About This FAQ ========================================================= While playing Persona 3 I got really sucked into the game and found myself playing it over and over. Near the end of my second playthrough I decided that I would do a FAQ on this game as an excuse to play it some more. Well after some 300 hours of gameplay, here is the FAQ. As a note most of the things here only apply to Persona 3. Numerous changes were made to the Persona 3 in FES so keep that in mind. ****************************** Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 ****************************** In the story of Persona 3, you will step into the shoes of an orphaned boy. Returning to his home city of Port Island he is a transfer student to Gekkoukan High. However before even arriving in the school dorm he begins to see strange things going on, clearly everything is not quite right in this city. Only a few nights after his odd arrival he is attacked by Shadows, amorphous creatures of darkness, and his Persona is awakened. As luck, or fate, would have it all of the students who stay in his dorm are Persona users, regular teens by day but when the Dark Hour comes at midnight they are able to wield their Personas via the use of special handguns, called Evokers. Using this rare power you and your fellow SEES members will learn the secrets to the Dark Hour and the odd tower that appears during this time, Tartarus. Your Persona, the Dark Hour and Tartarus all seem to be linked in some sort of inexplicable manner. Whenever midnight comes in Port Island the moons turns green and normal people are transmogrified into what appear to be giant coffins. Only those with the power of Persona are aware of what goes on during the Dark Hour. Another odd occurance is the appearance of the massive tower Tartarus. This veritable Tower of Babel juts high into the sky of the Dark Hour and seems to be without any end in sight. Only by harnessing the power of your Persona, your second soul, can you hope to survive the dark times to come. ========================================================= 3. The Game ========================================================= 4.1 - The World ========================= Persona 3 takes place on where Port Island and the city of Iwatodai meet. There are a number of places of interest all of which serve some purpose during the course of the game. Some are solely for where you meet people while others will see a fair sight more use. ******************** Gekkoukan High ******************** Outside of School --------------- Minor NPCs to be conversed with. --------------- First Floor --------------- Nurse's Office - Can only speak to the nurse while tired or sick. If you drink his concoction you will have your Courage increased. Refuse to do so and he will restore you to good status. Library - Study here afterschool to increase academics. Faculty Room - Only accessible during set sequences. School Shop - Sells Book Covers and minor HP restore items. Home Economics Room - This is an S. Link room. Music / Arts / Photography Rooms - These are all Fortune S. Link rooms. Laboratory - Only relevant to Elizabeth's requests. Walkway - There is a Persimmon Tree here, relevant to the Old Couple. Athletics Area - These are all Chariot S. Link rooms. Bathroom --------------- Second Floor --------------- Hallways - Bebe, Chihiro and Keisuke can be found outside of Classroom 2-F. Fuuka is found near the bathrooms and Yuko is found near the sinks located by the stairs leading to the room and 1st floor. Classroom 2-E - Fuuka and Natsume's homeroom, non-accessible. Links and is only accessible during the daytime. Donation Box - When you donate with the box there is a chance you will gain a bonus to your Academics rating. There is a very small chance you will get a minor boost when you donate 5 Yen. At 100 there is a moderate chance that you will get a minor boost. When you donate 1,000 Yen there is a moderate chance you will get a moderate boost. Fortune Box - By spending 100 Yen you can draw a fortune that randomly does one of several things: You will either lose 500 or 1,000 Yen, gain 500 or 1,000 Yen or get a good or bad fortune. The bad fortune makes you lose 5,000 Yen and puts you in the "Tired" status while the good one gives you 5,000 Yen, gives you a Lucky Charm item and it sets your status to "Great" regardless of whatever you may have been at before. Inari Sushi box - This is relevant to one of Elizabeths' requests. ******************** Dorm - SEES Home ******************** First Floor --------------- The only thing of note here is the entrance/exit and the save point which looks like a clipboard or register of some sort on the counter near the entrance. The TV will sometimes give you news clips of minor interest. Bathroom - Using this may or may not improve your status. --------------- 2nd Floor --------------- This is the boys dorm area. The only thing of note here is the vending machines which you should get a Blue Bull from. This is needed to start up the Hanged Man S. Link. Sometimes you will find people sitting around near the staircases instead of hanging out in the lobby area. --------------- 3rd Floor --------------- This is the same as the previous floor except that it is the girls dorm area. Sometimes you will find people sitting around near the staircases instead of hanging out in the lobby area. --------------- 4th Floor --------------- This is where the SEES control room is located and where meetings will usually take place in the dorm. Nothing else is here. Bathroom - Using this may or may not improve your status. --------------- 5th Floor / Roof --------------- Other than the initial section of the game there is never anything up here. ========================= 4.2 - The Cast ========================= The world of Persona 3 is populated with a wide variety of people, some who are allies and some who are just acquaintances. However all of them have some part to play in the games narrative and they shape the game itself. =============== The Party =============== Main Character *************** Age: 16 Weapon: Any Tarot: Fool Persona: Orpheus Element: Various ********** This is the silent protagonist typically seen in pretty much every Shin Megami Tensei game. Orphaned in some sort of accident ten years ago he has transferred to Gekkoukan High just recently. Unaware of what is going on he quickly comes across the effects of the Dark Hour and signs an odd contract upon reaching the School Dorm he is to stay in. The protagonist is incredibly strong and talented, having the unique gift to harness the power of multiple Persona. Using this skill he is a major key to the SEES war on the Shadows and Dark Hour. However this quiet young man carries a dark secret within him that could act as the catalyst to events of unimaginable proportions... Unlike the other characters in the game he can use any weapon that he chooses and is rather skilled in weilding them all. Where this skill comes from and why he is so talented with the use of his Persona even after just having awakened into that power are unknown. Note: The Fool arcana is not one people are normally born under. It is one of the most powerful Arcana due to its number being 0. This means that it can end up becoming anything in time. The protagonists ability to switch Persona is likely related to this. ********** Orpheus: In Greek mythology Orpheus was one of the most influential figures of humanity, bringing medicine, writing and agriculture to the peoples. In addition he assisted in making some of the religions more accessible to the everyday peoples who worshipped the gods. He also invented the lyre. Late in his life, after serving with Jason and the Argonauts, his wife Eurydice passed away. Desperate to get her back he braved the underworld and softened the hearts of the god Hades, Lord of the Underworld, and his wife Persephone. They agreed to let his wife return to life with him so long as he walked before her and led her back to the surface world. However he looked back too soon and she was lost to him forever. This shows very clearly that Orpheus is not only linked to death but seems to be able to overcome it, stopped only by his very human inability to blindly believe in something. Another thing to note about the Orpheus persona is his metal body and his not so metal looking head. Orpheus was killed by the Thracian Medeans for the lack of respect he showed to their god, and his original patron, Dionysus late in his life. They tried to kill him with sticks but his music was able to stop the sticks before they struck him. Enraged the Medeans tore his body apart and left his body to float down the Hebrus river. His head was eventually recovered and buried at a shrine. *************** Yukari Takeba *************** Age: 16 Weapon: Bow Tarot: Lovers Persona: Io Element: Wind ********** After losing her father at a young age Yukari has lived a fairly unhappy life. Even her awakening powers as a Persona user don't seem to help her out all that much since she is initially scared of using the Evoker on herself (who can blame her, seriously?). She is something of a repressed girl, keeping most of her worries and fears to herself as she seems to be reluctant to burden others with her anxieties or to even confide in them. It seems that her father was a fairly notorious known in Iwatodai's checkered past. As a member of the Gekkoukan Archery team she