'Almost 1,000,000' Xbox Live users log on to play Call of Duty: Black Ops

Just hours after the clock struck midnight to ring in the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops, the Xbox Live servers lit up like a Christmas tree as nearly one million playerslogged onto the Xbox 360 online game service.

This morning at around 4a.m. Eastern Time, Josh Olin, the community manager for developer Treyarch, tweeted, "Almost 1,000,000 players on Xbox LIVE right now." Assuming Olin's 'intel' is correct, that's a lot of Black Ops. We're also assuming that the early morning surge was mostly due to Black Ops...we suppose some of the online gamerscould have beenjumping into Shadowrun matches or something.

With more Best Buy midnight opening locations than any game before and a continuously growing Call of Duty following, it could be possible to see Black Ops as having the highest-grossing game launch of all time.

The game is also earning notoriety for being the first multi-platform 3D-enabled console game. In addition to adding to the PS3's growing library of 3D games, Xbox 360 owners with a 3D TV and 3D glasses can also receive the same effect on their system. As such, it is also the first third-party console game for any system to incorporate full 3D resolution.

The last Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 2, shattered all entertainment records when it raked in $310 million in its first day, beating out the Avatar movie premiere, Halo 3 launch, or any other opening-day sales in American history. We'll see how well Black Ops does, but that's going to be a tough record to beat.
