Call of Duty: World at War - multiplayer hands-on

Will the shooter maintain online dominance for another year? Sure as hell looks that way...

Selectable stat boosts, or Perks, were one of the greatest additions we experienced last year. And as far as we can tell, nearly all the stand-bys are back with plenty of new additions to streamline your soldier into the perfect murder machine.

Applied Perks can reduce weapon overheats, increase dexterity, and improve tank/turret performance.  As for the new: Shades shield your eyes from flashbangs, Flak Jacket keeps pesky ‘nade kills to a minimum, and Satchel Charge is... well, BOOM!

And with the aforementioned new weapons comes new methods of protection. Gas Mask protects from the Tabun nerve gas and there’s a Fire Proof Perk to defend you from nature’s cleanser. Our favorite was probably Second Chance. Similar to Last Stand, fallen players can now be revived by similarly equipped teammates to live to fight another day (round.)

One of the biggest complaints about CoD4’s damn near perfect online experience was the limited number of Create A Class slots. Well, guess what? MOAR! We’re getting more custom slots, so you can craft killers in every color of the rainbow without undoing your hard earned ranking. Plus, we’re told you hardcorers will also get more than slots for Prestige mode this go-round.

Treyarch’s also given private party settings a facelift this time. In an example they provided, an Australian can enact his right to Xenophobia and choose only to play with other Aussies. But you see what they’re getting at.

Best of all, CoD:WaW will allow you to make squad lists entirely of your friends. Good for keeping the n00bs at bay, and probably the closest thing to a clan console owners are going to get. Leaderboards are more accommodating as well, now viewable by each and every mode. Hell, you can even instantly pull up a leaderboard that corresponds to whatever lobby you’re in.

You shouldn’t even have to ask about Free-For-All and Deathmatch. They’re not going anywhere. You’re getting plenty of new ways to play competitively, like Team Deathmatch, Hardcore HQ, Multi-Bombe Search and Destroy and best of all, the triumphant return of Capture the Flag.

But that’s just scratching the surface. Our very favoritest mode lies beyond that of the multiplayer. Onward, dear readers...

I'm not entirely sure that this will be my favorite game out there due to it being like COD4 (Which became boring because it was rather easy, so I just play private matches), but it should be good enough for me, since i'm not a big fan of any other game coming out this fall.

@Cwf2008

Who cares if it's World War 2? There are actually more modern games out there then WW2, it's just COD4 was the only "noticeable" modern game because it made even the worst FPS player feel like he's doing good. Don't go with the "I'm tired of the whole Nazi deal" now, many modern FPS's out there favor the "Stop the nukes, stop the terrorists" deal as well

Treyarch is only really being hammered because of COD3, and that's understandable to some extent. The main reason they did so terrible is because they only were given 8 months by Activision because they're a money-hungry company just like EA. The average shooter takes 2 years, which is how many IW and COD4 were given.

I plan on public starring the game online until I get bored of it like most of my buddies, then I'll just go to competitive private matches and Co-op once the public matches get boring and infiltrated by kids who are ridiculously easy to kill.

Nebnamlessac, i'm sure this game will be great to a majority of people, because it's pretty much sounding like a carbon-copy of COD4. Which is good, but to myself i'll just say "Ok." because COD4 got boring when it became easy to me.

I'm sure the flamethrower will be big for the first week or so it's out, until people figure out how hindering it was to have one. In real life, they had semi-small range, if the tank was shot you would go up in flames, and that the tank depleted (but does recharge).

Perks may have some type of problem though, not because i'm the idiot who says juggernaut is for "noobs" (I hate to use that term), but because this game will not just be automatics like COD4 was mostly, but because there will be a majority of Bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles as well. If the bolt-action rifles were all one hit kills WITH stopping power, then I would assume the M1 Garand would be 2 shots with anything, so smart M1 users would use juggernaut. That would be a balancing issue.

I'm happy with the return of silencers because I am one of those guys who like to hide under radar. Not exactly realistic, but who cares that much about realism? My favorite gun will be the MP40, PPSH, or Thompson silenced, with whatever they decide to call UAV jammer since it won't be a UAV, it'll be a recon plane.

All in all, this should be a game I rate 9 or a 9.5 out of 10. Not the greatest game, but I'll be happy with it, just like how I gave COD4 the same rating.

.............um.... Okay, the whole idea of WWII has been so overused, that COD4 was pretty much a breath of fresh air. ............and there were cooler guns.

Now I'm pumped to play this game! I Reserved a copy at Best Buy and got a fabric banner with it that hangs proudly in my locker at school.

Maybe converting back to World War II won't be the death of the series.

The only thing that I really wanted to see in this game was the COD3 style multiplayer. Not the whole concept, but being able to drop in and out of split screen online was cool.
When me and my friends play we used to play four on four on two different systems because thats all we had. with COD4 we couldn't do that...
whew!

Man, this Antista guy is hilarious!! I still remember the part with his mom playing Oblivion and the photo montages of him laughing at the twin towers 9/11 disaster. Keep it up!

I don't know Chris. CoD4 got real old after awhile, and I don't know if I could go back to the same style gameplay. I'll probably stick with Socom for the multiplayer.
