November 21, 2007 It's probably a toss up between water and skin for the 'most difficult thing to replicate on a computer'. But at least water effects can look pretty even when they're done unrealistically. So here we look back over how water effects have progressed over the last 20 or so years. If you can't swim, best keep a few feet back from the screen, just in case. Treasure Island Dizzy (1987, Spectrum/C64) Back in the days of the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64, Dizzy was king of ... » Read More

Nov 20, 2007 The female of the species is reportedly deadlier than the male. But judging by the appearance of the Frag Dolls (Ubisoft-sponsored female pro gamers), ‘deadly means ‘clothing optional. In many a publicity event and magazine spread, the Dolls wear tiny hot pants, work out on exercise bikes and say things like, “Breasts and butt only come into play as an advantageous distraction.” Is it sexist? Regardless, its a clichéd, age-old representation of women ... » Read More

Nov 20, 2007 Blizzard, Bizarre, Rockstar, Creative Assembly... These are some of gaming's biggest names in development, with some of the world's best games under their belts. But who owns these brainiac studios? And, more importantly, which publisher has the best collection of in-house devs? We thought we'd find out. We've taken stock of the more notable studios (that is, those devs not condemned to creating endless mobile phone games) and the big-name publishers who pay their wages, issue ... » Read More

Nov 16, 2007 Ghostbusters News Watch the 17 seconds that set the internets on fire. The Ghostbusters game has been the subject of rumor-mongering for years, and we finally have concrete proof that they've, well, designed a logo. It's great news, for sure, but totally underwhelming as a piece of promotional media. Here's to hoping that the next one will actually show a pixel or two of something that's actually in the ... » Read More

Nov 16, 2007 All hail the Internetz! Procrastination has never been so optimized. These cinematic oddballs are the fruits of our Sunday drive out on Al Gore's Info-super-highway. Some are "teh r0x0rz," some are "teh sux0rz," while most fall somewhere into "teh medi0crez." But you can rest assured that when GamesRadar showcases the work of YouTube nutcases, it's certifiably "r0x0rific!" We've scoured the internet for hilarious and just plain weird crap supplied by fellow gamers. So put on your ... » Read More

Nov 16, 2007 Sony is happy at the moment. PS3 sales have almost tripled in the US, and new official figures from Japan have revealed that Sony's console has actually outsold the seemingly unstoppable Wii for the first time ever. For the week ending November 11, Media Create figures put PS3 sales at 55, 924, while Wii only managed 34,546. This is great news for Sony, whose sales were probably helped along by the recent release of Dynasty Warriors 6 - the latest in the mundane hack-'em-up ... » Read More

16 Nov, 2007 Sometimes we like adverts. As long as they're clever. Or arty. Or have got monkeys in. Or ladies that look like they want to touch us in the pants. They're all pretty good. The other kind of advert that we like are old ones. Even if they're completely rubbish - and mostly they are - they still hold a certain irresistible, nostalgic charm. And we're sure 'veteran' gamers will feel inclined to agree as they browse the next few pages, where we've generously gathered a veritable ... » Read More

15 Nov, 2007 So Ghostbusters is definitely happening. And we've captured the very first image. If you haven't already, give your nostalgia gland a poke by pointing your eyes downwards and rejoice in the knowledge that the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man is in the game. The team is back together, with original actors Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson (the one that joins halfway through that no one really remembers even being there when they watched the movie back in 1984) ... » Read More

Nov 14, 2007 Interplay is looking into reviving its portfolio of deceased game franchises, including Earthworm Jim and MDK. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company intends to bring its in-house development studio back from the dead using the money it gained from the sale of Fallout to Bethesda. In a bizarre way then, Fallout 3 could end up causing a flood of rubbish Earthworm Jim cash-ins in the near future. Interplay could also develop its ... » Read More

Nov 14, 2007 Youre not supposed to laugh at someone suffering. But screw the phony bleeding heart sympathy. Theres something undeniably hilarious about people in pain when captured in the right context. 13th Nov 2007 The debate over the relationship (or not) between videogames and violence continues ever onward. Some say games unleash the inner rage-monster in us all, while others advocate them as doing just the opposite, championing them as great fun and great stress relief. If a convincing argument was ever needed for that latter standpoint, its come this week with the announcement of Fun For Our Troops, a new charity initiative which plans to kit out the US military with gaming equipment ... » Read More

Nov 13, 2007 Mini-games are everywhere. Videogames have gotten so big that we no longer bat an eyelid if they contain one or many bite-sized distractions that, twenty years ago, we probably wouldve been paying full price for. Hell, thanks mostly to Nintendos DS and Wii, its no longer a shock to see games made up from nothing but dozens of sub-games. Some mini-games are amazing. Some are generic trash. Some pay heart-patting homage to yesteryear. Some are daft, ill-advised experiments that some ... » Read More

Nov 12, 2007 When it comes to running and jumping, Mario is the undisputed King of Hop. Every five years or so Nintendo gets around to releasing a new platformer, and each and every one is something special. Super Mario Galaxy is the latest in a long, long line of ultra-successful entries, but how does the plumber fare when he's taken out of his hop-n-bop element? Surprisingly well, actually. Despite the choking amount of Mario-related products, many of them are quite good and deserve to be ... » Read More

Nov 6, 2007 The could-actually-be-decent film adaptation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein is on hold until the end of a writer's strike in Hollywood, says writer/director Roger Avary. Speaking to SCI FI Wire, Avary, who also co-wrote Beowulf (the film where Angelina Jolie gets her CGI baps out), said that he "is almost done with the script and am proud of it, but everything as far as the production date and that kind of thing won't be decided on until after all this [is] over. 6 Nov 2007 Inspired by the latest comic offering from the always entertaining Penny Arcade folks (which imagines Assassin's Creed mangled with Animal Crossing to make Assassin's Crossing), we've concocted some of our own harebrained gaming hybrids.
