The Top 7… hated habits of the mainstream media

See how videogames turn respectable journalists into raving lunatics

Words: Mikel Reparaz, GamesRadar US

Today marks the beginning of the Week of Hate , GamesRadar’s annual celebration of all things callow, lame and detestable about videogames and the industry that surrounds them. Stay tuned all this week for a fresh round of features and videos dedicated to everything we hate about the hobby we love.

To non-gamers, videogames must seem like an impossibly dense hobby. Never mind the complicated controllers or the difficulty of navigating 3D space; there are reams of information to learn, from the histories of hundreds of popular franchises to the particulars of each console’s online services. Approaching modern games with expectations shaped by Pac-Man or Pong is like trying to catch up with superhero comics when all you know is “Spider-Man’s costume is red.”

Above: Who knows what hidden dangers could be lurking here? Better act all crazy until we know for sure

To journalists in the mainstream media – whose job is to essentially become experts on new subjects every day, often with no more than a few hours’ preparation – games must seem especially daunting. Especially for the many reporters who see them as frivolous children’s toys and, therefore, not meriting research, respect or understanding. As a result, many otherwise respectable news outlets suddenly become judgmental, uninformed and outright sensationalistic when asked to cover games. Especially controversial ones.

Of course, some of their habits are more infuriating than others. What follows are the worst offenders.

(Special thanks to GamePolitics, which provided the sources for most of the research done for this article)

"The two had been shot numerous times in the head and chest with two different weapons. The gunman, or gunmen, never even needed to get out of the vehicle to complete the murders. … You get extra points for that, right?" – Deanna Watson, Wichita Falls Times Record News

“[Grand Theft Auto IV] awards points creating as much as [sic] crime and destruction as possible in a city.” The Daily Mail

This is one we’ve heard over and over again, particularly in reference to Grand Theft Auto: videogames reward you with “points” for doing horrible things, like beating up hookers, killing cops and running over pedestrians. Not only is this untrue, but the thinking behind it is outrageously insulting. To condemn a game for awarding points is to assume that gamers – and particularly children - do things for the infantile thrill of seeing little numbers add up in some remote corner of the screen. The logical extension of this thinking is that, because gamers’ reptile brains are so wildly turned on by math, we would then wander out into the real world, ready to do harm for some imagined numerical reward.

The truth, of course, is that GTA doesn’t award points for doing anything. Neither do most modern games. The action and story are their own rewards, pedestrians are run over purely for the perverse thrill of doing something bad (or out of clumsiness) and archaic concepts like “points” are relegated to more simple action games and the minds of people who last played a videogame in 1982.

Seriously, how long has it been since points mattered to anybo-

Oh, right.

this article should be re-named

"Fox News Vs. Grand Theft Auto"

seems like that was all it was, with a dash of Mass Effect and a touch of Animal Crossing.

far from the best Top 7

Although people who whinge about gaming really piss me off we should consider this with a nod to the future.
I see two possible outcomes here: either common sense will prevail or (the more likely outcome) due to a quirk of human biology all the miserable bastards will get old and die solving the problem in a neat and tidy manner.

So true GamesRadar, so true. Thanks for showing the bull gamers and the games industry have to put up with. It seems like no one in mainstream media knows what a game is anymore.

Sigh, its amazing that the uninformed usually are the ones who have to inform the even more uninformed. lots of parents don't even care what their kid plays and they don't want to know.

Wow, just goes to show that people enjoy being ignorant. I don't remember a cell phone number in any GTA that would let me instantly watch porn? And really, it's the parents fault if your child is ten and playing GTA and gears of war. and really annoying on live.

I wish "Zombie" was a video game. Keep it simple, y'know, minimalism.

Has the news media even -heard- of the ESRB? Sure, it isn't that effective, but enough to prevent 14 year olds from buying M rated games. y'know. Why you need an -I.D.- And sure, they could get their parents to buy it for them, but, chances are about split 50-50 that parents will or wont buy it for them.

God. How I love how Jeff Qeily, and informed game journalist just owned that news station who thought they had some sort of 'evidence' that it 'forces' you into that scene. Now I don't have a 360, nor' have I played Mass Effect, but I know. That's a load of -Crap-

The media loves to blow everything out of proportion. Even if it isn't videogames. Like when Obama said "Special Olympics" on Leno, they acted like he said "I hate retards and gay people. Oh, and Death to America!!"

I also love how people don't care about stuff that might actually matter. Like when video comes out of a Chinese military boat harrassing an American military boat, no one cares at all.

some how i can imagane the news some days after god of war 3 is realeased. Fox news headlines would be smth like "A kids games on the ps3 allows kids yo rip monster appart, and see their guts to earn points, be just pressing one button" and they will completly ignore the m rated and the all the other warnings, like allways and they will blame videogames instead of the one they should blame for allowing kids to play this
