Borderlands is a very entertaining shooter and a rather bland RPG. It rewards dedication with new guns and new things to shoot at, which is all kinds of fun for players who enjoy MMO-style progression. But if its charm and depth hadn’t been abandoned so quickly, it may have been absolutely brilliant.

The folks at Gearbox Software today declared their new game Borderlands the "fastest-selling original property video game launch of 2009." The Xbox 360 version sold through 418,000 units, placing it third on the all-SKU NPD top 10 chart for October. "In spite of launching towards the end of the month and competing against the first full month of sales of the latest Halo sequel [ODST], Borderlands dominated the Xbox 360 for October taking the #1 best seller position for the platform," the company stated.

Gearbox also pointed out that if you combine the total October sales of the game (545,000 units) across its Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC SKUs, the sales data would place Borderlands above Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Wii Fit Plus, which took first and second place, respectively during October.

"Borderlands is really exciting," Neumann told VG247, speaking in an interview published today.

"Everyone here loves the franchise, and it seems like the public is really coming back with praise and love. So yeah, if everything makes sense, Borderlands 2 seems like a no-brainer to me."
Exclusive Games such as Uncharted 2, Forza 3 are currently enjoying great success in all regions. But what had caught my attention when I saw the latest worldwide sales figures from VGchartz.com is the poor sales of the PS3 version of Borderlands.
"Gearbox has made their love of Diablo clear while working on Borderlands. They've straight-up said that they tried their best to copy the loot system, and the game can definitely be described as "Diablo with guns."

After playing through the game, it became obvious that they copied more than just the loot system, as seen in the image above..."

Gearbox Studios isn't opposed to changing the way people exchange loot in the fascinating RPS, Borderlands. The catch is that the crew behind the game will move in whatever direction the community wants to in the future -- not now.

"We were pretty careful there," Gearbox's Mikey Neumann said in a recent interview when asked if trade in the game would be expanded. "We wanted free-for-all looting for now. Then we'll look at what the community really latches on to or wants, and we'll move in that direction."

Neumann hasn't encountered a problem with loot-whoring like some complaining about the free-for-all, simply-drop system have been. If there's a dispute, Neumann says he settles it via duels with a hearty helping of the honor system afterward.

Brad Nicholson writes -

Rumblings on Gearbox Software's official message board recently indicated that there was a significant problem with the PS3 version of the game. Friends weren't able to join other friends for some wicked PSN-fueled cooperative action. But that issue is no more -- it has been crushed by Gearbox Software technical wizardry.

In a statement just released to the press, Gearbox's marketing VP Steve Gibson said the PSN friends list problem has been identified and resolved. He noted that PS3 owners should be able to rock out with their bros starting now without having to download a patch -- this was an invisible fix on the server side.

Word on the street is that Gearbox used little electric demons -- not tech dudes -- to clean and bandage the server's wounds, which can be attributed, perhaps, to Borderlands bangin' sales.

"We hope that no other issues crop up," Gibson said in the statement, "but the success of Borderlands is exceeding our expectations and there are more players at launch than we expected. In any case, we plan to continue support of Borderlands on all platforms in case anything else crops up."

MTV Multiplayer: "Pre-ordering "Borderlands" at GameStop nets you 8 unique guns for use in the game. That's not really news, it's been on their site for weeks now. But I have been getting some questions from readers as to how, exactly, the guns will be integrated into the game experience and what their limitations are, so I reached out to Gearbox to find out.

If you pre-order the game, GameStop will give you a download code which basically unlocks the guns for use when you start up the game. The eight guns are spread out among the game's different weapon types, ranging from pistols to sniper rifles to shotguns and rocket launchers. The above screenshot is one such gun, the Vicious Thunder Sniper Rifle. When you start a new character, all of these guns will be accessible from your inventory right from the get-go, so there's no need to level up to use them.

According to Gearbox, each new character you create will have these guns, and there's no limit to who you give them to. So, theoretically, you could create a bunch of starter characters and dole out the weapons to friends that didn't pre-order the game. Or, and I'm just spit-balling here, you could sell them all at the start of the game for a wad of cash (presuming Gearbox didn't have the foresight to set the pre-order guns' value to zero)."

