While it's ostensibly a crime movie, The Godfather seems a weird choice for a video-game adaptation. There's violence, sure, but it's far outweighed in screen time by ruminations on familial responsibility, weddings, funerals, grouchy conversations in poorly lit rooms and boiling pots of pasta. That's probably why EA chose to make its version of The Godfather about the Mafia's foot soldiers instead of its stuffy, slow-moving generals. Opening in 1945, the Godfather game follows the plot of the

.hack is back. More than two and a half years since the final installment in the original .hack saga wrapped up, a new story is beginning. Set seven years after the original game - and 11 years from right now - .hack//G.U. presents a world where online gaming has become synonymous with everyday life. If anything, that future world seems more like 11 minutes from now, with controversies over game addiction, game violence and governments monitoring their citizens making up the headlines on its

Sega hands over its precious balls to Travellers Tales, a British developer you probably know from... well, chances are you probably dont know them. The developer has had success with Sega in the past, creating Sonic R and Sonic 3D Blast. That said, the company has crafted more mediocre games than great ones. Should Super Monkey Ball fans be concerned that someone other than Sega is handling their favorite simians? From what weve seen so far, Super Monkey Ball Adventure contains many of

The annual evolution of Madden christens "the season" for every would-be athlete, coach, or super fan trapped inside the sweaty cushions of their couches, and Madden NFL 07 is proving no exception. Due to hit stores in August, 07's overhauls to the interface and - more importantly - the running game are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. In 07, you'll be able to step up as the lead blocker and crush any oncoming attempt to foil your running game, then meld right back into the light feet

Two years. EA Canada spent two whole years locked away in an undisclosed ice fishing shanty, drinking beer and dreaming up the next generation in the NHL franchise. Hockey fans are getting a little tired of the waiting game, but after this year's crazy playoff season, our pitchforks and torches have been hushed momentarily. EA's Summer Showcase brought a little cool to the hot days of July in the form of a very playable NHL 07. From what we witnessed, we may need to relocate our rusty

With all the talk lately about X-Men this and Spider-Man that, it's easy to forget that Marvel isn't the only comic company bringing its stars to game consoles. Warner Bros. Interactive and Action RPG specialists Snowblind Studios are looking to change that. At this year's Comic-Con, we got to play around with the top guns from the DC Universe in the latest build of Justice League Heroes for the Xbox and

Our original preview for Dirge of Cerberus, based on the final Japanese version of the game, suggested - in the nicest possible way - that it might not be that hot. We admitted that it was "a fairly standard third-person run-and-gun adventure." We slid in the suggestion that "it could be argued that the gameplay is incidental to the characters and setting." The game's claim to fame is that it's a Final Fantasy VII spin-off, not that it's a top-shelf shooter, right? That much is obvious. After

Thursday 27 July 2006 If sweeping away clumps of dog hair or mopping up cat pee puts you off ever owning a pet, then The Sims 2: Pets might help. Of course, it's also perfect for Sims fans who want pet action in their daily digital lives - though sadly you can't relocate existing families to this new game. But pet life without the mess isn't to be sniffed at. Sims 2: Pets gives you more animal options than an RSPCA warehouse. Do you want mixed breed or pure breed? Long coat, curly coat? Would

For many seasons, Tiger Woods PGA Tour has relied on an arcade-like feel that gave any player with functional thumbs a -15 handicap. Good news though - from what we saw at Electronic Arts' Summer Showcase, Tiger has shed his quirky strokes and come out swinging the hammer with a more simulation-based method of play. The control scheme has been simplified, taking what worked in the past and applying more realistic effects to make the whole experience come alive. In 07, the entire swing runs off

Tuesday 25 July 2006 Sadly, since its '90s heyday, Formula One has lost a lot of fans. Dull races, Schumacher's 100-year winning streak and too many regulations turned what was once a global phenomenon into a global boreathon. But fortunately for us, the videogame version is still exciting. Last year's Formula One 05 was a surprisingly good racer that kept alive the Formula fun. So here we are with the 06 version. When you load it up, you'll notice how similar it looks to last year's game. The
