The Top 7... Best ports on inferior systems

Great versions of great games on lo-tech platforms

Words: Shane Patterson, GamesRadar US

Believe it or not, the version of Web of Shadows that plays on your TV is - on average - scoring lower than the DS version. That’s not to say WoS is completely terrible. On the contrary; reviews are pointing to Spidey’s latest Bronx romp as his best game since the fantabulous Spider-Man 2. But the series has grown stale. Without a movie to tie-in (at least for another few years), your friendly neighborhood freak is certainly overexposed.

On the other hand, WoS on the DS has enjoyed a bit of critical praise due to the game’s Metroidvania-esque gameplay. Meaning, the game is similar to a side-scrolling action adventure wherein you collect power-ups that enable you access to other sections of the open world.

However, we should point out that while the DS version is scoring higher, that doesn’t necessarily mean the game’s better on the DS. It just means that scored against other DS games, Web of Shadows is pretty good. The game just happens to be averaging higher than the next-gen systems.

How can an eight-year-old game ported to match the very functionality of the Wii disappoint so much? Samba de Amigo for the arcades and Dreamcast was a delightful romp through rhythm-based gameplay. The DC hit came packaged with its own maracas for you to raise and lower your hands in unison to. The Wii version obviously needed no pack-in peripherals - although that hasn’t stopped Nintendo from releasing so many - yet the game fails in replicating the simplest tasks (movement).

Above: Remember a simpler time when things worked?

See the Wii has this built-in accelerometer that enables the machine to read your arm placement and flicks of the wrist when holding the Wiimote and Nunchuk. However, at higher difficulties, Samba de Amigo doesn’t register your fast-paced flailing, which in turn causes the game to fail you. Even if you move gently, the Wii senses nothing. Thanks! Wii: the system invented specifically for movement, yet registers none.

Above: Who gives a shit?

Not only that, but even with out-of-date rhythm gameplay, Sega tried to add a little some minigames to the mix, all of which are derivative and lame. No online play either. Great.

Why do people go like "fifth" or "first to say 'cr@p''"? It's dumb as 776H (flip it upside-down).

I still remember how disappointed I was to find out that the SNES Aladdin wasn't the same as the Genesis one I'd seen kids playing at Toys 'R Us. So disappointed, in fact, that I eventually convinced my parents to buy me a Genesis for that reason alone.

People who call "first" are retards. That's all I'm saying.

3 reasons why I love GR:

1. They likes the Genesis.

2. All the people in the comments either say "first" or they piss and moan about the person who said "first".

3. This reason. (but we’re willing to say the 360 excels over the PS3 in many key areas)

I love you guys. Awesome article. And 360 FTW.

The PS3 Xbox 360 thing has been going on too long! They have about the same performance and power, the main thing is prefrence if you like great graphics and some older games (not at the same time go PS3, if you like good online play and constantly evolving and updating games go 360. No point in arguing now pick and be silent my I pick 360 what about you?

Hm...I didn't know Web of Shadow's was like that for the DS...interesting. What about every Castlevania game is better on the inferior portables? It's more of a series thing than a 'game by game' thing, but it's still valid

Excellent article, Shane!

In addition to the points you mentioned, the 360 version of The Orange Box will also get the PC expansions. Take that PS3!! (Not a fanboy, I just like to stick it to the man)

I played the hell out of Orange Box on my 360. It became so scratched that when I was working my way through Half-Life 2 Episode 2 with that damn, loathable, evil, infuriating, garden gnome and whenever I threw him aside to defense myself, if I stepped on the gnome he would fling me hundreds of feet off in the air and off the level. F***ing gnome.

the orange box was crap some parts were really awsome but over all it seemed kinda life less

Good article, except of course the flame-war inciting comment. Hmm, Microsoft has PCs as well as the 360...so who is actually the man in this case? PS3 is better. I play it because I want my stuff to work, not mock me with red lights and its incapability to work. The 360 has better online play than the PS3, but I really don't want to listen to 12-year olds shouting out how big their p3n15 is. I don't want to have to buy half of my game through DLC, and when I do go online, I don't want to have to pay extra for the full online experience. And you might have the Orange Box better-ness, but Konami would first release a MGS for the iPod touch and iPhone before they would release a port for the 360....and those who say "first" without adding anything constructive to say are most definitely retards.
