.

Locust_Star, Home Manager in America recently replied to a request about screen capturing within Home: "[It's] a simple feature that I know the devs are working on. My magic 8-ball says [it's] coming sooner rather than later."

So could we expect this as early as this coming Thursday? Visible Home updates seem to occur fortnightly now, so the chances of this becoming a reality are increased somewhat as last week was just another maintenance update.
Remember the old promise of the trophy room and feature length films? Well, the survey has it.

Peter Edward, director of Sony's PlayStation Home platform group, has told SPOnG that motion controller support for Home is likely, though not set in stone just yet.

When asked whether people will see a use for the wand popping up in Home, Edward said at the GameHorizon conference in Gateshead that "I'm sure that at some point in the future, it's something that will happen".

Home declared a "long term" prospect as Sony reveals download figures.

PlayStation Home stands to become "an essential component for all PS3 games", according to the service's director.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Peter Edward predicted the online virtual world would become integral to future PS3 titles as the company continues to develop the service, Gamasutra reports.

"Home is the starting point for PlayStation 3 online, and that's something that gamers are going to expect as more games support Game Launch from within Home," he said. "This will become an essential component for all PS3 games."
