Why oh why would Ubisoft put the sequel to Beyond Good & Evil on hold? Especially following the game's announcement and then the release of its first teaser trailer. This just sounds like a cruel joke.

Remember the sequel to Beyond Good & Evil that even had a trailer posted on the Internet? Well, in an interview with IndustryGamers, North American president of Ubisoft Laurent Detoc said that it's possible it may never be released. After being asked about the risks of a new IP, citing the cast of Assassins Creed, he answered

Yes, that worked out, but it doesn't work out every time, and sometimes you come back to an IP that didn't work because you still think it could have – like Beyond Good and Evil, which was leaked, so now people know we're working on a new one. Whether or not it comes out remains to be seen anyway, but we didn't want to abandon that IP because it has a cache and authenticity about it. There's something very pure about that game and it's too bad that we were not able to build it as an IP at the time.

"I've spent much of today booking meetings for E3, 'cause I'm just that diligent. One such call was to Ubisoft, which has quite a few big games in its hopper, including Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed 2 and Avatar (the Cameron one, not the Air Bender one). Oh, and one other game that we haven't seen much of since Ubidays last year.

Yes, good ol' Beyond Good and Evil 2, a fan favorite that folks are pretty much dying to see. So I asked, innocently enough, whether I could make an appointment to see the game. The answer from the representative at Ubi was, 'We're not doing any BG&E stuff at E3.'"

A video has appeared on YouTube that its uploader is claiming is the first gameplay footage of UbiSoft's Beyond Good and Evil 2. We were alerted to it by Twitter chat, where it was suggested it could be faked footage, but on further inspection - and bearing in mind it's proximity to E3 week - we're inclined to think it might be genuine... what do you think? Expect more on this later ...

GCO:To make a great game you'll need inspiration, and the ideas that come with it. So here's a question, what was the inspiration behind the sequel to Beyond Good & Evil?

When speaking to French gaming website All-Gamers, Beyond Good & Evil creator Michel Ancel candidly revealed the his inspiration for the game's sequel.

"There were a lot of inspirations: the Miyazaki universe, my own inspirations, politics and the media; the theme of September 11 - the CNN show with army messages and the fear climate. And it was a mix from other universes," Ancel told All-Gamers.

Gamezine: Michel Ancel of Ubisoft reveals the philosophy behind Beyond Good and Evil 2, in addition to when the game might release.

The game will feature lots of returning characters, since the team want to retain the spirit of the first game. Despite this, the general presentation will be to a much higher standard. This is because the first game was meant to be more cinematic and they pitched the game as such, but when they got hold of the PlayStation 2's Emotion Engine they found it couldn't live up to their expectations. Therefore, they had to limit their vision.

With the current generation the team can create the game they originally wanted to, so in reality, it might look like a different game, but Beyond Good and Evil 2 is the game they always wanted to make.
No real gameplay was detailed, the announcement consisting of a trailer with Jade and Pey'j, central characters from the original BG&E, sitting stranded on a highway. A release date was also conveniently omitted but it seems the title is well into production as we speak.

"The company is additionally looking for a gameplay programmer but what struck us was the listing for lead animator. The latter is invited to take part in a brand new project."
