Our industry may thrive on franchises, but for every mega-popular sequel there's bound to be 10 utter failures. Most of these botched follow-ups flounder and die because they're poor games, but would you believe there are (gasp) totally decent sequels that came and went without so much as a pat on the back?
Countless sequels have been forgotten, but these are the games that, for one reason or the other, failed to stay in our hearts and minds. Some attained a small level of

There's a good reason that you didn't notice the PS2 release of Torrente 3: The Protector earlier this year - it's a steaming pile of dog dump. However, after a catalogue of bizarre circumstances led us to play the game recently, we discovered that it has some of the filthiest mini-games ever to soil gaming's undergarments. We're talking about a turbulent tricolour of toilet-based trials - defecation, urination and, yes, masturbation.
A movie tie-in based on the adventures of the

Ask any seasoned stick-twiddler to name a genuinely original game from the last five years and chances are that the first name that pops into their head is Namco's brilliant Katamari Damacy. Based on the fairly out-there premise of rebuilding the cosmos by rolling around a magical sticky ball, Katamari wooed gamers not just for its innovative core gameplay mechanic, but also its irresistible characters and bonkers style. We fell in love the moment we first saw the intro, which, if

As most everyone on the planet has heard by now, Grand Theft Auto publishers Rockstar made a game called Manhunt 2 that was so gory, they could only get it on store shelves by covering up all the nasty bits. But enterprising hackers have broken into Manhunt 2 and removed the visual filters that covered up all of that nasty stuff.
And luckily for us, they're sharing. We've found a nice, long, completely uncensored version of the video lurking about the interweb's nether regions, so

This gameplay footage is basically Tomb Raider with some dood in the place of Lara Croft. Here it is so you can watch it if you must, but we'll wager that you'll be more interested in this footage of Lady Croft under the influence of a nude patch.
You're welcome.

According to trade site MCV, Sony will release a redesigned, cut price PlayStation 2 in early 2008.
The MCV report says that the new "compact" model will feature an in-built power supply and will hit US stores in the New Year. It will be priced at $99, $30 less than current PS2 models. A similar price cut in the UK could see the model retail for around £75.
The in-built power supply will allow the platform holder to reduce manufacturing costs and retail price, which could

We gamers have standards when it comes to fashion. It's not like we expect Cloud Strife to be modeling Christian Dior, or Mario to be sporting the latest threads from Burberry, but we do expect that Link wears green, Peach wears pink and you never see Master Chief's face. Sometimes, we relax a little and let a few things slide (come on, Heavenly Sword heroine Nariko was hot in that fake kimono; so what if she prefers double-sided tape to an actual bra?), but then there are the

The junkie typically resides in the lowest sewers of humanity. Whether crack addict, alcoholic, coke head or speed freak, sustaining a habit of excessive drug taking is a tangle-footed stagger along life's shadiest alleyways with few rewards, but with plenty of broken souls and vomit-stained hardships.
In the magical make-believe lands of gaming, however, the pursuit of substance abuse can be indulged without suffering any consequence more severe than a harmless Game Over. Which

The first details have been spilled on Rock Band and Guitar Hero creator Harmonix' next project, which will apparently leave the dedicated peripherals of its previous titles behind.
The info comes from a Game Developers Conference 08 session listing for senior designer Chris Foster, in which he'll discuss the challenges of leaving the beat-matching formula of Guitar Hero behind.
The new game, says the listing, will adopt a system where beats are not authored by tech-savvy

Harmonix and Red Octane once worked together to bring Guitar Hero to the world. But now Red Octane president Kai Huang believes that, while there's room for both its own Guitar Hero brand and Harmonix's new Rock Band, Rock Band's "complex" nature means it won't offer what the "mass market" wants.
"With Guitar Hero, we want to make it as broadly appealing as possible, as market, as casual a game as possible," Huang explains. "With Rock Band [it's] slightly different."