is rather skilled in the use of her bow. She is also something of a powerful magic user with a variety of Wind based magics and healing spells to leave her fully rounded. When electric type attacks aren't a danger she is an ideal support type party member. ********** Io: Once again Greek Mythology rears its head. Io was a priestess of Hera who caught the eye of Zeus. She resisted his lustful advances until her father drove her away and she sought out comfort in Zeus' arms. When his wife Hera came to investigate Zeus turned into a cloud and turned Io into a cow. Hera took the cow shaped Io as a gift and set a guardian to watch it, one that Zeus soon had killed by Hermes (Junpei!). When that happened Io was forced to wander the Earth being stung by a gadfly the whole time. Eventually she would be returned to human form and marry the Egyptian king Telegonus. While her life was shaped by the lust of Zeus and she was left burdened with the shape of a cow for many years she eventually found her place in the world. Also take note that the chair that the figure is chained to is that of a cow skull. This is likely meant as a nod to the myth, taking graphical inspiration from the story. Another similarity is that Io's father ended up chasing her into Zeus' arms while Yukari's fathers death chased her mother into the arms of various men, something that shaped Yukaris life. *************** Mitsuru Kirijo *************** Age: 17 Weapon: One-handed Sword Tarot: Empress Persona: Penthesilea Element: Ice ********** Mitsuru is one of the most popular girls in the school; not only is she very beautiful but she is strong-willed, confidant and class president. That is to say nothing about her being the daughter of the president of the Kirijo corporation, the business that owns the island Gekkoukan is built on. She is a strong girl that acts as support for the team until Fuuka is found and makes for a fairly strong rock in the middle of the chaos that is the Dark Hour. Mitsuru seems to have been handling the Dark Hour for numerous years lending to her talent with the sword and her ability to more than handle herself against the Shadows. ********** Penthesilea: Known to have been a warrior queen of the Amazons of Greece, it is hard to see many similarities between her and Mitsuru. Besides the fact that Penthesilea wields two blades, indicating her combat prowess (meanwhile Mitsuru is better with magic than melee...) and, if observed carefully, Penthesila has one breast of her armor with studs on it while the other does not. Amazons supposedly cut off one breast so that it was not in their way when they used their bows. Ultimately Penthesila accidentally killed her sister Hippolyta while hunting deer and sought only to die. To this suicidal mindset she joined up to fight in the Trojan war, dying at Achilles hands. Honestly it almost seems like Penthesila would have been a bitter fit for Yukari in some ways than Mitsuru. If anyone has any extra insight into this let me know and I will post it here. *************** Junpei Iori *************** Age: 16 Weapon: Two-handed swords Tarot: Magician Persona: Hermes Element: Fire ********** Junpei is the class clown, no doubt about it. He is always quick with a smart quip and is very rarely at a loss for words, usually jokes. While he is something of a braggart he is well meaning and attempts to back up his mouth with his sword, especially to defend his friends. However Junpei is not as simple as he may seem at first. Behind his jovial exterior is someone who has problems and doubts of their own and can become quite serious when it is required of him. It is never explicitly stated exactly how Junpei acquired his talent for the sword but he wields it well, if not wildly. From how he uses it you could guess that he played baseball at some time though... He is also fairly skilled with fire and physical attacks with his Persona. ********** Hermes: Known as the Greek god of messengers, travelers and cunning, Hermes was a widely worshipped god. Wearing his winged sandals and travelers hat he brought Zeus' words to the other gods and was one of the only gods with free access to Hades. With a cunning tongue, skilled sword arm and athletic talents he was a god to be reckoned with. Another note is that Hermes was a psychopomp, a guide to the dead. This is a role that had him working with Thanatos and Hypnos, two of the children of Nyx. He is also linked to the story of Orpheus, being the one who took Eurydice from Orpheus after he looked back too early. The link to Orpheus is apparent and puts him at odds with the main characters persona at first glance. Another, less important link, is Hermes wings which attach to his wrists and ankles, in the vein of Hermes winged sandals and Junpei's ever present hat. While minor these are both traits easily linked to Hermes. Anyone who has played Persona knows that Junpei is two things: loyal and a smart-ass, both traits that would definitely apply to Hermes. *************** Akihiko Sanada *************** Age: 17 Weapon: Boxing Gloves Tarot: Emperor Persona: Polydeuces Element: Electric ********** Shaped deeply tragedies in his life, Akihiko is a close friend of Mitsuru and is the only other person to be a member of SEES anywhere near as long as she has. While he may seem somewhat distant and aloof, playing the part of the school star thanks to his talents on the school boxing team, Akihiko is a deep individual with a number of issues to get over thanks to the things that have happened around him. His close friend Shinjiro has become something of a loner and the two have a sort of love-hate relationship going on right now. You could sum up Akihiko in a nutshell: obsessed with becoming a better fighter. Due to his skill with boxing Akihiko fights Shadows with a variety of gloves that he wears on his hands giving him some extra punch to fight with. He also has a number of magical attacks but he excels at the use of status magics, raising his and his party members stats so as to fight better. ********** Polydeuces: Also known as Pollux is the immortal twin brother to Castor, often described as not being immortal (an unexplained situation). The brothers were both members of the famed Argonauts and had sisters whom they loved enough to rush to their rescue. Polydeuces is, in imagery, seen to ride a white horse and killed King Amycus in a boxing match, proving his skill. Not only does Akihikos sister figure into his backstory prominently but he is also an incredibly skilled boxer. In addition Polydeuces is predominantly white to Shinji's all black Castor. I would love to know why they gave Polydeuces those weird arms if he is supposed to be a boxer though... As a note, some literary works attribute the goddess Nemesis with having laid the egg that gave birth to Castor and Polydeuces. This provides a link between these three Persona. *************** Aigis *************** Age: Unknown Weapon: Guns Tarot: Chariot Persona: Palladion Element: Physical ********** Constructed more than ten years ago to act as a weapon to fight the Shadows, Aigis was one of a number of androids given a human personality. This was done so that they too could harness the power of a Persona in their fight. Aigis is the last remaining one of these androids. She awakens and escapes the lab that she is kept in, seeking out the hero and expressing her determination to stand by his side. Aigis seems obsessed with him and it is unexplained why this is... Aigis uses guns built into her body, whether it be replacing her hand or firing from her fingertips. However she lacks any sort of elemental attacks, all of her offensive skills are physical based attacks that take HP. She does gain a number of stat boosting spells but little else. **NOTE: The name Aigis seems to be an older way of referring to what we would refer to as an Aegis. Aegis has entered modern english to mean a shield or protection which comes from the name of the magical shield of Zeus. It was forged by Hephaestus and was an incredibly powerful defensive tool that he, at times, would loan to Athena and, rarely, Apollo. Alternatively, others saw it as the breastplate of Zeus' armor and regarded it as terrible to behold. In either case it is seen as a powerful protective tool, something that Aigis herself is very much one of. Another Aegis that I found was the goatskin breastplate that was given to her by her father Zeus. This definitely fits in with Aigis' name and Persona. Aigis is the shell that houses the Persona that makes fighting the shadow possible. ********** Palladion: While I could find nothing about Palladion historically I have the feeling this is some sort of romanization of the word Palladium. A Palladium is said to be an ancient statue that, so long as it stood where it was no harm could come to the city that it stood guard over. Essentially it was a guardian angel of the city. They were believed to be magical pillars of Earth that were given shape by the Romans due to their need to have it shaped to their beliefs. The most famous of these is the Pallas Athena. This fits Aigis rather well. She is a construct who stands guard of our world against the things that seek to invade it and, due to the magic of her Persona, she is able to do just that. In addition Aigis' Persona looks almost exactly like a part-mechanical, part-mystical version of the Pallas Athena. The link can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PallasGiustiniani.jpg *************** Ken Amada *************** Age: 10 Weapon: Spear Tarot: Justice Persona: Nemesis Element: Light ********** This just goes to show you that even preteens can wield enough magical power to light up a small country. Ken is a third-year student at the local elementary school who spends his summer at the SEES dorm. He too has the potential to use a Persona. He is somewhat quiet and respectful, looking up to the older kids in the dorm, but he also seems to be more mature than Junpei at times. His mother was killed several years ago in an accident and, due to this, he is an orphan. Ken wields spears to compensate for his lack of reach and power. How he knows how to use these things is beyond me, but I'm sure it's an intresting story. He also uses some really powerful Hama and Electric attack spells and he even makes for a fairly adequate healer given time. He is actually rather versatile just really weak in melee. ********** Nemesis: In Greek mythology Nemesis is the goddess of divine retribution. She is an ancient entity, seemingly predating Zeus. Not only divine punishments she is also something of a more personal one, giving people what they deserve in a sense. Essentially she is a goddess of revenge and worshipped in that regard. Some attribute Nyx as being Nemesis' lone mother, having birthed her without a male impregnating her which takes on meaning later on. While Nemesis looks nothing like her Greek incarnation her main link to Ken is that she is a goddess of revenge which really sums up the majority of Kens motivation early in the game. The link to Nyx should not be missed either. It does bear note that Nemesis was not necessarily regarded as evil, more of a goddess of comeuppance. This is much like Ken who isn't necessarily a bad kid, he is simply one who has become singlehandedly absorbed in his goal: revenge. *************** Koromaru *************** Age: Unknown Weapon: Dagger Tarot: Strength Persona: Cerberus Element: Darkness ********** The white dog of the Buddhist priest at the Naganaki shrine, Koromaru was left alone when his master died. However, loyal dog that he is, he continued to stand guard at the shrine and protect it. Exactly what he was protecting it from was uncertain but it is eventually revealed that he has the ability to fight the shadows and summon a Persona. One specially made Evoker later and Koromaru joins as a quite useful member of the team. Rather than attacking with nail and claw Koromaru holds a variety of dagger type weapons in his mouth and attacks with rather acrobatic maneuvers. He is also rather well versed in fire spells but he excels at the use of Mudo spells. ********** Cerberus: As the guard dog of Hades, Cerberus dutifully watched its gates so that only those who were supposed to pass did so. Many greek heroes made their way past him while they were on quests, amongst these are Orpheus and Hermes. While an incredibly vicious animal he only did his duty and nothing more. While Koromaru wasn't so extreme in who he kept in and out he obviously made sure that the Shadows didn't get in. In addition he has links to several of the Greek heroes which most of the main characters Persona are linked to (both the gods and heroes of Greek mythology). *************** Shinjiro Aragaki *************** Age: 18 Weapon: Axe Tarot: Hierophant Persona: Castor Element: None ********** Shinjiro is your stereotypical tough guy with a really bad attitude. He needs nobody else in his life and can take care of himself as far as he is concerned. Shinji can normally be found loitering around the gang hangout at Port Island station and seems to be well respected there. He was one of the initial members of SEES, and a childhood friend of Akihikos, although he left under unknown circumstances. Since then he has refused to get involved with SEES relying only on himself and refusing to help others. All this changes once Ken Amada joins SEES as an active member... A real rough and tumble sort of guy, Shinjiro uses large axes and hammers as his weapon of choice. He lacks any sort of elemental attacks but this is due to the fact that he lacks any weaknesses either. ********** Castor: Him and his twin brother, Polydeuces also know as Pollux, were known as the Dioscuri ("Youths of Zeus"). They were members of the Argonauts, alongside Jason, and were half-immortal. This works out in an interesting way; Pollux was immortal and would reign as a god when he died, living forever amongst the gods of Olympus. Castor was mortal and would die as one, living forever amongst the dead in Hades. The two brothers had several sisters that were of great import to them, going to war to retrieve them. Castor is seen in imagery riding a black horse and was known as a great horseman. Castor seems to be the quieter of the brothers, living in his immortal brothers shadow. Shini seems to be okay with this, choosing not to fight due to his own issues and letting Akihiko do it. The Persona appears as a man fused to some sort of horse thing which fits the mythology. There is another link to the two but that would be spoilerific. *************** Fuuka Yamagishi *************** Age: 16 Weapon: None Tarot: Priestess Persona: Lucia Element: Support ********** A shy, quiet and unassuming girl Fuuka is the sort of girl who allows herself to be picked on. She is frail of build and lacking in self-confidence. She has some rather powerful extra-sensory abilities that enable her to scan the Dark Hour more effectively than Mitsuru ever could. Her power in this area is immense but she is held back by her own insecurities. Known to be a sickly and frail girl she tends to be absent from school quite often. She has some very poor luck and is a target of many of the meaner girls in school, being bullied by them rather often. This has a rather tragic turn to it... Since Fuuka is your support she never actually fights at all. Instead she stays behind during all missions and acts as your battle support. She does gain a few abilities that help you out besides those, such as the ability to heal you a bit when you go between floors. ********** Lucia: St. Lucy, or Lucia as she is known here, is the Christian patron saint of eyes. Lucia lived in Roman territory and was originally bethrothed to a pagan man. When she, rather than marry him, gave her dowry out as alms to the poor he denounced her as a Catholic to the local magistrate. This magistrate, Paschasius, ordered her to burn a sacrifice to the Emperor which she refused. She was ordered to be defiled in a brothel due to this refusal. When the guards came to take her away they found her so filled with the Holy Spirit that she was as heavy as a mountain, too heavy for even a team of Oxen to move. She continued to spout prophecies as they tried this and they stabbed her in the throat with a dagger to stop this. However she still continued to speak and they gouged out her eyes. She was still able to see after this though. The connections between St. Lucy and the Persona Lucia are apparent in her eye and throat wounds. Her stomach seems to be a swollen shield type area, likely a nod to the way she was as heavy as a mountain due to the Holy Spirit filling her. Lucia herself is a prophetess which seems to link up with Fuukas mystical sensing abilities. ========================= NPC's, part 1 ------------------------- Chairman Shuji Ikutsuki - While he is a good natured man has a really poor sense of humor, spouting off really bad jokes all the time. He is the chairman of SEES and has a room on the fourth floor behind the SEES control room. Ikutsuki is rather charming in his own way and is rather helpful in the war on the Shadows. It does seem to be that he knows more than he should... Ikutsuki is one of the few people who retains his human form during the Dark Hour and doesn't wield a Persona. Igor - Anyone who has played previous Persona games will recognize Igor, the proprieter of the Velvet Room. This mysterious man has the power to fuse Persona in a variety of ways but only the main character seems to be aware of him. Igor also seems to be able to get into your dreams to tell your character a variety of information. As an interesting change of pace, the Velvet Room appears to be a giant elevator that is perpetually heading upwards. Elizabeth - Little is known about Elizabeth beyond the fact that she is Igor's assistant in the Velvet Room. She supplies rewards for completing the requests that she asks of you and keeps the Persona compendium. Other than that, little is know about her beyond the fact that she too is a Persona user. Takeharu Kirijo - Mitsuru's father and the head of the Kirijo family, Takeharu is the man behind the SEES fight against the Dark Hour. While he comes off as quiet and uncaring he is haunted by his family's past and the errors that it had made. He seeks to undo them but he cannot do it himself as he is not a Persona user. Takeharu is one of the few who remains human during the Dark Hour but lacks a Persona. Mysterious Boy - Shortly after your arrival in the dorm you will be asked to sign an odd contract by a strange young boy. After this he will begin to appear in your room during the Dark Hour. Who exactly this boy is remains a mystery and while he eventually chooses a name for himself this name, Pharos, only serves to heighten his mystery. * Pharos seems to be a derivation of Pharos Nous which means "Mind