Old Haven is a ramshackle city setting, while the Crimson Enclave is the high-elevation fortress of the Crimson Lance. ...

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has said that the studio's upcoming action RPG Borderlands will be "less boring" than Fallout 3, in an interview in the latest issue of OXM.

He was talking about Borderlands' action focus, which he thinks will attract an audience who don't have the patience for Bethesda's opus.

"I understand why we do those games [like Fallout 3] but I don't know - do we want that? I think that game could have been much better if it didn't have a single dialogue tree. Honestly. And if it was more action-orientated, and if the shooting was better."

It was a simple enough offer. In a Twitter post yesterday, Neumann wrote, "Today is official Borderlands Pre Order Day. Twitter me a screen of you buying the game and I'll play BLs with you and give you loot." He obviously didn't think very many people would even notice; unfortunately, his plan for some Borderlands fun with a handful of Twitter followers got away from him a bit when Kotaku posted news of his promise.

"I've spent around 5 or 6 hours with the preview build of "Borderlands." The only reason I haven't spent more time is because the preview build ends. You basically stop getting new quests and can't progress into new zones, as everything's locked off. It's for the best, but the fact that I've played through all that content several times over with different classes is a testament to how much I've enjoy myself. It undoubtedly hits that "Diablo" nerve that makes you not want to put the controller down.

Anyway, given the amount of time I've spent with the game, I was curious just how much meat will be in the final version. Speaking with Mikey Neumann, the Creative Director at Gearbox Software, I found out some rather interesting tidbits about just how long you'll be spending on the twisted planet of Pandora."
And who's to 'blame' for the rise in popularity?

"So, a couple of them - without me knowing about it - went back and looked at all the original concept art we'd done for the game and they found there was a lot of character and personality that was cool." said Pitchford.

"Also, we're going to watch and see what happens when the game launches, so we can have our plans affected by what our customers want more of," he told Eurogamer and others during a presentation at gamescom.

2K Games is confident that new action title can hold its own this Q4.

2K BeliEves its new IP Borderlands can "stand shoulder-to-shoulder" with this Christmas' biggest games, which include Call of Duty, Halo and GTA.

The Bioshock publisher told MCV that it hopes Borderlands can become a long-term franchise for the firm, and may even spawn a new genre of shooter.

"Borderlands is an incredibly strong offering for this Christmas," said 2K's UK marketing manager Simon Turner.

We've always had an intrigued eye on Gearbox's RPG-styled blaster, but the recent visual reboot has turned that intrigue into something a little more sexy. Johnny was certainly quite charmed when he last had a look-see, commending Randy Pitchford for his willingness to take risks. Debuting a new IP in such a potentially mould-breaking style is certainly a brave move, and one we'd love to see rewarded.
Add to that an economy that's not in the best shape and anything new and unproven has a few reasons to worry.

"Randy Pitchford, the president and founder of Gearbox, was walking us through the single-player campaign when he was hit by a need to show off a particularly cool gun. Jumping into a debug menu screen, he was able to select a few parameters to find just the sorta gun he was looking for. In this case it was a rocket launcher with the description, "Holy sh*t, it shoots rockets!"

The debug menu was fascinating, though, as it's basically a giant database of all the possible combinations of guns you can have, from sniper rifles with shock damage and a blue scope to uzis with flame effects and a red barrel. For each category the total number of possible guns was listed and, at the top, was the total number of guns that could be created with all the possible combinations.

That number was 3,166,880."
Now, with retail lines being drawn in the holiday-quarter sand, 2K Games has locked down the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 title's exact launch date: October 20 in North America and October 23 in the UK, mainland Europe, Australia, and other territories.
A company representative told us today that it's looking forward to breaking new ground this fall when the "role-playing shooter with strong co-op and split-screen gameplay" is released. The rep also confirmed that the post-apocalyptic action game will launch simultaneously on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Borderlands had been banging around for a while, then disappeared for an awkward period of time before ultimately reemerging - think: butterfly - with a new art style, which freshened up the title and removed it from "Fallout clone" territory. We'll have our E3 impression of the title up soon..."

