But that was 18 years ago (yeah, where's the time gone?) and he's been redrawn over and over again to fit new technology. In fact, unbelievably, Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared on our screens in some 50 guises.

In North America and Europe Sonic Unleashed is exploding on every viable console on the market with a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 version that Japan isn't getting. Sega of Japan plans to release Sonic: World Adventure (renamed to better fit Sonic's journey around the Earth and downplay the Werehog thing?) only on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The PlayStation 2 port will be completed before Sonic: World Adventure launches in Japan so this begs the question why is Sega passing on it? It's not like Sega Japan is abandoning the PlayStation 2 entirely. Thunderforce VI comes out on Thursday in Japan and unless Sega has anything secretly planned it will be the final PlayStation 2 game published by Sega in the region.
Today we're diving into the cringe-worthy missteps Sonic has taken since his inception. Many years ago, while toiling away in the Toys "R" Us salt mines, I was in charge of the electronics department. This included the glut of cheapo PC software the company carries, from seven-year-old games that will never sell to brand new, hardware-crunching titles that no one shopping in that store could ever install. The amount of unsold software was so choking that some ...

It doesn't really matter how long you've been gaming - you know who Sonic the Hedgehog is. Ever since his first appearance on the Sega Genesis in 1991, the hyperactive hedgehog has consistently been one of the most popular characters in video game history. To honor his longevity, SEGA's trumpeting its new, next-gen Sonic the Hedgehog game, due later this year, as well as an enhanced remake of the original Genesis game, only for Game Boy Advance. The new version will incorporate Sonic's spin ...
What was once a great and respectable franchise has now become a dumping ground for half-baked games. Sonic Riders straps the world-famous, sonic-booming hedgehog onto a hoverboard in the hopes of creating a blow-your-hair-back, thrill-a-minute mix of Mario Kart and snowboarding trickster SSX. It's fast all right. And loud, too. But everything else that matters (control, course layout, decent multiplayer ... you name it) comes up dead last.

The various hoverboards, or "Extreme Gear," ...
It's hard to believe it took until March of 2006 for Sega to strap Sonic's feet to a plank and point him downhill. Everyone from Final Fantasy VII's Cloud to Solid Snake have already geared up for some video grinding over the years. It's not exactly skateboarding or snowboarding, but Sonic Riders is close enough. You'll choose one of 16 characters and guide them down a mountain, through a steamy jungle or into a machinated wasteland while busting tricks and staying ahead of the pack. These ...