on Fire" or "Enlightened Mind". Ryoji Mochizuki - Ryoji joins your school during the early portion of your second year. He is something of a playboy who flirts with all of the girls in school but Aigis doesn't seem to trust him for some reason. Junpei however takes a liking to him rather quickly and the two become good friends. He claims to have been living abroad and recently returned to Japan with his parents but he holds within him a dark secret that could destroy the world... Eiichiro Takeba - Yukari's father. This poor man was seemingly killed ten years ago due to public outcry for his part in an accident that blew up a portion of the school that stood where Gekkoukan High now does. Exacty what happened that day is still unknown. Ms. Toriumi - Homeroom teacher to class 2-F Ms. Toriumi is a fairly laid back sort of teacher. She doesn't really put the most effort into teaching and seems to have more concern about getting into trouble than she does actually making her class actually behave. Ms. Toriumi doesn't get along well with Mr. Ekoda but then again neither do most teachers. She too has a secret although hers is far less sinister. Officer Kurosawa - A local policeman who knows about the SEES. As a normal human he doesn't fully understand but he knows just enough to be willing to sell equipment to the teenage fighters in SEES. During the night he goes out on patrol which means you cannot buy items during that time. ------------------------- SPOILER ALERT!! ------------------------- Strega ------------------------- Three humans capable of being awake during the Dark Hour, Strega run a Revenge Request website. Hire them and they will hurt, or kill, anyone that you pay them to go after. However they are not the simple criminals they appear to be at first glance. In actuality they are Persona users. While they are at first content to simply watch SEES hunt down the greater Shadows once they realize what SEES is trying to accomplish they set themselves up to stop them. Borderline insane and totally amoral they seek only to ensure that their power is untouched. As sad as it may seem they are not totally unsympathetic characters. Once one finds out their motivations then their outlook begins to make a fair bit more sense. They are almost pitiable in their outlook. **************** Chidori **************** Age: 20's Weapon: Hand Axe Tarot: Hanged Man Persona: Medea Element: Fire ********** Not much is known about Chidori before the game begins. She dresses in white clothing in a style known as 'gothic lolita'. Quiet and witdrawn she doesn't seem to have any interest in talking to anyone who isn't a member of Strega. During the course of the game she comes across Junpei and the two of them start talking. Over time they begin to form a friendship that grows into something more, beginning to break through Chidori's shell. The changes that this has upon her personality are totally unexpected, especially by her. Somehow or another she has the innate ability to heal from wounds naturally. She takes advantage of this by cutting herself and using that as a way to help her feel more alive. **************** Medea - In Greek mythology Medea was a priestess of Hecate and a daughter of the King of Colchis, later wife of Jason. Known to be a priestess and having something of a talent for precognition. She seems to have been something of a sorceress, this is only made more likely due to her being a niece to the famous witch Circe. Tragically Jason abandoned her after he was convinced to marry the daughter of King Creon of Corinth. In a rage Medea murdered Creon, his daughter and her children she had with Jason. She did this due to her distress and precarious mental state seeking to spite Jason with the death of his two children. Her time after this was only more tragic. After traveling to Athens she met Heracles (Hercules) and stayed with him for a time until she was chased off. She then married Aegus in Thebes but was chased out after conspiring to kill his first son Theseus after he returned. It is hard to really see many comparisons with Medea and Chidori besides their frail mental states. They are both mentally disturbed individuals with fairly tragic stories to their lives. Both of them find their lives shaped and warped by the men around them and they resort to violence to help themselves feel better, Medea by harming her children and Chidori by hurting herself. **************** Jin **************** Age: 20's Weapon: Grenades Tarot: Hermit Persona: Moros Element: Fire ********** Something of a genius with computers and electronics, Jin is the brains behind the Revenge Request website. He seems to have some sort of a reputation amongst those who pay attention to such things online. While he was initially something of a lost soul due to what Kirijo had done to him he was shown how to live his life by Takaya, this has made him fiercely loyal to Takaya and he will do whatever he can to ensure that his friend is safe. This can easily be seen with how ready he is to take an attack meant for Takaya and how unswervingly loyal he is to him. **************** Hypnos - The personification of sleep, Hypnos is twin brother to Thanatos and child of Nyx. He was known to lair in a dark cave where no sunlight entered and the river Lethe supposedly flowed through it. His on Morpheus was his chief minister and he prevented noises from rousing his father. While he was known as the god of sleep he had little to do with dreams, those were the purview of his three children. He did enter dreams at the bidding of the Olympians such as sending humans dreams of inspiration or foolishness. While you can see little comparison between the two initially, when you realize that Hypnos was the lord of the realm of the imagination it makes a bit more sense. These days the internet is almost like a second home to the minds of most humans, while their bodies stay at home they cast about the internet and explore a variety of things, pretending to be something they're not. It's very much like another realm of sleep. With Jin's online reputation and his ability to sway the masses to his side via the net he is that realms Hypnos. **************** Takaya **************** Age: 20's Weapon: Revolver Tarot: Fortune Persona: Hypnos Element: Almighty ********** Even moreso than the other members of Strega, Takaya is the most ruthless and amoral member of the group. He cares little for other people, lives only for the moment and thinks little of anything beyond that. He has an emaciated appearance and seems to have something of a Jesus complex going on with how he looks, especially that little crown of thorns looking thing. Weilding a pistol he is the only Persona user who can summon his Persona without an Evoker. By simply grabbing his head he calls out Moros to fight for him. Whether this is a sign of his power or if there is something else at play is unknown. **************** Moros - Meaning destiny, fate or doom, Moros is the personification of impending doom. This is something that drives every being towards their fated doom as decreed by The Fates. He is even more powerful than Zeus as even the greatest god of Olympus can't defeat his fate. He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent and is a son of Erebus and Nyx. The Moirae are his sisters and they serve as his agents. You will have to advance far into the story for this Persona to make much sense of it. Takaya acts as the agent of Nyx's impending coming to the world and has been crafting a cult to help accept Nyx unto the world. Due to his outlook on life he believes that the world should b ebrought to an end, thus he not only accepts Nyx as coming but he openly welcomes her. ------------------------- Persona Evolutions ------------------------- At a set point in the game some of the Persona will evolve into newer shapes, changed by events in their lives. These are dramatic events and will be lightly touched upon in this section. However none of these Persona really fit with the characters as well as their initial one does. They are seemingly meant to be more of an evolution of their initial Persona than anything else. **************** Yukari - After finding out the truth about her father, her Persona will change. She will transform from the bull Io into the goddess Isis, a powerful female deity and mother goddess. Isis - The main female goddess of the Egyptian pantheon she is the sister-wife of Osiris, once the main god of Egypt. She is a mother goddess and protecter of the dead. More than most other female goddesses, she was incredibly loyal to her husband Osiris even after he died, going so far as to piece him back together as best she could, whereupon he became lord of the dead. Isis was also the mother of Horus, he who became the new leader of the Egyptian pantheon. She is the mistress of elements, master of all things spiritual and queen of the shining heavens. The appearance of Isis is bizarre to say the least. However the whole guardian aspect, protecting those who you care about, is definitely strong in Yukari. She also holds onto the memory of her lost loved one, refusing to let her fathers memory be tainted for her. In addition her magical leanings make her an incredible healer with the ability to heal any wounds and revive the dead, this is something Isis herself excelled in. **************** Mitsuru - When she faces personal tragedy, Yukari helps her overcome