The Top 7... Bloodiest games you've never played

We spew a whole mess of gore-soaked games you've never heard of - and we do mean mess

5.  Guwange - Atlus, 1999 - Arcade

You've never heard of this one unless you've spent a lot of time in Japanese arcades. But through the magic of emulation - and our "hellacious amount of carnage" radar - we happened upon this oddball coin-op and fell in love with it's unique approach to medieval Japanese ultraviolence.

Picture a vertical shooter like 1942 or Raiden, replace the airplane with a flying samurai, change all the enemy tanks to enemy cavalry, people, and ox carts and destroy destroy destroy. Those mounted warriors and the horses they rode in on simply explode in clouds of red only to leave a splotch of gore behind.

Above: Yeah, the explosions in Guwange actually look more like red fireballs than blood, but give 'em a break - it was 1999.

The "bad" guys also give up hundreds of levitating coins for reasons that aren't really clear, but we have to admit that slaughtering enemies and taking their money just feels that much more satisfying than merely slaughtering them.

Shadow of Rome was an amazing game but kinda felt immature with the gore... like it was there olny gimick. Would have been an amazing game if i could take it seriously.

Just goes to show that anything in excess eventually becomes hilarious. I don't know why No More Heros wasn't on this list (the uncensored U.S. version at least), and it's too bad Madworld wasn't released in time for this article, it would fit right in.

@ericairasole : In the beginning of the article, it says that it would address the games that were more obscure, as opposed to more mainstream ones.

I'm pretty sure GoW 1 and 2 fall under the "mainstream" category.

Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix is freaking amazing. I still play the multiplayer on that game. The single player is still entertaining to me.
