Call of Duty 3

Also known as: CoD 3

A superior shooter that takes advantage of some - but not all - of the PS3's capabilities

Throughout Call of Duty 3, you're presented with slightly gimmicky, but still exciting, scripted events. As you're entering a doorway to clear yet another house, you might get ambushed by a disarming Nazi, whom you'll need to pummel up close if you want to proceed. In another scene, you’ll need to place a bomb as an enemy soldier tries to pull you away.

And this is one area where the PS3 edition outshines its 360 comrade. While the mechanics on Microsoft’s console boil down to repetitive button mashing, the PS3 takes advantage of its motion-sensing controller. Here, you’ll physically jerk your controller to the side in an effort to shake off your oppressor or rotate it to construct a demolition part. Despite Call of Duty 3’s extremely linear gameplay, small immersive touches like these add diversity and go a long way towards breaking up the constant tide of screaming Nazis.

Another addition we were pleased to see was a third-person camera for piloting vehicles. In certain sections of the game, you get to hop in a jeep and tool around the French countryside, and the experience is much more fun when you can get a broader overall view of where you're going.