her grief and she manages to find more reason than ever before to fight. Along with this, her Persona evolves from Penthelesia, the amazon warrior queen, to Artemisia, the warlord. From Penthelesia to Artemisia: After the death of her husband, both of the women who were so named Artemisia had great shifts happen in their lives. The first was wife and successor of Lygdamis who acted as an ally of Xerxes, the Persian ruler. She was an advisor to him and suggested he not battle the Greeks at sea. When faced with capture or death during the sea battle she ran away by plowing her ship through one of her own ships and sinking it, thus sealing an escape route. The second Artemisia was so distraught by her husband passing that she drank some of his ashes with her daily drink and lasted two years doing this. Both of these women were changed by the deaths of their husbands, the first for the better in a way, for the worse with the second. This parallels how Mitsuru was forced to change after the death of her father. She works for a company with a dark, shadowed history and must make hard choices to see it prosper, much like Artemisia I had to do. **************** Junpei - After losing someone who has become surprisingly important to himself Junpei gains enough resolve to change who he is. His Persona Hermes, the god of messengers and magic, into Trismigestus, the god of astrology and spirits. From Hermes to Trismigestus: Hermes Trismigestus is a combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. They were both gods of writing and magic and whhen the Greek god of communication was combined with the Egyptian god of wisdom, we end up with Trismigestus. His powers also leaned into the category of dealing with spirits, animating statues as well as alchemy. His "writings" were used later to found the hermetic beliefs in alchemy in the middle ages. Much like Hermes combined with Thoth to create Trismigestus Junpei combines with Chidori in a way to create his empowered Persona. She even passes her healing abilities on to him. This joining of the Sorceress and the Magician, paired with Junpei's resolve, bring about this evolution. **************** Akihiko - When he loses the man who is akin to his brother he finally gains enough resolve to change how he approaches life. His Persona Polydeuces the boxer goes from being half an entity of sorts to Caesar, the Imperial. From Polydeuces to Caesar: After his assassination at the hands of the Roman senate, Julius Caesar was named a divine being and his name made into a title that later Emperors bore. Known to be one of the greatest military strategists to have ever lived (joining the likes of Sun Tzu and Genghis Khan) he was able garner the admiration and devotion amongst his troops and as such had some of the most disciplined troops ever seen. Caesar's skill, and political acumen, led him to great things only to be murdered by what was once a friend. His legacy was continued by his adopted son, Augustus Caesar who would become the first emperor of the Roman Empire. He too was skilled in the arts of both war and politics, although not as great a leader as Julius Caesar was. What exactly led them to have the Greek Polydeuces become a Roman emperor, I have no idea. Polydeuces was a great warrior who eventually ascended to become a god upon his dead much like Caesar. His appearance seems to be a mix of the colors of Castor and Polydeuces blended together. As "ruler of the world" as Augustus was known, that explains the globe of Earth he carries in his hand. **************** Aigis - As the story progresses Aigis slowly begins to act less and less like a robot and almost more like a person. Even her speech patterns change. The major climax to all of this is Palladion, the guardian, changing into Athena, the goddess of wisdom. From Palladion to Athena: Known as a goddess of wisdom and strategy, Athena was a war goddess of a sort. However, unlike Ares, she preferred tactics and skill over brute force She was a patron goddess of many cities, notably Sparta and, of course, Athens. Almost more than any of the other gods she was an aide to mortals having helped a number of heroes to overcome the obstacles before them on their quests. Never having taken a consort or lover she was a virgin goddess and a symbol of sexual modesty. While I think we can all see the virgin aspect clearly, seeing as how Aigis is just a machine, this seems to have been a simple extension of her previous Persona. Palladion was initially a representation of Athena who was seen to be a guardian of the city. To this end, Aigis' persona has evolved from an idol of stone (or metal in the case of Palladion) to the goddess herself. While she may be transcending her initial nature she is still a guardian and a creature of strategic warfare. **************** Ken - It takes some time but after the death of a member of SEEs Ken finally overcomes his anger and desire for revenge. Accompanying this change is his Persona changing from Nemesis, the avenger, the Kala-Nemi, the wheel of time. From Nemesis to Kala-Nemi: It is hard to find much about him but I have traced this back to two different entities: Kala-Nemi, a trickster demon in Hindi lore, and a ancient spirit of the wheel of time, KalaNemi. It encircled the world with its tail in its mouth and kept the proper order of the seasons, sabbaths and festivals. It seems that Vedic priests may have demonized the wheel of time into the demon spirit. Regardless of that I can find little that this has to do with Ken, except for the "Nemi" part of the name. The Persona design seems to try to incorporate the wheel of time aspect in all of Kala-Nemis spherical, and moving, parts on his shoulders. Other than that I see little in common besides the fact that Kala- Nemi and Nemesis are both ancient spirits. **************** Fuuka - More than any of the others Fuuka has a number of personal issues to overcome before her Persona evolves. When she becomes more sure of herself her Persona changes from Lucia, the Saint, into Juno, the queen of the gods. From Lucia to Juno: Known as Hera to the Greeks, Juno was an ancient diety who has a very powerful mother goddess aspect. She was known to be a goddess of birth and midwifery who was also indentified as the queen of the gods, along with Juno. She is something of a mix between the original Juno, who was regarded as a Maiden Goddess, and Hera, the Greek queen of the gods. She was also regarded as protector of the Roman finances (As Juno Moneta "Juno who warns" or "Juno the Alone"), she was also the bringer of light and the matron of honor who had some cruel and savage aspects. Whereas Lucia simply serves to provide Fuuka with a variety of sensory based powers, with the exception of Healing Wave, Juno provides a number of abilities to Fuuka. The major link between the two seems to be that Juno, as queen of the gods and "She who warns", has the ability to see things that others wouldn't neccessarily see. In addition, her mother aspect definitely synchs up with Fuuka and her caregiver nature. There may be other aspects to her that my research didn't find but this is what I have. **************** **SPOILERS AHOY!!!** **************** Main Character - Early on in the game you will see the main characters Orpheus Persona get torn apart as Thanatos emerges from within it. This carries a lot of symbolism in it. You could say that Thanatos is the eventual evolution of Orpheus, however there is a final step to this. It culminates with Messiah, he whom is destined to save the world from itself. From Orpheus to Thanatos: Thanatos is personification of death and mortality. He is one of the sons of Nyx and twin brother to Hypnos. Many saw him as a harbinger of peaceful death, bringing the eternal sleep of death to the world while more violent gods were responsible for harsher death. Seen as merciless and indiscriminate, he is hated by all and hates them in return, all too happy to bring mortals to their fated end. While he was known to be wise as he is not all knowing and can be outwitted. Lastly he was known as a Guide to the Dead, something that Hermes as a Psychopomp sometimes took over for. The similarities between Thanatos and the Persona with his name are prevalent especially once you realize his relation to Ryoji and Pharos. When he was first born as the Appriser of Nyx he was a heartless individual who existed only to bring Nyx to the humans. His taint at the hands of humanity led him to offer them a peaceful death. However, as evidenced by the "true" ending he is not right, Nyx can be stopped as evidenced by the humans. From Thantos to Messiah: Messiah is less of an individual and more of a term given to any great saviour figure in a religion or society. In Judaism the word for messiah translates into anointed one. As such there can be many messiahs in any generation. To Christians he was the foretold figure who would absolve humanity from their sins and to show man how God expects them to live properly. Muslims believe that Jesus is alive in heaven and will return as a messiah to defeat the Antichrist on Earth. While no religion really agrees on exactly who the messiah is, that fact is mostly unimportant in the greater scope of things. In the end, the Messiah is the figure who will save humanity from its enemies. While the Main character harbors the Death tarot within himself, literally bringing forth the incarnation of death to