Where World War Two shooters generally show our boys blowing away the Nazis with very few losses or deaths of major characters, Hell’s Highway isn’t afraid to show Operation Market Garden for what it was: a big balls-up battle that saw nearly half of the Allied combatants lose their lives and the mission become a bloody failure. Yes, you’ll taste success on a regular basis, but as the name implies, it ain’t going to be a pretty journey.
And for once, you’ll actually care who survives and who kicks the bucket, unlike the anonymous or completely interchangeable characters in Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. Brothers in Arms has always been good at creating lifelike soldiers who look, talk and move pretty realistically, and on PS3 this is ramped up several notches with some of the most natural and believable characters we’ve seen. But it’s about more than that; every soldier has a distinctive personality, life story and background which develops throughout the game, so you can bet that as soon as someone starts talking about their family or missus back home, then they’ll be the first to snuff it. The game also explores the relationship between Matt Baker and squad leader Joe Hartsock and how their past experiences shape the campaign in Holland.
