The Top 7... Games you won’t get to until 2009

This holiday, even awesome games are falling by the wayside. Here are a few we predict will fall by yours

Words: Mikel Reparaz, GamesRadar US

Edged out by: Nobody really giving a shit about Lara Croft anymore.

Why it’ll have to wait: Actually, you might want to wait on this one; if the reviews are any indication, it’s possible that a future DLC expansion pack might make the game considerably longer. As it stands, however, Tomb Raider: Underworld’s six levels have drawn fire from critics who complain that – while the gameplay itself is pretty good – the game feels unfinished and ends too abruptly.

Above: Can gamers actually be tired of staring at this ass? Sales point to yes

Really, though, the thing that’s keeping Underworld away from gamers’ immediate attention has nothing to do with length or gameplay. It’s just that Lara Croft isn’t anywhere near as beloved (outside of the UK, anyway) as she used to be, and exploring trap-filled ruins just hasn’t been the same since Prince of Persia redefined it. Couple that knowledge with middling review scores and the fact that the new Prince of Persia is due out any second now, and it’s easy to understand why a lot of you aren’t going to touch this one until January, if at all.

Edged out by: The sad, simple fact that original games are at a severe disadvantage during the holidays.

Why it’ll have to wait: Did we say that Valkyria Chronicles has “Okami 2008*” written all over it? We might have spoken too soon. While Mirror’s Edge’s free-running, minimally violent first-person action might have captured the minds of a lot of gamers, it hasn’t exactly been capturing their wallets in record numbers. While we’d certainly like to see Mirror’s Edge do well, early sales reports haven’t been promising.

Above: Eh, maybe later

Maybe it’s because of the way heroine Faith comes off as glassy-eyed and humorless in the commercials, or maybe it’s the combination of a first-person viewpoint and fast platforming gameplay, but something seems to be putting off potential buyers. Then again, maybe it’s as simple the general vibe we’ve been getting from our co-workers and colleagues across the industry, that Mirror’s Edge is a game everyone would really like to play… right after they’re finished with all the others. If that’s true for gamers at large, then Mirror’s Edge epitomizes the idea behind this article, and chances are that even if you intend to buy and play it before the year is out, it’s not at the top of your list. No, you’ll probably focus on other stuff for now, and shift your focus back to Mirror’s Edge once you’ve either got more time on your hands or – and this is, sadly, more likely – the game has found its way into bargain bins.

*And again! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

I think that Valkyria Chronicles will end up like Okami... quite sad

Most of the games that fall here are ones where the story line sucks or the main character does. Or the gameplay and graphics aren't up to par. Even a game with okay graphics and gameplay will outshine all others with an amazing story. If developers want us to buy there games give us some incentive or something to look forward to after we beat it. All games look good now on the next gen consoles it's the story line that really is the foundation to any game.

The one and only reason I'm not buying Mirror's Edge is because they decided to not release it for us PC folks until January. Their loss.

I've already played the hell out of LBP and Mirror's Edge, but you're spot on about all the others- I fit the descriptions for Valkyria Chronicles and Resistance 2 perfectly, lol.

i'll be playing Mirror's Edge in a couple weeks. The demo was fun and a half. But as stated, PoP will fill some free running cravings as well. and I still have AC too. ah hell...

I couldn't give less of a crap if people don't play the first six games on this list but Mirror's Edge need playing by everyone. Maybe just rent it, its very short for a full price game, but imo you're looking at another Portal moment here. Its so different and the sense of liberation is just fantastic. Play it people.

Well, I really like the idea for this article. But unfortunately (and I'm probably the only one in this position) I have absolutely no desire to play ANY of the games on this list. Actually, SOCOM and FC2 are the only games that came out this season that I am even remotely interested in, and I already have those. Maybe I'm just picky though. Either way, good job Mikel

The one and only reason I'm not buying Mirror's Edge is because they didn't release it on PC yet. Their loss.

I knida noticed half of the games are Playstations exclusives.

And a nice, big LOL at the Okami joke.

Another fantastic article GR!

does not really break my heart that we won't get these games this year.
bron1417  - 11 months 8 days ago
yea it's a shame these games wont be played/bought till later on.

Hmmm, most of these games I wouldn't get if I had the systems to do so. Out of 'em all I'd play Resistance 2 and (maybe) Mirror's Edge, although I wasn't much of a fan of Mirror's Edge when I rented it.

I would play Valkyria Chronicles if it were on the 360, I don't own a PS3.

I rented Mirror's Edge, loved it and plan on buying it very soon as well as Restistance 2 (Even though I kinda thought Resistance 1 was "meh"). I also recently rented Tomb Raider: Underworld and actually found it pretty enjoyable but I agree with the sentiment that it felt either rushed or cut-off for DLC.

I'm indifferent to Little Big Planet- cool idea, not on my radar.

Not a huge fan of RPG's so the other suggestions are not in my list either...

i loved resistance had it since launch. but it is a shame littlebigplanet is on there. that was really fun i never bough it and probaly wont till it is cheaper so yeah most of this list is perfect except R2 being on there
