BioShock

A mesmerizing masterpiece of horror - though not a perfect port

Do we even need to talk about the game's graphics? You've no doubt been drooling over the screenshots and videos for months now. Yes, in addition to having a fantastic story and top-notch gameplay, BioShock is blessed with eye-achingly gorgeous visuals.

Much more impressive is what those graphics are used to create. Rapture is a masterpiece of design, a living and breathing game world that immerses you completely. Water pours from leaking ceilings. Schools of fish swim by the windows. Giant sequoia trees grow on the bottom of the ocean in sealed air tubes. A shimmering undersea volcano provides heat and light. The concept of a submerged society is bizarre, but BioShock sells it. Nails it.

The last question, then: Is it scary? Of course, but not necessarily in the way you're expecting it to be. Mutilated corpses line almost every hallway and screeching freaks occasionally jump out at you from the shadows, but heart-stopping, jump-out-of-your seat moments are actually few and far between. The permeating fear in BioShock is of a psychological variety.

Picture yourself entering an ordinary suburban living room, for instance, and discovering an entire family slumped dead around their flickering TV set. Some games would have the corpses pop up as soon as you got too close, but BioShock allows the quietly disturbing scene to speak for itself. The wife still rests her unmoving head on her deceased husband's shoulder. The children's legs dangle lifelessly, too short to reach the floor. Who are these people? How did they die? The answers your imagination provides are far more frightening than anything a lurching zombie could produce.

Its really a shame that they shipped with glitches even after working on it for so long. That said, everyone needs to play this game. No excuses.

Wow, just coming on the PS3 brings the score down by one point. Ouch.

Why does it seems that PS3 ports are always buggy? Glad to have this game for 360 already.

Something that I would like to add in is that in my opinion, this game is better as a rental than to own. It is an amazing game, for sure, but the fact that it is single-player only means that you simply can't play it forever.

i am so happy, i have played about 2/5 of the way through on glorious 360, now full way on PS3 and later 360, i love this game!

@Cryose:

I completely agree. Everyone does need to play this game, whether it's on 360, PS3 or PC. No one has an excuse to miss out now, but there is only so much replay value in a game that is designed as single-player only. Granted, it does have multiple endings so you can go back and run it a few times, but it certainly doesn't have the staying power of a multiplayer centric game. If you have a three day weekend, go out and rent Bioshock and dive into it. You could probably play through it twice in that time and fully enjoy it.

While I do have this game for 360, I hope to get it for PS3 soon. This is right up there with Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and GTA IV.

I agree and disagree. Becouse the game has no online it means it has even better single player. Take CoD4 for example. Above average campaign and perfect multiplayer. Then this game must have an almost pefect campaign and isn't that worth a few replays?

And why do a few bugs and glitches get this game down from 10 to 9? I'm starting to think you guys on Gamesradar are PC and Xbox fanboys.

When I was playing the game on Xbox 360, around half way through it would turn laggy...Might be my console...but I hope this PS3 version doesnt suffer from lag.

Ironic that i've just read an article on why bioshock 2 isnt a good idea and i shall now quote this article : Please don't let this game become that forgotten, one-of-a-kind masterpiece. We need sequels.

I love how GR contradicts itself :]
