Unlike the terrible Prizefighter, all people who have made significant contributions to Facebreaker are actually getting paid and are credited.
2) Resistance 2 trailer next month (you are probably reading this in February, so later this month), as well seeing the game (which looks amazing) in action in non-trailer form.

In between bouts of comforting our Chicago correspondent Mark Wilson over the loss of EA's Chicago studios, we've been pondering the fate of the franchise that said studio brought to life over the years. Now an inside source has spoken with a member of our staff who is SUPPOSED TO BE ON VACATION, letting him know that the Fight Night franchise at least will find a new home with EA Vancouver. Nothing yet on the fate of the Marvel fighting game or the Def Jam franchise, but perhaps they'll be taking the journey north along with their pugilistic cousin. More on the continuing saga as it unfolds.

Electronic Arts to buy stake in The9 (News)

Electronic Arts Inc. has reached an agreement with The9 Ltd. to buy a 19 percent stake in the Chinese online game operator for about $200 million, a local newspaper said on Saturday.

EA, the world's top video game publisher, and The9 have reached a basic agreement, Shanghai Securities News reported.

A representative from The9 was not immediately available for comment.

Shanghai-based The9 also obtained the exclusive right to run EA's casual game FIFA Online in China at the end of March, the newspaper added.

Free PlayStation 3 magazine launches (News)

Gamerzines, the site behind the free magazines for Xbox 360, PC games, PSP and DS, has launched its free PlayStation 3 magazine to co-incide with the UK launch of the console. As with other Gamerzines, the magazine is written by professional games journalists and offered for free in a digital format. All that is required is Adobe Reader 8 on a PC. The magazine is enhanced with videos and multimedia that play on the pages themselves.

Issue 1 is available for download immediately and covers every single European launch game, as well as lengthy preview feature highlighting their pick of the top 20 games still to come on the PS3 this year.

The magazine is to publish a new issue for free every month from launch, to match the other existing Gamerzines for other platforms.

Recently Glenn Entis, Vice President and Chief Visual Officer at Electronic Arts discussed his feelings about the PlayStation 3 console.

When asked, how do the PS3 and Xbox 360 match up? Glenn responded:

"The whole industry knows it's been a challenge; the PS3's a very complex piece of equipment. On one hand it's a challenge, on the other hand there's tremendous potential in that box. I think it's going to take developers a little while to figure out how to unlock that power.

We've got games coming out now where we feel we've hit maybe 20 per cent of the potential of PlayStation 3. We know the power's there, but like any new platform it's going to take us a little bit of time to unleash it.

Was it more complex than we were expecting? Yes, probably; there were some challenges that we didn't expect. We've got tremendous confidence long-term that it's going to be a phenomenal games machine."

So to find that EA has only tapped into 20% of the PS3's power, you look at games like Fight Night Round 3 with amazing graphics and realistic facial animations, it makes you wonder what the PS3 will have in store for us in the future. Like Glenn said,"...We know the power's there, but like any new platform it's going to take us a little bit of time to unleash it."

If you'll recall, Microsoft had high hopes that Sony's first-generation games would look cruddy. Sony had given so little time to developers to work with the development kits that, the theory went, developers would not have enough time to make games. One developer I spoke with said that developing for the PS 3 is harder than for the Xbox 360. He said that everything came in late and many companies had harsh deadlines. Electronic Arts had nine months to do Fight Night Round 3 for the PS 3. The companies that are repurposing Xbox 360 games are having an easier time getting done for launch.

But the evidence we saw this week shows that the PS 3 games are looking good, even for first-generation games. Julian Eggebrecht, head of former Nintendo developer Factor 5, says that Sony really came through with the development kits. Kaz Hirai noted there are 10,000 dev kits seeded among developers now. By and large, the games I saw looked BETTER than Xbox 360 games. Not all were great. Not all were demonstrably better. Not all are worth the price difference of the consoles. But the developers seem to be doing well. Now we'll see how many of these 21 titles in the "launch window" actually show up for launch.

Electronic Arts today announced more than 30 games in development for the PLAYSTATION 3. When the system launches in November, EA will deliver some of the world's most popular game franchises including Madden NFL 07, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 07 and Need for Speed Carbon. EA will release eight to ten games on the PLAYSTATION 3 by late March including EA SPORTS Fight Night Round 3 and Def Jam: ICON.