the world, he is also of the Fool tarot. This tarot carries within it the possibility for change. By combining Orpheus, the main characters native Persona, with Thanatos, the incarnation of Death that lay within him, you bring the savior into being: Messiah. Bringing forth incredible power he, with you as his wielder, can stop the coming of Nyx and save humanity from its greatest enemy: Itself. **************** ------------------------- END SPOILER ALERT!! ------------------------- ========================= 4.3 - Glossary of Terms ========================= Listed below are a number of terms and acronyms that you will see throughout the walkthrough and on messageboards. This is essentially a primer to help you get used to the game and the terms that come with it. -------------- Commu Rank -------------- As you increase your S. Links this will get turned into Commu in the Velvet Room. I think this is supposed to be short for Communication Unit, at least that is what the acronym usually means. This is what provides your Fusions with the bonus Experience that levels them up. When you see Commu mentioned anywhere this is what it means. -------------- Dark Hour -------------- The Dark Hour only exists on Iwatodai island, the island that Gekkoukan High is on, and the neighboring Port Island. It is a hidden time that exists between one day and the next, an invisible hour that exists between 12 am and 12:01 am each day. When the Dark Hour arrives all clocks stop ticking, electronics stop working and time essentially stands still. During this time all humans are transmogrified into coffins, unable to see or experience the Dark Hour. Whether this is a defense mechanism against the Dark Hour or simply an after effect of it is unknown. The Dark Hour belongs to the Shadows and those rare few humans who can experience the Dark Hour, most of those being Persona users. -------------- Kirijo Group -------------- The Kirijo Group is an offshoot of a bigger company. They broke away from their parent and have moved off on their own. Headed by Mitsuru's father, Takeharu, they actually own the island that Gekkoukan High School is built upon. It was once the site of a horrible accident that cost the lives of many children in the school as well as all those working on a special project under Mitsuru's grandfather, then head of Kirijo. -------------- Persona -------------- Your Persona is essentially your second self, the other you. It is imbued with magical power and able to fight back against the Shadows that inhabit the Dark Hour. What sort of Persona that awakens within you is determined by your birth tarot and your personality. Your Persona can sometimes act on its own and seems to be able to communicate with its owner. In Persona 3 you only have access to the powers of your Persona during the Dark Hour which definitely implies a number of connections between it and the Shadows. It is also possible for your Persona to be artifically awakened although these forced Persona are hard to keep control of and must be restrained through medication. However these meds carry with them their own side effects. -------------- The Reaper -------------- This nigh unstoppable shadow patrols Tartarus from the floors 35 and up. When he has started to arrive your support character will warn you that they sense Death. Shortly thereafter he will spawn into the level from one of three places at random: Where you spawned into the floor, the stairs up or the access point. Getting into a fight with him before you are at least level 80 is complete and utter suicide so don't do it. Run for the nearest escape route or use a Traesto gem to get the hell out of there. -------------- SEES -------------- The Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad is the name of the group that the main character quickly finds himself leading. All of the squad members are Persona users who have agreed to fight the Shadows. Technically they are led by Chairman Ikutsuki but he is more general support from the sidelines, almost like a manager, while your character is the actual leader. -------------- Shadows -------------- Existing only during the Dark Hour exactly what Shadows are is never explained. Most of them have shadowy black bodies with a mask of some sort on them. They are hostile towards humanity and they have some sort of attraction and hostility with them at the same time. However as the game goes on you are given some hints as to what exactly the Shadows are. I'll not go into that here to avoid spoilers but it will likely be mentioned during the walkthrough. -------------- SP -------------- "Spirit Points" are the main currency for your spellcasting. Whenever you go to cast a spell the amount of "SP" indicated will docked from your characters total amount of Spirit Points. These will go up whenever your level increases and you can regain your SP via the use of certain items, namely Snuff Souls. -------------- Strega -------------- Three strange people who head a "Revenge Request" website. When first seen they display what is apparently the power to pull people out of their transmogrified coffins during the Dark Hour. More so than anything else they are incredibly eccentric and their actions are quite hard to understand at first glance. The word "Strega" is the name for the female practicioners of Stregheria, which is an archaic Italian word meaning "witchcraft". They villified Jesus of Nazareth as an evil prophet and replace him with their own founder as their own version of the messiah. This seems to be due to Jesus being the source of Christianity and how they viewed the church as enemies during their time. -------------- Tartarus -------------- A dark twisted tower with a form that is nearly impossible to describe, this is the home of the Shadows. Appearing only during the Dark Hour, and as such it only exists for an hour each day, this monument is a testament to the twisting corrupting nature of the Dark Hour. This monolithic structure reaches towards the sky like twisted fingers and its top is impossible to truly guess. This is where you will do your fighting and leveling up as well as housing another entrance to the Dark Hour. ========================================================= 5. Basics of Battle ========================================================= 5.1. Combat ========================= Initiating a Fight =============== The only thing random in Persona 3 are the floors to Tartarus that you will end up exploring. The enemies can be seen moving around the floors as giant shadow masses that crawl around the floor. There are three different basic types of Shadows that you can come across: Black Shadows: The black shadow will always be the run of the mill enemies that you are fighting on the floors in the current block. There will be a variety of different types of enemies that the black shadow can contain due to this so it is very important that you are always ready for whatever may come. Purple Shadows: While not always too hard these guys are usually bad news. They are the powerful shadows of the current floor block you are on and they are usually far stronger than the other enemies you will encounter. You should try to come into these fights on full health and always be ready for a tough time until you know how to handle them best. Usually after you pass the block that they were purple shadows on these enemies will become common black shadows. Gold Shadows: These are the rare enemies and they are always worth fighting. These enemies will look like giant hands that have rich sounding names (Wealth, Opulent, etc). If they should see you coming then, rather than attacking, they will run away. Once they are in the fight with you then there is a chance that they will try to run away from you every round. Try to kill them as fast as possible using physical attacks only. If you kill them you will get an item that you can sell for a lot of money. Sometimes they will also carry items you need for Elizabeths requests. The size of the shadow indicates not how powerful it is but how many enemies are contained in that one fight. So the smaller shadows might lead you to think that the fight will be simple and then you fight one giant enemy that pounds you like a drum. To get the drop on the enemy what you will wish to do is sneak up behind them and attack them with the X button. Exactly how close you need to be depends on your weapon of choice; gauntlets can be prohibitive to use with how close you need to be while spears and bows make your life easier. If you can catch them by total surprise then you will have "Player Advantage" during the fight, which gives you one round to attack them without them responding. Should you fail and they catch you first them they get that one round to beat on you instead. This is not good and can kill you prematurely if they all target you with attacks. =============== Tactics =============== When you are in Tartarus pressing the square button brings up the Tactics menu. There are a few options while you are here. Group: From here you have the options to split up or regroup. When you tell them to split up, they will all attempt to run off in different directions. What they do while split up depends on what actions you have them set up. If they find treasure they will snatch it up and give it to you when they regroup or you go up another floor. Should they find the staircase up or an access point they