We've already ranked our Top 7 favorite Final Fantasy games but now it's all about the spinoffs. With the release of Final Fantasy XIII-2 this week, we decided to go back and look at all the games that were not part of the main series...
It may not be Halloween just yet, but you can at least start prepping yourself early. To help get you in the mood, we’ve brought together some of our favorite Halloween-themed content from across the gaming spectrum in one video. Only a few games over the years have actually taken place on the last day of October (although) some MMOs like to live it up with awesome Halloween celebrations, but plenty of gamers have picked up the slack by creating their own custom content with mods for some of their favorite games. We’ve pulled together some of the best of both, sotake a look and re-live some old favorites (or discover some new ones)!
Ten years ago today, Sony released what would go on to become the world’s best selling game console. With 140 million units in people’s homes and games released to this very day, it’s lived the longest and healthiest life of any games machine we can think of. But what made it such an unparalleled success? How did Sony leave all its competitors in the dust when so many of that generation’s biggest hits were multiplatform releases?
We can answer that, of course. But in doing so we also trumpet how truly amazing the system was, which makes this the perfect article to celebrate the most well-rounded console of all time...
If you should take away anything from the last few days of this weeklong anniversary feature, it’s that the PS2 is damn near unstoppable. 10 years after its North American launch, the thing is still on store shelves, with new games still produced every so often. But while the PS2’s story doesn’t end with 2006 or 2007, these were the years when the PS3 debuted and rose to prominence, and the industry’s interest was correspondingly pulled toward current-gen, HD-enabled consoles.
Even with increasing competition from the new breed, though, the PS2 still had a few massive hits left in it – just not as many as we’d gotten used to. So, rather than stretch 2006 and 2007’s relatively thin PS2 lineups out over two days, or drag things out into the PS2’s increasingly dry twilight years (post-2007, it’s been tough to find 10 decent PS2 games, let alone 10 great ones), we’re going to finish out our recognition of the black box's best with the collective bang of the last two years it spent at the front of the pack...
Sony seems to be on something of an HD remake kick lately. This week finally brought us long-awaited confirmation that the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection will head our way sometime next year; with last year’s God of War Collection and the upcoming Sly Collection, that brings to three the number of classic PS2 series Sony’s retrofitting with 1080p visuals and Trophies, before re-releasing as budget-priced PS3 games.
This is a trend we can really get behind; as much as we love our old PS2 games, we can barely stand to look at them anymore. Give them a makeover so they don’t look crap on our new TVs, though, and we’re all over them. With that in mind, here are a few other series from the last generation we’d love to see resurrected for the modern age of HD consoles...

The adventure genre should probably get the award for best ghost pirate of all time (Monkey Island's LeChuck), but the award for most prolific use of both ghosts and pirates in a genre has to go to RPGs. RPGs were overdoing the pirate thing well before pirates were overdone as a general fad. And any RPG fan knows that it's not a real quest until you've encountered a ghost ship as either a dungeon or a boss. Naturally, these two mainstays overlap from time to time...
You know that friend nobody likes? The one that keeps showing up because no one’s told him to buzz off? That’s what water levels are to videogames. Upon arrival, they kill the mood and alienate anyone who was on the fence about staying or leaving. In short, they tend to ruin the entire flow of a game that’s otherwise just fine, and very few titles have been able to do liquid environments right.

Have a seat, children… Now, I know you thought Mickey, Ariel and Pinocchio would last forever, but the harsh reality of gaming is that all characters must eventually die. Often it seems like God is being cruel, yet it’s a fact that anything with a health bar will eventually perish.
We hear you kids in the back: “Disney is nothing but kiddy bullshit! There’s no way Kingdom Hearts can be hardcore with Mickey Mouse in it.” Really, mister? Then you have no sense of history and you’re about to get some. Wipe away those knee jerk images of princesses and dancing cats - we’re about to expose the bloody, black powder underbelly of Disney’s hardcore legacy of sheer brutality!
