Dark Sector

Hands-on with a polished build of Digital Extremes' techno-thriller

The usual complement of assault rifles and shotguns are in place here, and all can be plucked from fallen (and in some cases living) soldiers, but there's a catch: a lock on the guns will only allow them to be used for a few seconds before a security override disables them. Not only does this create a sense of urgency as you scramble to grab a weapon and empty it into nearby foes before it's rendered useless, but it means Hayden's default weapon, the Guyver-esque glaive that can be thrown to cut off heads and arms before it returns boomerang-style, will get plenty of use.

It's not just in decapitations and eviscerations, though; the glaive is intrinsically tied to Tenno's transformations, slowly unlocking the ability to be thrown with four times the force (thanks to a special timed hold-and-release mechanic of the shoulder buttons), and even the ability to use a Heavenly Sword-style Aftertouch to steer the glaive post-throw (and yes, for those wondering the PS3 version supports SIXAXIS tilt to steer). This is in addition to being able to suck up elemental properties like fire, ice and electricity to deal damage to enemies (some of whom have elemental weaknesses) or unlock doors, so clearly DE has more in mind for the glaive than just a boomerang with blades.

Early on in the game, you'll be able to buy weapons that Hayden can use without a time limit, and here’s where the game's customization aspects come into play, allowing him to mix and match different stocks and add-ons to bolster the base properties of the myriad firearms in the game.
