It hasn’t even been 40 years since Computer Space became the first commercial game, and what began as little more than dandruff on a black screen is already threatening photo-, audio- and physical realism. ...

Codemasters has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz it has pulled a major advertising campaign for the PlayStation 3 version of Colin McRae: DIRT.
The publisher has cancelled the TV campaign as a sign of respect following McRae's death last weekend.

"With consideration to and in agreement with McRae's family, there was a stop put on the TV ads that were planned to run on Sky channels at the weekend and through this week," said a spokesperson for Codemasters.
Racing legend Colin McRae, his son, and two family friends died in a helicopter crash on Saturday, September 15, when it went down near McRae's family home.

For those of you who don't know, McRae has worked closely with Codemasters on the popular Colin McRae racing series for several years now. The PS3 version of DiRT hit shelves last week.

The BBC reports: "Rally champion Colin McRae, his five-year-old son, a six-year-old boy and a family friend were killed in a helicopter ...
Sept 13, 2007

Let's start with a moan. What percentage of people actually play their PS3 on one of those High Definition Television things? It's got to be well under half of you. You'd like to think developers would actually test their games on a standard def TV before kicking them out of the door and out onto retail shelves.

So there we were, squinting at the (admittedly lovely looking, when presented on the right technology) Career menu screen, unable to read even the most rudimentary ...
Codemasters is gearing up to unleash its gorgeous-looking rally racer on Sony's gaming beast at the end of the week, and this video features Chief games designer, Matt Horsman showing off the multi-car off road races in the game. Head here for the new screens.

He gives you a look at the cross over, motocross and C.O.R.E events that Xbox 360 owners are already blasting through, considering the game launched on 360 back in June.

Both versions look pretty much identical, although ...

Colin McRae: Dirt (Demo)
Jed Ashforth Interview (Video)
All the Kings Men (Blu-ray Trailer)

If DiRT's early review score of 9/10 from Official Xbox Magazine (U.S.) wasn't any indication, Codemasters is now reporting that week one sales of the game have surpassed 500K copies globally, and the playable demos for the Xbox 360 video game entertainment system from Microsoft and the PC have been downloaded over 500K times worldwide.
Everything you know is wrong. Well, probably not everything, even if you went to a good school. Anyway, Colin McRae has changed: its been totally reinvented, but in a good way. In a really good way.

So out goes the porridge-pale Scot glued in a Subaru and racing where your only rival is the ticking of the clock, and in comes a horde of intelligent drivers, enough cars to jam I-5 and an annoying American commentator so “pumped” that hed probably burst into a shower of Moms apple pie ...
Obviously, as MotorStorm has so brilliantly demonstrated, what people want most from a racer these days is down and dirty mud-splattered action where rival cars do everything in their power - and a little more besides - to make sure they cross the finish line first. Where's the fun in racing on your own through checkpoints against the clock when PS3 can handle multiple cars smashing up scenery and each other in fierce, no-holds barred battles? Racing games need to move with the times to compete ...
Colin McRae: Dirt looks amazing and Codemasters is only too happy to show it off.

This new trailer is just a teaser of what the game will look like and, of course, it's stunning.

Good as it may look, however, it doesn't look like real-time graphics to us, which is a shame because the actual game looks so good that in-game footage would easily have been impressive enough. Just check out our screens through the Images tab, which DO represent in-game visuals.

These new images from Colin McRae: Dirt, Codemasters' reinvented, next-gen vehicle for the off-road racing maestro, show off the game's lush visuals thanks to a newly developed game engine called Neon.

Dirt is the first game to use the engine, which has been created by Codies' own computer bods. Hit the images tab above for more views.

Colin McRae: Dirt drops the series' tight focus on the World Rally Championship, instead taking in a wider array of off-road events, ...
Codemasters' long running Colin McRae rally series will be making its next-gen debut as Colin McRae: Dirt, landing on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2007.

Dirt is the UK developer's most diverse McRae game yet with off-road racing, desert challenges, hill climbs and Rallycross events, while the vehicle line-up includes Dakar-style trucks, super-powered 4x4s and ...
Codemasters has today confirmed that its much loved and hugely successful off-road series is to reappear after its two year pit-stop as a next-gen racer, under the working title of CMR'07.

Currently penciled in for unnamed "next-generation platforms," the British-developed veteran racer will include all manner of enhancements and new modes alongside its traditional high-speed rallying, with the focus on realism and detail.

Along with the international events, official cars and real tracks, ...
