With all the fuss surrounding a couple of amazing PS3 shooters recently - Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 3 (maybe you’ve heard of them?) - the absence of one of the traditional big hitters of WWII gaming, the Medal of Honor series, has hardly been noticed. These titles always epitomized the Hollywood vision of Second World War shooters - rammed with big explosions and amazing set-pieces.

Remember that dramatic Saving Private Ryan-inspired beach assault opening in Medal of Honor: Frontline? It was one of PS2’s all-time must-see gaming moments. Still, with the evolution of WWII shooters and the rising dominance of the Brothers in Arms and Call of Duty series, is there any room for another Medal of Honor game on the battlefield?

Perhaps that’s an unfair question. Medal of Honor Vanguard is the PS2-specific version of Medal of Honor Airborne, which is due for PS3. Both games follow the US 82nd Airborne Division as the unit forges its reputation in the latter years of the Second World War. In Vanguard, you’ll take the role of a young gun named Frank Keegan, as you battle your way to victory through four historically based operations: Husky, Neptune, Market Garden and Varsity.
