PLAYSTATION 3 gamers will finally get a taste, or a barrage, of Command & Conquer Real-time Strategy (RTS) gaming at the end of March 2009. Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition will be available on March 24th for the PS3. If you've been holding out for the PS3 release, you'll be treated to the best edition of Red Alert 3 yet. Video will be in HD thanks to the Blu-ray format. Although EA has confirmed that Red Alert 3 doesn't support the PLAYSTATION 3 keyboard/mouse functionality, they promise that the "CommandStick 2.0" design will make it easy for all gamers to control and issue their orders.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 developer EA Los Angeles has explained why PS3 owners have had to wait so long for the RTS title's release.

"I think we just announced it too soon to be perfectly frank," EALA senior producer Amer Ajami told CVG adding that the dev's single core engine meant "it just took us longer" to get the game finished for PS3.

EA has officially announced that Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: The Ultimate Edition will be released in March for PlayStation 3.

Last week GamersDigest reported on the fact that an 'Ultimate Edition' of Red Alert 3 was seen as a listing on the EA store, but was removed soon after.

It was classed as a rumour and has died down because of the lack of news on the game, but today some new images were uploaded to Sony's Playstation site, and when GamersDigest saw 'Red Alert 3 Ultimate Edition' in the title they had to have a look.

The next installment of Electronic Arts' Command & Conquer RTS franchise for PC and Xbox 360, Red Alert 3, is just about ready to roll, hitting North American retail at the end of this month.

Ahead of the title's release, preview trailers generated buzz and amusement over one of the game's most standout decisions -- to incorporate real actors like Tim Curry, J.K. Simmons, Jenny McCarthy and George Takei for hyperbolic cinematics.

In some ways, this is clearly an intentional nostalgic echo of earlier C&C games, which were some of the first to use high-quality filmed full-motion video in the 1990s.

But why do it in 2008? Gamasutra recently sat down with EA Los Angeles senior producer Amer Ajami and producer Greg Kasavin, who played "a little bit" of a role in the decisions and casting around the live-action cinematics.

Back in June, EA announced that the PS3 version of Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 was being put on hold to move available resources to the development of the Xbox 360 and PC versions. According to EA Los Angeles producer Amer Ajami, the PS3 was tough to develop for, and at the time, the game engine they were developing on wasn't designed with PlayStation in mind.

So now, two months later, we decided to contact EA for an update on the current status of the PS3 version. What we got back was a short, simple, unsatisfying response.

Despite dismissing reports earlier this morning, EA has confirmed to CVG that the PlayStation 3 version of Red Alert 3 has been put on hold.An EA spokesperson told CVG that, "development of the PlayStation 3 version of Red Alert 3 is on hold" and that "EA LA was focusing resources on developing for the PC and Xbox 360, for release this Autumn."
