Rayman Raving Rabbids
France's biggest hero is imprisoned, and that's not even the funniest part
Words: Justin Leeper, GamesRadar US
What if the hero didn't save the day? What if, instead, he was hoodwinked and mocked by his captors? If Rayman Raving Rabbids on the Wii is any indication, the resulting forecast would be partly innovative with a 95% chance of hilarity. However, the PS2 version - while the same game - ditches all innovation and plays the exact same way you've played any game on the PS2 over the last six years.
Rayman is a prisoner of the insane Rabbids - evil animals that are one part Bugs Bunny, and one part Sloth from The Goonies. He's made to compete in twisted, gladiator-style minigames that demonstrate the sense of humor of Ubisoft's designers.
On the PS2, the left and right analog sticks replace gesturing motions. The left analog stick aims the reticule for plunger-shooting sequences, while the L2 and R2 buttons are used for dancing sequences. However, Rayman isn't nearly as fun without the motion sensitivity. Circling an analog stick with your thumb can't compare to waving your arm around above your head to throw a cow, and beating imaginary drumsticks with the Nunchuk and Wiimote is infinitely more fun than tapping buttons in time to the beat.
The percentage of crummy games is low, but a Labyrinth-style marble maze and a bathroom door-slamming marathon are among them. Thankfully, the ones you see most often - on-rails shooting with a plunger gun and rhythmic disco dancing - are among the best.