will ask if you want to use it. If you tell them no then they will continue to explore the floor and if you tell them yes and you are whisked away to the appropriate destination. The regroup command tells them to do exactly that. Priority: This sets your partys basic actions while in Tartarus. This depends on if they are with you or not, changing them. If you tell them to "Explore" they will stay by your side at all times when together and when they are going solo they will actively attempt to avoid getting into fights, going around enemies. If they are told to "Defeat Shadows" then they will attack everything that moves. When they are with you they will stay by your side until an enemy nears and then they will charge the enemy as a group. If by themselves they will go after any enemies that they come across, usually getting into fights solo. As a word of caution if people are in a fight and you try to go up a floor then they will be left behind. Proper use of these can make exploration a breeze and help you level up your party members by allowing them to fight solo. Much later in the game a new command will open up that allows you to teleport back to the Tartarus entrance. You will be informed when you get this one and, while useful, it comes too late in the game to really matter. =============== Fighting =============== Below are a few general notes on the combat in Persona 3. You may find them helpful when you are initially getting used to the game. Always be mindful of the square and triangle buttons. Square acts as a shortcut to the Wait command and should be used only when necessary. Triangle activates the Rush command and this should only be used when you mean to. When Rushing your party will automatically attack a target using only physical attacks. While this can be nice to stop dopes like Aigis and Junpei from using all their HP up on physical spells it also stops you from taking advantage of your magic spells and hitting enemy weaknesses. If the enemy is too strong, or the party starts missing too often, you could easily find yourself dead. Use this command with caution. =============== Support Menu =============== The support menu appears when you choose it from the command ring in combat. To reach it you must select tactics and then the name of your support character from the tactics screen. * Analyze: You can shortcut to this by hitting the L1 button. When this command is used you will be given the choice of examining an enemy. Once the support character finishes Analyzing the enemies you will get an update on the enemies average HP and SP as well as what they are weak and strong to resistance wise. Once you have successfully analyzed an enemy you will then be able to look at their strengths and weaknesses whenever you like without the need to actually wait for another Analyzing. NOTE: When you are analyzing someone if they die before it completes you will get nothing. However if you are examining three Cowardly Maya and the one that you picked dies so long as a single Maya remains when she finishes, the Analyze will go through successfully. So essentially you target a type of Shadow to examine, not an individual. NOTE: When Mitsuru is replaced as support, the command becomes Full Analyze. Once it becomes this then you will also be able to see what attacks the enemy you analyzed has at their disposal. TIP: Fuuka does more than just analyze enemies. She can tell you when they have status boosts going on or if the enemy has a barrier that will reflects your magic or physical attacks back at you. Pay attention to this. * Call Support: More often than not this option will be greyed out and totally unselectable. It is only available when you are missing one or more party members due to your party being split up, be it due to the tactical command to do so or because they got caught up on the environment. Should you be missing party members then this will call them to you. Normally they arrive within two or three actions during the current turn but they will appear during the next turn at the latest. * Oracle: This ability is far too random for it to be useless but you may find it interesting in the least. When used Fuuka will, after a short delay, cause a magical effect to rain down from above. It can have a variety of effects that range from restoring your entire partys' HP and SP back to max, knocking all of your members HP and SP down to 1 or even healing your enemies. It's incredibly frustrating to have it heal up your enemys' group entirely. =============== Shuffle Swap =============== The Shuffle Swap is what will occur after certain battles. Between two to six cards will be before you and then they will shuffle around in front of you. You will normally have three or four, the others are a bit rarer. There are five different types of cards you can get in a shuffle as well as three different types of shuffles that can come up. The cards themselves will be rated from one to ten (except for Persona cards) and the higher the rating, the better the payout from the card will be. A six point Money card will give you significantly more than the four point card. *************** Card Types *************** Persona cards - These gold trimmed cards contain a variety of different Persona that you can collect. Any Persona you get this way are the basic Persona types and they will have only their initial abilities. It is far better to fuse them if its a Persona you plan to use, otherwise the Shuffle is a good place to pick them up for free. Weapon cards - Depending on how high the cards rating is the better the weapon that you will get. The weapons can be for any character although you will not get weapons until the characters have joined your party. So no spears until you have Ken and no axes until you have Shinji. While a nice way to get some more weapons you will find better weapons in the chests on the floors (especially in the gold ones) and you can't really sell them while in Tartarus so you are best off getting the money cards. Money cards - Depending on the cads rating it will change how much money that you get from it. As you might guess the higher the rating the more money you can get from it. Wand cards - The wand can provide one of two bonuses, both enhanced by the greater card ratings. The first, more common gift, is a bonus to the amount of experience that you gain. This is incredibly useful, especially after you take out stronger enemies. The second bonus is a permanent boost to one of your equipped Persona's stats. Cup cards - The cup serves one, minor, purpose: to heal your party. The amount of health you heal depends on the card rating but it isn't really anything all that spectacular in any case. If you really need it you are best off returning to the bottom floor of Tartarus and fully healing up. *************** Shuffle Types *************** Regular Shuffle - This is your average, run of the mill, card shuffle. Cards will be moved at a random speed all over the screen. It might be hard but if you focus on the card you want there is little else to this shuffle. It gets harder when they start to pair it up with the later shuffle tricks. Offscreen Shuffle - And here is where the shuffles start to get a bit on the tricky side. The cards will be pulled off the screen one at a time, although sometimes it will be done rather fast, and then dropped back down one at a time. They will fall down in the exact same order that they were pulled off the screen on. It can be hard to keep track of what order they rise and fall in but it should eventually get a bit easier to you since this is going to be getting done to you a fair amount. Collapse Shuffle - This is the hardest shuffle to get used to since it is so liberally paired with the other two shuffle methods. Between two to five of the cards will be folded together. They will then be shuffled around via one of the above methods before being pulled out. The trick here is that all of the cards will come out of the collapse in the exact same order they went in no matter how much shuffling occurs. For example if the following cards go into it in this order: 5 Gold, 6 experience, 5 Cup collapse into each other, when the shuffle ends they will come out 5 Gold, 6 experience, 5 Cup. As long as you keep your eyes on the cards and remember their placement you should eventually get used to this shuffle. --------------- Special Shuffles --------------- Sometimes while shuffling there are a few rare things that will come up. These are listed in this section. Skull Cards - Sometimes one of the above card types will have a skill face on it. This usually doesn't come up until you have been on the floor for awhile but once it does, it spells trouble. Should you get this card then you will get whatever was shown on it (7 gold gives you money, etc) but you also call the Reaper to you sooner (see Glossary for info on the Reaper). When you do this then the Reaper will usually appear immediately but if he doesn't then you only have a few moments before he does appear. Head for an exit immediately or use a Traesto gem and get out of there. ---------- Double Up - Sometimes when you get a card in the Shuffle Swap game you will be given the option to double up. When this happens you can choose to do it or not essentially choosing whether to double down or not. If you do choose to do this then you will get another shuffle but there will be one or more cards