FIFA 09

Also known as: FIFA Soccer 09 [US]

The Spain of footy games: finally coming good on the pitch...

Not only are the centres better but so is the shooting. Our games have been filled with goals, with our chosen teams proving to be a tad leaky. And that's largely down to the new shooting mechanic. The scourge of any footy game is discovering that certain shots always go in. The last FIFA had areas where it wasn't ever worth shooting from as you'd never score from there. Now you can ping shots into the goal from anywhere. We've seen far more long shots fly in as well as all manner of volleys and lobs. You'll really notice players sidefooting the ball home or curling it around the keeper with the outside of the foot.

And married up to that, like an England International and an orange-skinned WAG, is the way keepers react to shots and crosses. They now parry and punch crosses and shots a lot more, as happens in real matches. And more rebounds equals more goals.

The set-pieces have been reworked too. There's a lot more variety to corners and your keeper won't claim everything that arrives in the six-yard box, while you can also use two men on free kicks just like in PES. The way that players nudge each other out of the way is just like watching proper footballers jostle. When your striker manages to wriggle free and get in front of his marker to plant a header into the far corner, it feels extremely satisfying.

However, possibly the most improved aspect of the game is the player collisions. When you launch into a sliding tackle you'll send the other player flying, while shoulder-to-shoulder challenges will see you bumped off the ball. The way that the players are knocked around has a real impact on how cleanly they connect with the ball, meaning that finally you can play long ball football that would have Sam Allardyce weeping tears of joy. You might get annoyed as lightweight players often hit the deck, but hey, that's football and they'll make up for it with their close control and nippy-ness.

So are we talking title challenger or midtable obscurity for this FIFA? This is the next-gen footy game that we should have seen last year. Rather than a drab early season 1-1 draw, this is a 4-3 thriller with end-to-end footy and two goal-of-the-season contenders. The bad points? Well, the referees are still a little quick to whistle and the advantage rule isn't always implemented. (Where are the quick free-kicks, EA?) We also noticed a tiny bit of slowdown in multiplayer games - especially on long goal kicks where lots of players collided. But it certainly didn't spoil our games.

Despite these niggles, EA have delivered a beautiful take on the beautiful game. The players look and play better than ever - this is the finest footy videogame yet in terms of realism. Disappointed because your favourite team is already out of the cup and displaying worrying relegation form? Pick yourself up with a copy of FIFA 09 and rewrite the season. It's a guaranteed 3-points winner.

You'll love
  • Players express desires with gestures
  • Improved shooting
  • Keepers don't always catch the ball
You'll hate
  • Ref not playing advantage
  • No quick free kicks
  • Slowdown on goal-kicks in multi

Really don't get why people are raving about fifa this year, it's sooooo boring!!! Yes, it looks good, yes it sounds good, put it plays like the players are underwater and trying to turn a defender inside out is next to impossible! (even with Ronaldo, Messi, etc.)

I have to say I find incredible that this game got a 9. I would have given it a 5. Pathetic AI, the players handle like oil tankers, the passing doesn't always seem to correlate with the direction pressed and the player change is a joke. How it is claimed that this game is realistic is beyond and makes me think the review has the footballing knowledge of a watermelon. Players reactions are so bad it is beyond belief, if they are out of position they ignore the ball, they commonly just watch it. The same awful spongy player control is still there and when they can actually control a ball they take an age to do anything with it.
PES last year was a let down, but in terms of football and playability it is so far ahead of this it is unreal.
BAP might keep people interested, though the one player is ridiculously easy even on world class, but it is not enough to save one from massive disappointment after all the hype surrounding this game

FIFA 09 is a heavy Upgrade from Fifa 08. Smooth Gameplay, more define graphics and sound, more tactics. More Control, camera angles, 20 Player Online Games..... Its way FIFA on PS3 should of been the first place...Thats problarly why people feel short changed, but does deserve a 9. And I will get PES as well, they both great games....

Fifa is way better than PES. I played the demo of PES and it was terrible, the game reacted really slowly when you pressed a button and it didn't look half as good as Fifa. Congratulations, EA for making a fine game, but where's the different weather conditions from FIFA 07?

I agree with absolutely everything you guys say except for one ugly little but(t)... The crossing system is bloody godawful! And i've even got help on because i frankly cant cross for beans. Other than that i hate the way the not-quite-so-cream-of-the-crop players are discriminated, especially in Live Season (why oh why did i spend my money on that?!) To take my favorite example, 1899 Hoffenheim (1899% Spitzenklasse, hell yeah!) are at the top of the table and Vedad Ibisevic, all hail his Goofy-ish visage, is league top scorer, while Bayern Munich at current cant even keep Borrussia Mönchengladbach from reducing a 2-0 deficit to a tie. And yet still, Vedad Ibisevic is rated at a puny 77, and Frank Ribery (kudos to that wonderful little frog) and Luca Toni and the rest of the horrid southlanders are rated in the top of the 80's! Reality check, EA!

