Fallout 3

Also known as: Fallout III

The Top 7… 2008 games we can't stop playing

Who needs a sequel when the last one was so damn good?

Words: Brett Elston, GamesRadar US

5 - Grand Theft Auto IV

Release date: April 29, 2008 (one year, three months ago)

Why we’re all still playing it: People are still playing the five-year-old San Andreas, so it’s no surprise thousands of gamers are still tooling around IV’s vastly improved version of Liberty City. There’s a crapton of missions to accomplish, intertwining storylines to resolve and Achievements/Trophies to acquire, and that’s saying nothing of the game’s myriad side missions, time-devouring collectibles and omg-is-that-real Easter eggs.

Above: The now-famous beating heart inside the Statue of Happiness

Xbox 360 players have even more reasons to keep playing – two exclusive episodes of lengthy (and pricey) DLC. The Lost and Damned landed in February, and the newly announced Ballad of Gay Tony hits sometime this fall, both of which extend the main game by 5-10 hours. Still no word if they’ll ever make it to PlayStation 3, but even without ‘em there’s tons of excellent multiplayer to chew up your afternoons. Cops and Crooks, anyone?

4 - Gears of War 2

Release date: November 7, 2008 (eight months ago)

Why we’re all still playing it: Co-op goes a long way. Beating the game by yourself is no way to play Gears, so you practically have to try it twice. Then, the only way to truly experience the series is by playing on Insane, so that tends to lead to another blood-splattered journey through the Locust’s home turf. But, while the campaign is certainly replay-friendly, it’s not going to last months upon months – that’s where the Horde mode comes in.

Gears 2’s Horde Mode is so compelling, so addicting that “Horde Mode” has become the generic term applied to any competitive co-op involving waves of increasingly stronger enemies. Left 4 Dead aped it with “Survival,” World at War has Nazi Zombies, even Halo 3: ODST has a new “Firefight” mode that plays just like Horde. The standard versus modes are still popular, but working together, back to back while the enemy continuously returns faster, tougher and stronger than before, is a one-upping adrenaline rush that simple deathmatch can’t beat.

I'd like to personally add Street Fighter IV, can't seem to get enough of it myself. Whats apparent though, is that most of these games feature DLC as an extension to the gameplay, which just proves that DLC is the new expansion pack.

@Jacob816: because it's strictly 2008 games. CoD4 came out in 2007.

I see why cod4 didnt make it (2007) but still, some larger mention should have been made, usually has about 70000 players online whenever i sign in. An achievement! Great article, i was addicted to L4D and Fallout 3 but monster hunter 2 has to take the crown :( 700 hours + and im still not tired of it.

And the weird thing! Im not the minority, the people who reach the top of that games brutal learning curve always play for at least 200 hours. What a game, one of the few reasons to play a psp :P

I think a few people are still playing 2007 games:
- Halo 3
- CoD4
- Mass Effect (although I think a lot I'm hearing about were sparked by ME2 hype)

The first two are a bit obvious though.

My friends are always asking me why I keep playing L4D ("Isn't it boring playing the same thing over and over again?")
Yeah, your answer preeeetty much sums it all up :D

COD 4 wasn't released in 2008. Title of article comprehension fail.

Because of the little pocket money I get because of the recession and my computers limitations, I am ussually about 2 years behind all the recent games. At the moment Im still playing orange box and enjoying the updates on TF2.

Only game on there that i'm still playing is Fallout3. Blowing mutants into chunks of offal never gets old

First off, I can agree that Horde and Zombies are still the main reasons why I play Gears 2 and CoD: WaW. Second, I can agree that I still play San Andreas, and at times I think that it's better than GTA 4 simply because of the sheer size, and the easy-input cheats, and of course: airplanes. And not-realistic physics. That makes things fun.

@Jacob816,
you said Why CoD:Waw over CoD4.
It's because this article is for games from 2008, not 2007 like CoD4 was. Thanks for coming out, and have a good evening.

You really nailed it with this article, especially as far as GTA IV is concerned. Whenever I between new releases I always head back to Liberty City and spend a few hours causing explosive traffic jams on the freeway or shoving people down stairs or under trains. Priceless.
Also, can't wait to Fisto some aliens in Fallout 3!

Wow, sounds like I need to get off by ass and buy World at War...

The game I am still playing is Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. Seriously, I must have beaten that game at least 4 or 5 times. I can't get enough.
