QOTW: What peripheral let you down the most?

Answer our weekly question and check out our favorite user answers from last week!

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Every week the hosts of TalkRadar present and answer a new "Question of the Week" - a personal inquiry which unearths some of our deepest, and sometimes most sinister, gaming memories. Everyone is encouraged to answer each week's question, so go ahead, tell us your most glorious, nostalgic, or shameful story!

This week's question:

What peripheral let you down the most?

We've all drooled over one peripheral or another in the past, and when we finally acquired the things that would change gaming forever and held them in our trembling hands, we expected our TVs to explode with rainbow-colored debris of purified fun. That didn't happen. The grey, plastic reality of our purchases silently glared at us through cheap red buttons and glossy light sensors, and our anticipation metamorphosed into disappointment and bitterness. Which peripheral made you bitter?

Answer this week's question in the comments!

Questions can also be answered in the QOTW forum thread. Our favorite posts this week will be read next week on TalkRadar 68, and appear in the next edition of this article. Listen to TalkRadar 67 on Friday for our answers!

Last week's question:

Have you beaten every game in a series? Which one?

Below are a few of last week's answers that tickled our collective fancies, but since we can't feature them all here, check out last week's article and forum thread for more...

"I played every Half Life game except the expansion packs to the original. I played HL2 first when it came out for Xbox. I didn't have a good PC for gaming so I never got to play the original until I lucked out and found it for PS2 at Gamestop"

"Hmm... I've beat all the games in the Luminous Arc series, all the games in the Kingdom Heart series (re: chain of memories doesn't count because its the same as the GBA one, and I beat that) and that's about it. I don't buy a game just because it's the sequel, prequel, expansion, whatever of a game I already have, that promotes marketing bullshit and lets companies sell tons of the same stuff with facelifts (Halo: ODST, Pokemon). Both Luminous Arcs were good and the quality went up instead of down with the second one and Kingdom Hearts vastly improved the battle system of the first game in the 2nd one. That doesn't mean I'll sell out to any game with the words Kingdom Hearts or Luminous Arc on it. I refuse to promote the crap that marketing tries to pull on gamers of the world."

KillDrone wrote...
"While I only consider the Naughty Dog versions of Crash Bandicoot the REAL ones. I will admit to playing and beating 98% of the Crash Bandicoot games."

"The Contra series without using the Konami code at all in any of them. Also any of the Gradius games that came over there as well."

"I really wish I could answer "Zelda," but Phantom Hourglass is such a damned bad game that I can't bring myself to beat it. It's funny, because I'd beaten all the other games in the series by about a year ago... but that one game is just so f***ing boring.

Anyway, I have beaten the entire Half-Life saga, as well as the Paper Mario series. But those series don't contain all that many games, so it's nothing to be proud of, really...

Oh, and I will beat Phantom Hourglass by the end of the year. It was one of the New Year's resolutions I made in January, hahaha."

"Space Quest. The only time I've forced myself to play a couple of old school VGA or EGA graphic adventure games to completion. The second one Vohaul's Revenge being the most difficult to get into since it didn't have a remake."

If anybody even remembers this, the one that disappointed me the most was the Wireless GBA Adapter that took the place of the link cable and was packaged with Fire Red/Leaf Green. While it worked great for those two games, I find it absolutely lazy that nintendo couldn't make it trick the GBA into thinking it was a link cable, therefor making it compatable with any GBA game. Yes, this could have problems if you had more than two in a given 15-foot radius playing the same game in the same exact mode at the same time ON ACCIDENT, but that could be alleviated with the wavebird channel approach.

the wii zapper. its just a plastic case that holds the wiimote. the only good game for it is Links crossbow training!

It was a Nyko light gun peripheral for the Wii. Not that I should have really bought it in the first place, but I was so psyched that I could actually shoot it like a gun, and it LOOKED like a gun. But it was too top-heavy and the controls were just...just awful.

The first time I bought a MadCatz controller. We've all been there.

WiiSpeak. When I got it, I figured "Finally! Voice chat on the Wii!". Then I realized no other games took the time to support it, it was locked down by friend codes, and NOBODY ELSE OWNED THE THING.

I would have to say the Rock Band 1 drums. I thought it was really going to be like playing a real drum set, but it turns out, all you do is bang on rubber pads that are WAY TOO loud. In fact, they are so loud, you can't hear the game sometimes.

Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit, anyway I bought it at my 11th birthday and so god damn exited but only one prob, the infamous red dead drum, I can only activated it by wacking it VERY hard, the first time I first whacked at it a hundred times and the last beat broke my fingers, 2 weeks after the bandages were out wacked at it Bam the drum sticks holding thing broke and went inside the drums, I was really mad and open the red's pad(rubber)and I found out the wire's barely connect, went to the shop ask for them to glue the wire's back, work, but I can't put back the pad and then went home played with it, but I got used to beating it VERY hard and the drum is now paralyzed, now I can never drum again. :(

Everything for the Wii practically.

The Zapper, WiiFit, WiiSpeak, and WiiMotion +.

Fuck, can't there be a Wii game where you use all of those peripherals you used once? Skateboarding, FPS, with swords, and voice chat with friends maybe?

I wasted so much money on that shit. And nintendo doesn't care, since their rolling in money.

Wiimotion+.
I got bored of it one week after I got it. Also the damned peripheral had to be recalibrated everytime you shook too hard or your Wii-mote died. By the time the calibration was done, the wiimote died. Grrr!!!
Th Gamecube GameboyAdvance cable was freaking annoying to me too. I couldn't hook up my SP or it would hold down the L & R buttons. It annoyed every time I played FF:CC and Pokemon Colesseum/XD.

The eReader for GBA. Put one little crinkle in your card, and no ExciteBike for you.

I have a BIG peripheral that let me down, and it is called the [long drum roll]

[end drum roll] WII REMOTE! I bought the console just for the laughs and to see what Sony wanted so much (with their Sixaxis controllers), and I have to say, out of 1,000,000 moves I made with that remote the first day, it thought they were all whatever I needed at that time (only had Wii Sports for a while, then got Wii Fit, and that is it), whether it was swinging a racket for tennis, hitting a golf ball in golf, throwing a baseball in baseball, rolling a bowling ball in bowling, or throwing an uppercut in boxing (the only game that required the retarded Nunchuk), so instead of the advertised "1 to 1 compatibility," it was more like 1 to 1,000,000 compatibility, which was just changed to 1 to 1,000 compatibility with the Motion+ (I have tried it in stores)

THe drums for guitar hero world tour for the wii, I have it done how to play them but only on easy, and most of my friends have to play it on begginer, then again most of my fiends stink at guitar hero so they ussually choose beginner or easy on any instrument.
Corsair89  - 2 months 29 days ago
Frankly, all of 'em.
sklorbit  - 2 months 29 days ago
gotta say the zapper. more like the failure
RandomIdoit  - 2 months 29 days ago
@ peace4me
What's the point of having a DSi anyway?
So it has a camera. Well, call me old-fashioned, but I have a CAMERA for a camera, plus it won't even play GBA games. I guess the DSi dissappointed me the most.

The freakin Guitar Hero drum kit. This thing totally destroyed any form of basic fun play and made it difficult to figure out anything after playing Rock Band for so long. And not the Rock Band drum kit, that thing is fine. red for snare, the other three for toms and green for the occasional crash. Now I have to try and figure out a drum kit AGAIN. Sucks.