that look like broken glass. If you get this card then you will lose not only the chance to get a card this shuffle but the card you got previously. Its a risk but it can be worth it. Most of the time these second shuffles will be three or four Persona with a broken glass but sometimes, rarely, it will have things like experience or yen for you to get. Triple Up - Even more rarely you will get the chance to do a double up more than just the once. They are essentially the same as a double up but you can gain yet more and lose yet more so be careful with this. ---------- Last Chance - When you grab the Skull card there is a small chance that you will be given a Last Chance. This gives you the option to redo the shuffle if you didn't actually intend to get the skull card. Select the option to redo the shuffle and they actually just flat out redo the entire shuffle. If you want to keep the card simply refuse to do the Last Chance and accept the consequences. Tip: Run away! =============== Fatigue =============== By default everyone will be at the "Good" status. However being in Tartarus is very draining on your physical health and it can make you really tired really fast. However there are a number of things about Fatigue that must be known to fully get a handle on it. As you go up in levels the time you can spend in Tartarus will increase but early in the game you will get tired very quickly. This can be frustrating but it is incredibly important that you leave when you are tired. It is easy to recover from being tired simply by either sleeping in class or going to bed early. However it is much harder to recover from being sick, so try not to let it get to that point. Great - When you are in Great condition there are no real physical benefit to it. However this status keeps you one step ahead of getting tired or sick, so that alone makes it incredibly desireable. To achieve this status you must get some extra sleep whether it be in class or avoiding Tartarus for a few days. If you use the bathroom when you are Good then there is the chance you will move to Great status. The Naganaki fortune box can bring you to this status. Good - This is the default health status. You will be in good health most of the time. If you are Tired or Sick then going to the bathroom will sometimes bring you up to Good health, or simply rest. Your party members need to have at least good status to be of any use in Tartarus. Tired - Being tired is a serious pain in the ass. Not only does it mean that being in Tartarus is no longer a good idea you miss physical attacks more often and you are more easily hit with criticals. If your party members ever reach the tired status the next time you go back to the 1st floor they will complain about it and head back to the Dorm. Once someone is tired it is imperative that you get them out of there without getting into extra fights or they might end up getting sick. However if you aren't going to be getting into fights or going to Tartarus then it doesn't matter if you are tired, so don't worry about it. NOTE: Even if they aren't tired, if they are unconscious when you go back to the first floor they will return to the Dorm. NOTE: Also while tired or sick you can gain an increase to your courage by going and seeing the school nurse. Mr. Edogawa will offer you to try one of his concoctions. If you do so you will gain a courage boost. A small boon to ending up tired. NOTE: If you are tired it will go away the night before a full moon and you will also have unlimited stamina. So don't worry about that, the game doesn't let you box yourself into that corner. Sick - The worst of the status' you can have. When you get into fights while tired, or do not properly rest, the character will end up sick. Sick characters are like tired ones, only more vulnerable to criticals and missing their own attacks more often. In addition you can actually get other party members sick, even if they are in good health, simply by going to Tartarus with them and adventuring. It doesn't happen too often but they can catch it from you. If you end up sick avoid Tartarus until you have recovered or it will come back and bite you in the rear. ========================= 5.2. Persona! ========================= The Shield ==================== Each Persona has its own strengths or weaknesses, related to the nature of that particular Persona. So if you have a fire aligned Person he will be either strong, or nullifying, towards fire attacks and likely weak vs. ice or wind type attacks. The strengths and weaknesses will vary depending on the unique individual Persona in question and it can run from between the three physical attacks and eight magic types. Early on in the game you will be lucky to see someone with one strength and one weaknesses but later on you can find Persona without any weaknesses and one or two strengths. Even better than that will be the Persona that have four to six different strengths or nullifications with few if any weaknesses to speak of. Having the right strengths for the right boss fight can make a hard fight fairly simple. ==================== The Sword ==================== Your Second Self is going to be your main tool against the Shadows. While you can use your swords and spears to fight the enemies, magic carries some great benefits to them. Even though you can definitely fight the shadows in melee weapons using your spells has the most beneficial side effect: One More! I will explain this one below. One More! - This system, unique to Persona 3, allows you to take extra combat actions by exploiting your enemies weaknesses. If you are confronting a bird- type Shadow who is weak versus electric attacks, hitting him with a Zio spell will knock it down. When they are down you will be given the option for One More! action. When all enemies are knocked down you will be given the option to initiate an All-Out Attack. All-Out Attack - When all of your enemies have been knocked down by hitting their weaknesses, either in one spell or via Once More!, you will be able to perform this. All of your characters will rush the enemies in a cartoon-like smoke cloud, complete with Bam! and Pow! sound effects. When the assault ends the enemy will have suffered a lot of damage and will be returned to their feet. This is integral to beating some of the later enemies without getting beaten by them. Down - Whenever someone is down, be it a party member or enemy, they will have to spend their next action getting up. However while they are down they will be far more easy to hit, and are succeptible to an All-Out Attack. However any attack that is directed at them will bring them back up to their feet. Due to this it is sometimes more advantageous to actually avoid doing the All-Out Attacks all the time. ==================== The Spells ==================== When picking what Persona to use, more important than their elemental affinity is the particular spells that they learn. Each Persona can have up to eight different spells and each comes with its own set of spells. Most Persona will start off knowing between two to four different abilities and will learn three to six more as they level up. Obviously this means that you need to figure out what spells you want your Persona to have and then gear them towards that. The trick here comes in the facet of fusing Persona. When you fuse two, or more, Persona together the resulting Persona will inherit some spells from its parents. Depending on the type of Persona in question it will change what sort of skills you can inherit and how many of those skills. So if you fuse a fire Persona via a wind and ice Persona it is likely that he will inherit a few of the wind Personas skills, some miscellaneous and maybe, rarely, even a few ice skills. It all depends on the Persona in question. Another thing to keep in mind is that the more skills a Persona has learned of his own natural skills, the more skills he will pass on to any that are fused with him as a component. So a Persona with only one skill of his own to learn will give more skills down to the fused Persona than one with three of its skills left. By fusing a Persona using two, or more, Persona who have learned most or all of their skills they will inherit many useful skills. Then, when they learn more skills as they level up you will be able to pick and choose which of the skills you wish to keep. This ensures that your Persona are custom tailored to your playing style and will have all the skills you want them to have. Of course the major benefit here is getting spells onto a Persona that he might not otherwise have. So it is possible to get Fire Boost on your fire Persona of choice which makes up for what skills that Persona lacked. If you have a high S. Link then it is very possible to max out all of the skills that a Persona can learn really quickly. Contrary to what you might at first think, this isn't a good thing. You want to always have the most up to date, powerful Persona. By constantly keeping the most up to date Persona you can be sure that you will be getting the best spells available as well as the Persona with the highest stats available. By ensuring that your Persona have the highest stats possible as well as the best skills possible and by always shifting what Persona you have you will ensure that you are keeping ahead of the curve in the game. ========================================================= 6.
