PS2 to lose Final Fantasy exclusives

Square Enix look set to end era of Sony-only games for next-gen

Square Enix, the makers of Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest, look set to end their exclusive deal with Sony, preferring to produce their games for Xbox 360, Revolution and PS3.

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has hinted that since the next round of the console war won't be dominated by one machine, his company need to sell their titles on as many formats as possible.

Speaking to Japanese newspaper Mainichi Daily News, he said: "The market for next generation game consoles will be divided into 'high end' and 'low end' according to the wishes of users, so rather than one type of hardware surging ahead, the share will be divided between various game consoles."

Square had previously announced that will appear on Xbox 360, but the intention to publish their hugely popular RPGs on all the next-gen consoles is a major surprise for fans and a huge boost for Nintendo and Microsoft.

Final Fantasy XI is already out on PC and should appear on Xbox 360 and PS2 later this year
