PS3 'technical issues' hampered Haze development (News)

Free Radical's Karl Hilton has acknowledged that the PS3 gave the developer a number of 'stumbling blocks' when creating Haze.

Speaking to Develop, Crytek UK managing director Karl Hilton admitted that Haze "had a lot of development issues which meant it wasn't the game it should have been."

"A lot of them were technical issues," he said. "The PS3 is a powerful machine but a difficult one to get the best out of."

Arstechnica: There were many problems with Haze: even after numerous delays, there were still issues with low-end resolution, gameplay was painfully generic at best, vehicles controlled like bricks, and the storytelling elements were laughably bad. Honestly, it seems like the biggest mistake Free Radical made was actually putting this game into production, as it's been theorized that its critical lambasting and lack of sales played some role in the developer's demise. It turns out that nobody really wants anything to do with the game, including retailers.

While meandering through the aisles at my local Target today, I stopped by the video game section to see if there were any post-Holiday sale prices to capitalize on. I was a little surprised to see the above clearance tag sitting in front of Haze, which has now been reduced to $20.98. When I asked one of the store's salespeople about it, he shrugged and informed me that the game sold well since its launch, so he suspected the store was trying to simply get rid of the remaining copies they'd had on hand for the past few months.

An update is now available on the PSN to correct the difficulties encountered when inviting people into the Co-op campaign. All you have to do is turn on your PS3, launch the game, and accept the update.
After the auto-install, please go into "Select chapters" to continue your campaign. You will then start from the beginning of the last level you reached in the game.

Despite the unenthusiastic and often mediocre reviews and scores given to Haze, according to Develop, the game developers news site, Haze has come in as a new entry at number 12,just under Rock Band, the highest climber. It even beat the mighty Age of Conan which has come in as a new entry at number 13.

Now that's not bad for a game with overall below average mixed reviews. Perhaps this is another indicator of reviewers being out of touch with what gamers in the real world get their kicks from.

After picking up my copy of HAZE which is actually a solid shooter, and will tide any Ps3 owner over until Resistance 2 hits in November despite what our friends at IGN seem to believe.

Anyway i've just noticed on the back of the case it states here will be some free downloadable content coming in the future, most likey will be maps and maybe weapons for the multiplayer modes, but it is refreshing to see a developer not charging over the top prices for a few extra maps (call of Duty 4 and Gears of War suffered badly from this).

With early reviews for Haze looking good (Famitsu 34/40 and Italian PSM 9/10), it came as a bit of a shock when IGN bestowed a dreaded 4.5/10 on the game in their review this morning. In curiosity, PSU.com contacted Rob Yescombe of Free Radical to hear what he had to say.

"My thoughts are "Owch". No, wait - MEGAowch," wrote Yescombe. "Haze has had mixed reviews, but even GoldenEye got a 4/10 when it first came out. With a 9/10 in the Italian PSM, and an extremely positive review in Famitsu, we're looking forward to people playing Haze and making a judgment for themselves."

According to IGN, Haze suffered from "a bland story with weak characters... [and] tons of visual issues, from texture tears and non-descript environments to pop-in and odd animation problems."

This comes as a surprise to us because back in March, PSU was given hands on with a near final build of the game and we thought the title looked fairly good. The graphics in particular looked crisp and the framerate was smooth.

Free Radical's creative lead, Derek Littlewood has shunned internet hissy-fits over the revelation that Haze on PS3 doesn't run in native 720p.

Haze is the latest of a number of games to run in a lower resolution than the HD standard 720p, for the benefit of a smoother frame rate.

Since last week, I hope you enjoyed the demo and that you did not make any abusive use of Nectar. From what we saw, it seems that you enjoyed playing this demo. Yet, we noticed that some of you found the demo too easy, for those ones the suggestion is to try the Hard mode. (You may also be glad to know that an Ultra Hard mode is unlockable in the final version of the game!) From some other comments I read, I wanted to clarify that the game runs at 720p resolution.

UK retailer HMV is offering an interesting deal for Free Radicals' PlayStation 3 exclusive HAZE. If you're anticipating this game and you have a group of mates doing the same then this might interest you...

They are offering a 4 for 3 deal, that's right, 4 copies of HAZE for the price of 3. This is really pushing the games co-operative functionality. HAZE of course features a full 4 player co-operative campaign. However what the store fails to mention is that you don't need four mates with four copies of the game, you can play the full co-op campaign split screen.

