MLB 07: The Show

Gladly taking the long and winding road to the big leagues

Plenty of other modes return from last year - season, franchise, “classic” career, rivalry, online, and more - and if you’re a series vet you already know how solid they are. Gameplay is smooth as butter, showing off years of development coming together beautifully. Needless to say, there’s enough content packed in here to keep armchair GM’s busy for ages. We want to be part of the research team that got to nail down so many picture-perfect player-specific animations; from Pat Burrel’s knee-dip to Nomar Garciaparra’s obsessive-compulsive hitting ritual, we were continually amazed by the loving detail on display.

It’s not quite baseball perfection - why the fielding buttons are different in the Career mode versus every other one is beyond us - yet The Show is a rollicking good time. With a little luck, your own would-be Joe Shlabotnik can finally make it in the big time, and walk off the field as a champion. If not, there’s always that managing gig in Stumptown.

You'll love
  • Brilliant career mode
  • Mature, smooth gameplay
  • Superb player mannerisms
You'll hate
  • Confounding goal judgment
  • Antiquated controls
  • Inconsistent fielding buttons
