Oh PS3, you really must work on this tardiness. Youre a strong student with a lot of brains, and you can produce good work when you put your mind to it, but with this persistent lateness youre not only letting us down, but youre letting yourself down too. We know youve only just joined us and that youve had to take some time to settle in, but youre really going to have to start applying yourself from now on.

Nagging teacher-speak aside, just what is it with PS3 release ...

KOEI has told Eurogamer that futuristic racer Fatal Inertia will be a better game on PS3.

The company is spending more time on it after the 360 version failed to ignite critical fuses when it was released in September. According to a spokesperson for the publisher, they're polishing up technical areas and putting together a more enticing demo than Live customers were treated to.

New content is a possibility, too, although nothing concrete is known at this point.
Fatal Inertia PS3 Coming Spring 2008 (News)

Oh, Fatal Inertia. Once announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive launch title by Koei, the Unreal Engine 3-powered racer eventually went multi-platform and released on Xbox 360 first, while the company struggled to get the PS3 version up to speed. The recent completion of Unreal Tournament III on PS3 means studios should have an easier time developing on Sony's hardware with Epic Games' engine, but that doesn't help the dozens and dozens of companies who have been attempting to make it work now.

Koei recently issues an updated release schedule to the media, with Fatal Inertia conspicuously absent from the list. When asked, the publisher said there was no formal release date for the futuristic racer, but they expected the PS3 version to arrive sometime in Spring 2008. There's no word on if the PS3 version will include additional content, but given the delays have been technical issues, 1UP wouldn't rule it out.

People can get a taste of the game right now, however, by logging into Xbox Live and downloading the demo.
There was clearly some confusion from the press release, but the official PR only mentions an Xbox 360 demo for FI, not a PS3 one. Confirmation from Koei that this is indeed the case at the link.
Not only is the title back on track, but Fatal Inertia is hitting the PS Store tomorrow (or perhaps Thursday if the scheduled updates up to now mean anything at all).
Using the game's Velocity race mode we zoomed around two of the game's six locations. The first, Paradise Isle, is a lush, tropical environment set in the blazing sun and littered with exotic plants and sandy beaches. The second, Lost Canyon, is a much more barren and ...
The PS3 version of Fatal Intertia has been delayed due to "difficulties" with the Unreal Engine's performance on the Sony hardware. The game was originally designed specifically for the system, yet is deemed to be "not running well enough" according to a Koei representative. The Xbox 360 version is to be released ahead of it, as delaying it further while the PS3 version is fixed wasn't deemed necessary.

The game was one of two titles that Koei chief Kenji Matsubara showed at Sony's PlayStation Premier this week, which came as a surprise after Koei canceled plans to release the game as a PS3 launch title, and had pledged it to Xbox 360 instead.

So it seems the futuristic hover car racer will be making its way to a Sixaxis near you soon.

It's a been a strange path. Koei's futuristic racer Fatal Inertia was originally announced as a PS3 launch title. The game missed launched, and Koei later announced that it was going to miss the PLAYSTATION 3 altogether. Instead, the title would be appearing on the Xbox 360. Well! The game is back on the PS3, it seems. Koei Chief Operating Officer Kenji Matsubara took the stage at Sony's Japan press event PLAYSTATION PREMIERE 2007 and showed titles headed for the PS3: Ni - OH, BLADESTORM and Fatal Inertia. Not sure if an official announcement was made or if, you know, Fatal Inertia was just slipped back in. Here's hoping no one notices!

According to a report from SPOnG, Koei is still in development of the Fatal Inertia title for PS3, thereby allaying fears of 'indefinite delay'.

SPOnG spoke with Koei's PR rep in the UK this morning (July 3) who assured us that Fatal Inertia was still in development for PS3 and "definitely would not be canned" as a number of reports have already suggested earlier today.

Lead Game Designer Michael Bond says of Fatal Inertia, "By designing Fatal Inertia's gameplay around a physics engine it not only allowed us to create a truly different driving model, but it also helped us create a set of dynamic weapons with multiple tactical applications¿ We've based many of the game's weapons on straightforward physical principles, and by doing so we're giving players the freedom to come up with their own creative ways of using them- ways that even we are still discovering."

More bad news for Sony this morning. Fatal Inertia, a futuristic racer originally announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive launch game, will instead be arriving only on the Xbox 360 this fall.

While the Xbox 360 version will ship on September 11, the PlayStation 3 version has been "delayed indefinitely," a Koei representative told Game|Life this morning.

