Nov 5, 2007 Our industry may thrive on franchises, but for every mega-popular sequel there's bound to be 10 utter failures. Most of these botched follow-ups flounder and die because they're poor games, but would you believe there are (gasp) totally decent sequels that came and went without so much as a pat on the back? Countless sequels have been forgotten, but these are the games that, for one reason or the other, failed to stay in our hearts and minds. Some attained a small level of ... » Read More

Nov 5, 2007 There's a good reason that you didn't notice the PS2 release of Torrente 3: The Protector earlier this year - it's a steaming pile of dog dump. However, after a catalogue of bizarre circumstances led us to play the game recently, we discovered that it has some of the filthiest mini-games ever to soil gaming's undergarments. We're talking about a turbulent tricolour of toilet-based trials - defecation, urination and, yes, masturbation. A movie tie-in based on the adventures of the ... » Read More

Here it is so you can watch it if you must, but we'll wager that you'll be more interested in this footage of Lady Croft under the influence of a nude patch. You're welcome. ... » Read More

Nov 2, 2007 According to trade site MCV, Sony will release a redesigned, cut price PlayStation 2 in early 2008. The MCV report says that the new "compact" model will feature an in-built power supply and will hit US stores in the New Year. It will be priced at $99, $30 less than current PS2 models. A similar price cut in the UK could see the model retail for around £75. The in-built power supply will allow the platform holder to reduce manufacturing costs and retail price, which could ... » Read More

Nov 1, 2007 We gamers have standards when it comes to fashion. It's not like we expect Cloud Strife to be modeling Christian Dior, or Mario to be sporting the latest threads from Burberry, but we do expect that Link wears green, Peach wears pink and you never see Master Chief's face. Sometimes, we relax a little and let a few things slide (come on, Heavenly Sword heroine Nariko was hot in that fake kimono; so what if she prefers double-sided tape to an actual bra?), but then there are the ... » Read More

1 Nov, 2007 The junkie typically resides in the lowest sewers of humanity. Whether crack addict, alcoholic, coke head or speed freak, sustaining a habit of excessive drug taking is a tangle-footed stagger along life's shadiest alleyways with few rewards, but with plenty of broken souls and vomit-stained hardships. In the magical make-believe lands of gaming, however, the pursuit of substance abuse can be indulged without suffering any consequence more severe than a harmless Game Over. Which ... » Read More

Oct 30, 2007 Sometimes a game comes along that makes you sit up and think 'that's awesome'. When that happens, a sequel is inevitable. But some aspects are revised in the name of 'progress' and step away from the original, ever so slightly. Problem is, with every advance, the early magic that made us think it was awesome in the first place is often lost in translation. These are some massive franchises that strayed from their own brilliant path and turned into something else. They may still ... » Read More

Oct 29, 2007 Everyone wants to be a hero. We don't play games to come in second or fawn over other people's abilities - no, we play to win. To conquer. To finish first. That's why all of our favorite characters have such fantastic jobs, from secret agent to bounty hunter to professional demon eater. But what about those poor bastards who make the video game world possible? They get the shit jobs, of course. They're all unremarkable slobs who've failed to stand out in any way whatsoever. ... » Read More

Oct 29, 2007 Last Friday, the cream of the games industry gathered in London town for the Golden Joysticks awards, the only videogame awards voted for by you, the gamers on the ground. And, thanks to real gamers like yourselves, Gears of War walked away with the Ultimate Game of the Year 2007 accolade, beating off competition from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports and Final Fantasy XII. Well done, Epic. GoW's heavy action shooterthon also scored the Xbox Game of the Year 2007 ... » Read More

Oct 26, 2007 Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games News | Features | Screens | Movies There are two key features that make this a must-watch trailer. First, the opening underwater shots of Princess Peach dolphin-kicking are enough to send Francis the nerdy lizard into an epileptic fit. After these opening seconds, the boredom starts to set in, but don't miss the hilarious overdubbed banter from the players. So realistic, it's like they planted a mic in your living ... » Read More

Oct 25, 2007 Sony said Thursday that quarterly operating losses for its games unit had more than doubled, but that it hoped the division would break even or better in the second half of the financial year. The Japanese electronics giant posted a gaming unit operating loss of 96.7 billion yen ($847.6 million) for the quarter ended in September, down 53.2 billion yen year-on-year, which it attributed largely to the price point of its PlayStation 3 console. "In the game segment, operating loss ... » Read More

Oct 25, 2007 Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has described Halo 3 as "Doom 1 in different clothing" in a rant about lack of innovation in videogames. "What I have consistently been concerned about is sort of the repetition and the lack of innovation... as much as I applaud the beautiful, fantastic production guys of Halo 3, it's really Doom 1 in different clothing. Clothing or not, the clothing is nicer, but the game is the same," Bushnell said in an interview with GameTap. "And so is it an ... » Read More

Oct 25, 2007 Ever wanted to be evil? Really evil? Well, then you're mostly out of luck. Videogames are awash with brooding anti-heroes who are gruff and mean but ultimately good, but genuine villains in the lead role are pretty rare. For that matter, the few games with villainous leads tend to defuse them by pitting them exclusively against people who are even worse than they are (Manhunt, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent), or by playing up the whole "evil" angle for laughs (Overlord, Disgaea). Boo to ... » Read More

Oct 22, 2007 The hard part's over. You've finished every mission. You've collected every power up. You've beaten every boss. You've saved the world and probably a few princesses to boot. Now all you want is your reward - some long awaited, richly deserved resolution. You won't find it here. No, these seven games have that other kind of ending. Oct 22, 2007 It's a sad fact of life, but games consoles die. We can still remember people in the playground claiming that their Sinclair Spectrum was still alive when we were playing our Mega Drives and Super Nintendos. They were wrong - every games machine eventually becomes obsolete. But the fact is, developers have usually got the hang of the hardware at the exact moment it loses its shelf viability. The result? Some absolute gems that get released to declining audiences and lost in the ... » Read More

Mass Effect News | Previews | Screens In this interview, Seth Green insightfully points out that Mass Effect is "like a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book." His commentary is uncharacteristically drab, more akin to a cliche-slinging PR drone than a comedic genius. And, we're dying to play his hip-hop RPG "Play the Industry," which will certainly be heckled here ... » Read More

Oct 18, 2007 According to the Entertainment Software Association's 2006 report, 38 percent of gamers are females. These numbers are down from 2005, when the fairer sex reportedly accounted for 43 percent of the pie. It seems that gaming continues to be a mostly male affair, so what's the best way to penetrate this demographic? Judging by the sex-filled ads we've seen over the years, it looks like the best way to a young man's wallet has - and always will be - through his pants. Read on and ... » Read More

Oct 17, 2007 You've seen them on the shelf. You've seen them in the discount bins. You've even seen them proudly displayed in Wal-Mart ads across the country. For whatever reason, these "take care of virtual pets" games are all the rage, from horses to hamsters to, of all things, human babies. But who actually plays these monstrosities?