In the review above, i think they have mostly only pointed out the good point's of this game. To start of with....No doubt Fifa 09 is much better than any other football game made by EA so far which is great. The game overall game as very good but what im about to point out is like my own little reveiw of Fifa 09.

Rating given by me:8/10

Why?:8 is a very good rating for this game in my eye's. It actually deserves a 9 but with the thing's im about point out has made me give it an 8.

Down point's:

1. Though Fifa 09 is unique and different to other football games, it's missing thing's that the other football games have. Eg. The weather. You can play a million matches on season mode and you will have the same weather....Over and over again! That need's to be fixed straight away. It's almost lazy that EA haven't already put different forcast's in to different matches. And if your going to add something, make it worthy say one half it is late in the afternoon with lot's of cloud's. At the end of the match, it should be night-change in forcast.

2. Commentary. The commentary in Fifa 09 is almost exact to the commentary in Fifa 08 and not only is the commentary the same, it's very limited where you find yourself listening to the exact same word's from the match before. Andy Gray can be so harsh that you'd think he's on Mars with the commentary. To make this quick...I'd refuse to play the next Fifa if it has the same commentary yet again. We need new commentary that you can believe it's coming from somebody who's watching the match. Make there be more of a variety of commentary aswel, waste of time if there's just going to be a very limited amount of different commentary. A new commentator for a new match would suite the game very nicely but that's pushing it a little.

3. Endurance, Consistency, Fun Factor.
For a great game you need to feel inside it like your actually playing it. Not just you sitting down pushing down a few button's on your pad to make the little men on the screen do all the hard work. Fifa as it is is fine...for now atleast. It wont be long till everybody wants more from Fifa and starts complaining there all the same as each other and they get more boring as soon as another one is released. I myself play this game a lot but only because i try to look out for way'sto improve and partly because (hate to admit it but) Fifa 09 is very addicting until your pulling your hair out through frustration of winning every game of the season then get thrashed by the team that are about to get relegated. It's them little thing's in Fifa 09 that let's it down. This game would be a lot more consistent if the thing's i have said already were put in. It is impossible to never stop enjoying watching a pixelated man in a pixelated shirt kick a ball but if we were all satisfied out of that for a little longer, it'd be a big improvement to Fifa 09.

5. Player behaviour.
Player's behaviour and reaction's have improved a lot since Fifa 08 which is good. Now what is needed is more different individual plus group behaviour. The ability to actually argue the ref out of a yellow card to the player himself or a team mate would be another widely improvement. All these idea's build up to make the most realistic football game the world has experienced.

5. On the pitch?Nope!Off it!
One thing that makes Fifa 09 superior to PES is how it's layed out off the pitch. Look at the difference between the two games and it's easy to see that Fifa wins. I am happy myself with how EA have layed out the menu for Fifa 09. My point in this is that new things now are needed. Being able to give a player a certain number has been taken away for some reason. I don't laugh at seeing my new striker #1 and having my Goalkeeper #99 or whatever stupid number they may have. Buying a player has become an ease if you have the required amount of money. It need's a new setup or way on how to buy a player. It can be fun to see your player's overall go up when you upgrade his stat's with the xp he earn's. Some new worthy stat's would be nice to see.

6. Other.
Unlike PES, Fifa 09 is licenced so you can have the right kit's and stadium's which is a breath of fresh air to my lung's. The ability to maybe make your own team with it's unique own emblem and kit would be a huge step but would be hard with all the licencing and stuff, but it's an idea. A couple more league's eg. the Russian, Ukraine league would make the Champion's league on Fifa better. I was outraged about not being able to sign Arshavin for Arsenal because Zenit aren't on the game. More International team's would be better. Stadium's. More please!Seeing a team like West Brom playing at a stadium that's Spanish is a disgrace so more real stadium's is a must. If my idea of making your club happen's....It would be cool to be able to make your own stadium. The crowd need's a certain upgrade since they look as if they were made of cardboard. A few more chant's would be more....

Continuing on.....

.....realistic.

With all of that covered, you'd get a very good game but there just a few i have spotted out. I am aware and sure there are many more way's to make Fifa 09 better. My ambition is to create the best game possible with not having to have complaint's about this and that but it is a big ask as nothing's perfect =P. I'd like to be a game designer as a job so i hope this help's. Don't be offended by any of the language used in the review of mine EA. Fifa 09 is a great wide success and i hope the next Fifa is even better with some of these idea's added in. Don't let this reveiw put you off on buying this game since it's the best Fifa installment yet. This game must be bought if your looking for your money's worth of gameplay. No i haven't mentioned one single bit about Online game play since it's not my favourite part of Fifa 09. I have played online but wasn't too fussed about it. I haven't got the internet on my PS3 anymore so I don't know much about it.

Well hope you agree and like my idea's. Feel free to reply about this post. Cya
