Dead Space

The original and terrifying new IP from EA cribs tricks from all the greats of survival horror's past, but manages to do it so well that it doesn't really matter. The action and controls are fantastic, and the atmosphere and monsters will get under your skin. We wish there was more of the original stuff, like the inventive Zero G sections, but we can live with this, since it might be the best game of this type since Resident Evil 4.

I am in the middle of playing Dead Space 1 on my PS3. While I am not a video game expert I am seriously disappointed in this game. I would rate it a 5 out of 10 and the reason is that I get killed so often and most of the time it takes forever to die and then another eternity to get resurrected and then, to top it all off, you can wind up doing most of the stuff you did just before you got killed all over again. I'm on chapter 4 and by now have probably spent 2 hours waiting to die and be resurrected. I just finished both versions of Bioshock and liked them much better. You get killed and bang, your back, very near the scene of your demise. I am seriously thinking of just trading it in for a copy of Amnesia.

Dead Space - hands-on
Two new blood-basted areas have our full attention
May 16, 2008
The first Dead Space walkthrough we attended wowed us with grotesque monsters right out of The Thing and an oppressive atmosphere that screamed Alien, so the skeleton of a great game seemed intact. However, we couldn't go all-out crazy for the game until we sat down and blasted some otherworldly creatures for ourselves; now that we have, our pre-emptive excitement is one step closer to validation. We're happy to report, based on » Read Full Dead Space preview
Dead Space - updated hands-on
In your parent's basement, no one can hear you scream
Mar 03, 2008
EA have clearly been shamefully stealing furtive glances over the shoulders of their peers before furiously scribbling borrowed ideas into their code for Dead Space, but the end result is clever, engaging and wonderfully scary. So, are you ready for a hands-on report based entirely on increasingly wavering comparisons? You are? Then let’s go!Dead Space is a bit like Event Horizon, placing you on a ship, the USG Ishimura, that’s » Read Full Dead Space preview
Dead Space
Filling the void with horror
Jan 11, 2008
Jan 11, 2008 No need to be very afraid with this one - at least, not as far as the games quality is concerned. Two of our correspondents have sat down for extensive run-throughs of Dead Space; both have come back from EA HQ with good words tumbling from their slack-jawed mouths. Its hard to believe that no one has thought to mine the ‘haunted house in space theme for a videogame project before this, given that theres an entire bloated genre of this stuff in » Read Full Dead Space preview
Hands-on: Dead Space
World's first play of astro-shocker
Dec 04, 2007
Dec 4, 2007 A worrying clanging noise began building in volume aboard the Ishimura, the vessel serving as the setting for Event Horizon-ish galactic horrorfest Dead Space. We were warned. “Be careful, this is LOUD”, guffawed Glen Schofield, Executive Producer on the game. Even so, we werent quite prepared for the hurricane that came out of the speakers the first time we came up against the Necromorphs, and we nearly deposited the coffee wed been drinking directly onto EAs plush » Read Full Dead Space preview

The future of survival horror chokes our pants with poo
Oct 08, 2007
Oct. 9, 2007 Lo and behold, EA makers of all things sequel, all things licensed, are set to unleash an original IP on us. So rarely does the behemoth publisher step out from behind its annual release schedule, we were all a little shocked that this bold foray would be so uncharacteristically, well, mature. From what we've seen of Dead Space, a futuristic survival horror game (or a "sci-fi horror" as the devs are aptly calling it) set largely on an infested ship is looking to take full » Read Full Dead Space preview
Dead Space: first 12 shots
First look at EA's Alien-styled survival horror
Sep 24, 2007
Sept 24, 2007 EA has fomally announced Dead Space, a brand new sci-fi survival horror that's being billed as videogame imagining of Event Horizon and Alien. Check out the first 12 screens here. Having seen the short teaser 'movie' over at the official website, we can confim (at least in this clip) it's looking as gory as the developer is promising - just check out the hurl level of the decomposing corpse. The game's lead character is introduced as Isaac Clarke, a space-station repair guy on » Read Full Dead Space preview