Borderlands combines the best in first-person action with player customization and vehicular combat to deliver an exciting Role-Playing Shooter experience. The game features a groundbreaking content generation system allowing for near-endless variety in weapons and item drops. Borderlands allows for multiple players to share the same game experience simultaneously online in co-op gameplay. Players can freely join or leave each other's games at anytime, or choose to play in the full single-player mode. These features, along with a rich and deep fiction that touches upon the mysteries buried beneath the surface of a danger-filled planet, combine to form a breakthrough experience that challenges the conventions of modern shooters.
We've been trying to get a handle on the plethora of PlayStation games that will be on display from June 2 through June 4, and it's quite astounding. If you weren't excited about the prospect of new announcements for the PlayStation brand, what if we told you there will be over 75 unique PlayStation games on display - that we know about?! While many are multiplatform titles (though the best still appear to be Sony-exclusive), it is a large increase from last year's showing."

Borderlands is a revolutionary game in that in incorporates, in my opinion, everyone's favorite gaming styles from RPG's, fighting, and first person shooters. This game has a groundbreaking new technology that allows Borderland's incredible layers of game play. Borderlands features a content generation system allowing for near-infinite variety in environments, enemies, missions, weapons, item drops, also vehicle and character customization. The system has a random generator to guarantee a new experience every time. It is said that you will never come across the same weapon twice or have the same experience twice. So for all of you that get used to the maps and try to memorize where the enemies are hiding, this game is not for you. With all of the different types of weapon upgrades, there will be more than half a million weapons available. The physics behind the programming are considered realistic and the rendering, from screenshots viewed and in my opinion, are extremely well done from this type and quality of the game. Rumors have also been spread that there is only one loading screen at the beginning to make available constant game play relating this to Far Cry 2.
This game is made for co-op play and will revolutionize the gaming industry with the random generator. This game has been stalled many times and we are all hoping it is worth the wait. I guess we will just have to drool over the trailers and screenshots awaiting this massive online co-op, 4 players vs., first person shooter that will guarantee a new form of game play.
Behind closed doors Borderlands has gone with a completely new style, once a gritty looking shooter is now going to be sporting an interesting and visually striking cel-shaded style and boy is it looking great!

Borderlands Guide writes: Those active on the forums know that some major stuff has gone down in the past 24 hours. First, came word that Gearbox has broken their long silence on Borderlands and is sharing details in an upcoming issue of PC Gamer.

Second came this image (thanks JohnnyMac). Although there's no confirmation, the general consensus here and on the official Gearbox forums is that it is of Borderlands. I e-mailed Gearbox tonight to hopefully get some info.

The pic looks legit but comes as a shock. It's a radically different style than we've seen before. Previous screenshots depicted a gritty, rugged gameworld. The alleged new one is less realistic and more stylized. Reads a caption on the image: "Looks like a panel from a comic book. It's, in fact, a screenshot."
One would hope that their sci-fi shooter Borderlands is not destined to a grim fate.

Well according to 2K Games reps the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC game is still on the 2009 release window."
The most exciting thing about Borderlands is that its very similar to the ‘80s space western cartoon BraveStarr. In fact, apart from the notable absence of Confederate little people in smocks and sentient, anthropomorphic robot horses, Borderlands is just like it - but with more extreme violence. The second most exciting thing about it is that its a little bit like the ill-fated Firefly TV series as well. With that in mind, let us ...
Dec 19, 2007

Guns: lots and lots of guns. Millions of them, in fact. Thats the banner feature of Borderlands thats going to embarrass all those other first-person shooters. Borderlands is a mix of open desert buggy-driving and fast-paced shooting thats coming in 2008. You and three friends bomb around a ruined landscape in souped-up dune buggies, chased by angry mercenaries while protecting threatened colonies from cracked-rhino-hide aliens - the Kraytt. You do so with this: an epic selection ...
