The latest update from the underground Sony PlayStation 3 scene puts a mysteriously unreleased PS3 firmware into the spotlight. Firmware version 2.16, just one minor spot shy from the latest version of Sony's next generation console software, was allegedly found to exist in PAL versions of Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

This development came after the fact that many have pondered over the significance of firmware 2.17. It was said that 2.17 came with complementary network code for GT 5 Prologue, though tangible evidence wasn't provided at the time.

SONY has now officially confirmed that the preorders for GT5 prologue has indeed hit 1 million in europe alone. This is what PS3Fanboy is reporting after the surfacing of various reports today claiming that the million preorders were for both europe and north america combined :-

It's not every day games go "platinum" before they're even released. Generally, this occurs with huge titles, but even taking that into account it's an uncommon feat. Factor into that the notion that a game whose title explicitly states it's a Prologue to a full game ... and it's nearly unbelievable. But in Europe alone, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has achieved just that: one million pre-orders.

What we need to remember is that the pre-order number is not only for Europe alone, but also just for the Blu-ray release of the game -- not the downloadable version. If half of the people who intend to purchase the game pre-order it and the other half download it, well, this is going to be huge. Add America and Japan into the mix and we've basically got the best-selling PS3 title to date; at least, that's what we're assuming will happen. What about you?

PS3Fanboy reports that Takau Imasaki, producer for Gran Turismo 5 at SCEA, recently talked a bit about the game and what's going on in the minds of Sony. The game is meant to be more user-friendly for the Western audience. Prologue is meant more to serve as a testing ground for the developers on creating the best online functionality possible, built through user-feedback and the experience of releasing one "game" before the full title. They're trying to catch up to Microsoft in that regard, they said. Car damage? It's coming, they said, but probably not in this first batch of games, we would imagine. Also, there won't be that much downloadable content, but perhaps a little.

In an email sent to customers, GAME, a leading retailer of video games, has confirmed Gran Turismo 5 won't be released this year, with European PlayStation 3 gamers having to wait until 2009.

The email does, however, promote the March 28 release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which will be priced only £19.99. This early teaser will feature five tracks and 40 cars, plus 16-player online racing.
