Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Snake finally gets online in this packed director's cut

Good things come to those who wait, and by now, anyone who knows Metal Gear Solid should know that if you hold off on buying the latest title in the stealth-action franchise, a better version comes out a year or so later. It happened with Metal Gear Solid: Integral (in Japan, at least), again with Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and now it's happening with Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.

Unlike the last couple of retreads, however, Subsistence actually has something more than a few goofy extras to lure back people who bought Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The infamous skateboarding minigame from Substance is sadly gone, but in its place is something much better: a robust multiplayer mode that finally takes the series' stealth action online.

The new online mode lets players choose from three different teams (Ocelot Unit, KGB and GRU), and features five different match types: Capture (think "the flag," or in this case an adorable froggy thing called the Keroton), the usual deathmatch and team deathmatch modes, and Sneaking, where one player plays as Snake and has to steal something from the other players. Then there's Rescue, where one team has to defend a rubber duckie and the other has to destroy it. This mode is unique in that it ends when either team is eliminated, and the "dead" players can roam around as ghosts and make noises to annoy their enemies.