Haze's release date has officially been locked down and is not set to change again. Ever. CVG is reporting that it has confirmed with Ubisoft that May 23rd is the date that the game will be available in Europe. Haze has been in release limbo for several months now, after it failed to make its November 2007 release date and was pushed to early 2008. Then, in late January, it was pushed back even further with a vague "fiscal 2008/2009" date attached.

Now, however, we can be certain that we'll be getting our hands on the Nectar infused shooter on May 23rd in Europe. Though there's currently no word on a US release date. It may not have impressed us much at the Play.com Live event, but we're still intrigued. If only to get closure on what has been one of the most confusing releases we've ever known.

Haze, which sees you control a soldier powered by an enhancing drug called Nectar, was originally announced as an Xbox 360, PS3 and PC game, but was subsequently made PS3 exclusive soon after.

Littlewood explained the decision: "At Free Radical we've always had a good history with PlayStation hardware. If you look all the way back to the European launch of the PS2, we had TimeSplitters coming out as a PS2 exclusive then. Ever since then we've always worked well with PlayStation hardware. And so when it came to Haze it was an obvious decision to make. Our coders were enjoying working with the PS3 and it seemed a good decision. As a developer it's always nice to be able to focus on making one thing great rather than spreading your efforts. So we were pleased to have the opportunity to focus purely on PS3."

Following the announcement yesterday that Ubisoft's PS3 FPS Haze is scheduled for a UK release on May 22nd, the publisher has this morning released a revised release schedule that seemingly back tracks on yesterday's news.

The release date has reverted back to simply 'May', and whist that means a 22ns release might be possible, Ubisoft is no longer committing to it, instead stating that it expects "confirmation of the release date soon".

Last week MTV Multiplayer read about an incredible offer for Ubisoft's upcoming PS3-exclusive first-person shooter Haze. According to a flyer, the Canadian branch of EB Games (GameStop) was offering gamers what amounted to a one-week rental.

The flyer reads: "PLAY HAZE FOR A WEEK: Pre-purchase Haze and get full in-store credit back when you trade Haze in within one week of pick-up!"

Was it real? Yes. Is it still being offered? A Ubisoft representative told MTV Multiplayer yesterday: no.

Ubisoft and Free Radical have released a handful of new Haze shots, in the run-up to the game's re-re-confirmed release on Playstation 3 in May.

CVG has responded to these new images quote, "We'd love to say it's looking better - and we would, except it looks like someone's gone to town on these new shots with a copy of Photoshop."

We will have to wait for an official statement from Free Radical an see how they respond to these allegations before we pass judgement.

Gamestop's in the US and Canada have been sending out flyers to inform those interested in Haze that they can basically get the game free upon release. There is a catch though, as they will have to bring the game back after a week. The flyer (which you can see at the link) states that those that put down their money for the game early will be given the offer to return the game after a weeks play for a full refund in store credit.

Confusion over Haze's exclusivity to the PlayStation 3 arose today following an announcement by Ubisoft that the game had been delayed and would not make its first quarter 2008 release.

Haze has been heavily rumoured to be heading to Xbox 360 in addition to PlayStation 3, and the lack of platform clarification in its latest press release caused the rumour mill to churn once again.

Publisher Ubisoft has once again pushed back the release date of Free Radical's drug-enhanced shooter Haze. The company now expects the title to arrive at some point during its 2008 fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009.

Soooo, Haze is delayed. But you already know that, don't you. Well, the simple fact of the matter is, any delay on a game is a good thing - it's more time to optimize and polish and tweak and generally improve the whole damn thing to the Nth degree. Now, I know that some of you patient folks out there will be bitterly disappointed. Some of you may even want to come to my house and smash a colostomy bag over my head, and I think most people would understand that sentiment, but believe when I say that the delay is the best possible thing for the game. Hell, the reason why you guys are so pumped about it is because you have high expectations, and we need just a little more time to make sure that we meet them. So in conclusion, rest easy - we're still slugging away on this badboy.

In other news, this week has seen several drafts and redrafts of the TimeSplitters 4 story outline being pulled around to see what sticks. As of today we might - MIGHT - have settled on something. Time will tell.

For the record, this blog is dedicated to the guys on the forums that noticed that I hadn't written one for a while. I didn't think anyone was reading this little thing.

January 07, 2008 - Ubisoft Montreal's Audrey-Ann Milot told Ars Technica in an email that the company had "decided to postpone the release" to "put the final touches to the game," and that the game is still slated to be released in "January-February 2008."

Update: Ars Technica was contacted by Ubisoft again last night to correct what was previously said: the new release window is indeed January-March 2008 (or Q4), and thus the game could very well end up arriving in March.