Earlier this week news broke that Koei has announced that the PlayStation 3 games Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War and Fatal Inertia had been delayed.

Boomtown.net spoke to Koei UK about this delay, which regions are affected and the reasons behind it.

"At the moment the development cycles have been extended simply because of all the things the developers want to do with the new hardware," Koei's Mike Foley told Boomtown. "For Bladestorm it will come out in Japan first with a little delay for localisation before it hits Europe and the US."

"For Fatal inertia we are still working towards a global release," Mike continued. "So that's why for now we've just got it down for a summer release without any definite dates for each territory. So at the moment it's safe to say that the games are targeted for a summer release in general."
We havent exactly been deprived of futuristic racers over the last few years; from the 16-bit thrills of SNES classic F-Zero to the club-cool speed-bouts of Wipeout and Quantum Redshift, the genre has been ten a penny ever since someone figured out that Formula 1 would be much more exciting with big laser guns and The Prodigy thumping out trackside.

Still, Fatal Inertia - KOEI's first foray into the racing genre - genuinely looks to be more than just another cookie cutter hover-car racer, ...

Koei announces some slippage to two titles expected around console launch time.

The developer has announced today that the European PlayStation 3 launch of the futuristic racer Fatal Inertia and medieval hack'n slash Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War will now take place in summer 2007 rather than around launch time in March.

According to Koei the delay will ensure that, " Koei's development teams will continue to work on these titles up until release to ensure the highest levels of quality possible."
Anyway, if you're unfamiliar with Koei's PS3 and Xbox 360 title, in a nutshell it's a futuristic racer that combines, erm, racing with combat and features a physics engine allowing players to do the likes of blow chunks out of the environment to obstruct the opposition. New info and screenshots released by Koei this morning fill us in on some of the game's locations...
Citing problems with the Unreal Engine 3.0, the group was actively working to remedy their development delays to ship the former launch title before the end of '06.
We've yet to get fully acquainted with Fatal Intertia - the hovercraft-racing speedfest that melds Wipeout-style neon-trailing speedsters with huge, incredible racetracks that echo the podracing moments from Star Wars Episode One - but from these images the game looks like a high-speed blast, where overtaking can involve piloting your vehicle right underneath a rival's craft.

Several of Capcom and Koei's PlayStation 3 titles will be playable at next week's Tokyo Game Show, while Capcom has also spoken of new game announcements.

With expectation starting to build ahead of Tokyo's annual showcase, Capcom has pledged 12 demo units of Devil May Cry 4, while Koei aims to have playable versions of some of its PS3 titles on-hand, likely to include Fatal Inertia (a launch title), Bladestorm, Ni-Oh and Mahjong Taikai IV.

Koei will also be demonstrating Samurai Warriors Wave for Nintendo Wii, while Capcom will be offering hands-on time with Xbox 360 exclusive Lost Planet, but with PlayStation 3 making its public playable debut in Japan the Sony console is understandably the focus.

Railfan (Ongakukan)

Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)

Fatal Inertia (Koei)

Blade Storm (Koei)

Mahjong Taikai IV (Koei)

Coded Arms Assault (Konami Digital Entertainment)

Genji (SCEJ)

Formula One World Championship (SCEJ)

Heavenly Sword (SCEJ)

Lair (SCEJ)

MotorStorm (SCEJ)

Resistance Fall of Man (SCEJ)

The Eye of Judgment (SCEJ)

Warhawk (SCEJ)

Gran Turismo Series (SCEJ)

Minna no Golf 5 (aka Hot Shots Golf, SCEJ)

Ridge Racer (Bandai Namco Games)

Gundam Target in Sight (Bandai Namco Games)

Armored Core 4 (From Software)

All but the first game were previously announced. Given its publisher (and title), the first game is likely a train simulation game of some form.

The remaining 8 titles are currently a mystery, so we encourage wild speculation.

Sony will also have a theater in its booth which will show video footage of a total of 35 titles. We presume there will be some overlap with the playable titles and the video-only titles, but Sony wasn't clear about the matter.
The PlayStation 3 launch is on the horizon, and thrusting up toward it are the hover-racers of Koei's Fatal Inertia. The company is promising that this high-speed experience will be one of the highlights of the PS3... but we're not convinced yet. Check out this batch of new screens, which show off the game's wilderness courses and high-speed fliers. These cruisers come in four classes, each completely customizable and offering different statistics for each gamer's different play style.
