MotorStorm: Pacific Rift

Also known as: MotorStorm 2

The most misleading game ads of all time

May not be representative of in-game footage...

Words: Dave Meikleham, GamesRadar UK

Back in 2000, N64 games – especially N64 games that required the ill-advised expansion pack – didn't exactly have much street cred. Aware of this, the Big N and Rare decided it was time to enter into some risqué business advertising. On paper, it made good business sense. After all, Sony had opened games up to a whole new audience thanks to their edgy PlayStation ads.

What better way to sell a sexy, female-lead, sci-fi FPS than some of this…

While we’ve got no problems with bumpy parts of the girly variety, the whole concept of selling Perfect Dark on the back of sex appeal is truly bewildering. Especially when this is your lead character…

With the Dreamcast and Sonic’s sexy, next-gen curves already available to gamers, Joanna Dark’s pixelated mess of a face and blocky 64 bit-sponsored textures hardly said ‘Sex on a cartridge’. Misleading, then. Not that we mind too much, of course. The final game was ace and deserved to sell as many copies as possible.

The first MotorStorm was undeniably exciting. Probably the only game worth owning at the PS3’s launch, it combined break neck speed with sickening break your neck physics and vehicle argy-bargy. And what could possibly go wrong with the sequel when it looks like the video below?

Exciting, no? Well, it would be if half of the death-defying footage shown in the ad held the merest glimmer of truth. Hurtling hundreds of feet from the back of a biplane to meet the starting line-up below? Awesome! Pity the actual game always starts like this…

Above: Not a death-baiting plane jump in sight

The last 20 seconds of gameplay may also look exciting, but are pretty misleading compared with our experiences of the game. We’d say a more accurate trailer would take out all the explosions of bikers getting twatted and replace them with infuriating footage of drivers getting stuck behind tiny rocks and palm trees.

wow, that was a pretty interesting ad for a N64 game. it even showed her friggin panties. i don't even see that on ads NOW unless it for victoria's secret or somethin. but for a console. heh, interesting.

I though the Halo 3 ad was shown was a concept level.

I gotta say, I do like the usage of Chopin for the Halo ad. All in all, I think that still was quite a cool ad...

I remember the Perfect Dark ad... I was 11 or 12 at the time so the sex appeal kinda sold me- too bad the game was nothing like that!

Did I say "Too bad"? I meant good news, because even though I had gotten the game for sex appeal (Which it didn't have >_>) I stayed for the completely badass and insanely impressive game that it was contained within that cartridge.

I consider to this day that the Perfect Dark ad mislead me in a good way- my horny teenage self got a gutpunch for it's stupidity but my gamer self got an awesome game!

It does suck to be mislead by ads, but the marketing often works. I can say that I was grabbed by the Halo 3 and Perfect Dark ads when I first saw them (though I was already planning to buy both of those games.)

The whole CG graphics or showing screens from a more powerful console are the worst, if you ask me. Those truly seem aimed to mislead, whereas the ones involving real actors, miniature, etc. are obviously not intended to represent actual gameplay.

man, I loved the first MotorStorm.
No male in my classroom had ever seen such graphics. On a school trip when we saw the PS3, complete with Motorstorm, we stood, mouths agape, for a full 45 minutes

I think that the other Halo 3 teaser trailer where the kids are star gazing and it cuts to a scene where Master Cheif is running through crowds of covenant soldiers and throws down a bubble sheild to protect himself from on oncoming missle is very misleading. I woud KILL to play that scene out in a game. But instead, we get stuck with the least epic (as mentioned) piece of crap in its potentially epic place.

Wow nice again Gamesradar using a Youtube video that was removed.

Lost Planet's was also a good example, huge raging battles... but the game was confined to just your character most of the time...

Nice ad. You can't really blame ppl for making really misleading ads, they need to sell there games, and thats how they do it... tho the sega dreamcast one is horrible! i wonder if ppl actually believed that...
