The history of PS2 Star Wars games

The force was with a few titles at least

The history of PS2 Star Wars games is a turbulent one. Let GamesRadar be your tracking computer in this trench of occasional gaming excrement, guiding you through the good titles and the bad ones.

First, the good:

Star Wars: Battlefront (2004) - PS2
Combining fast-paced, large-scale combat with a thin slither of strategy, Battlefront was the game that single-handedly proved that Star Wars videogames didn’t have to suck. Admittedly, it worked better as an online multiplayer game - or at least, that’s what our Xbox-playing cousins always told us - and the artificial intelligence bordered on the insulting, but it was still top-notch.

Best bit: The Galactic Conquest mode, which has you fighting through a vast, galaxy-wide military campaign.

LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game (2005) – PS2

Get this: the key characters and events from the three prequel movies (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) are retold exclusively via the medium of the LEGO brick. Not actual LEGO either. Polygons made to look like LEGO. Incredibly, against all the expectations, it was absolutely amazing.

Best bit: The final level’s stunning and disturbing recreation of Anakin’s transformation into Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005) – PS2; PSP
Battlefront returned with greatly improved graphics, beefed-up artificial intelligence and an even better single-player Campaign mode. Brilliantly, for the first time in the series you could play as the Hero characters, allowing you to experience the thrill of combat from the perspective of Boba Fett, Princess Leia, or General Grievous. All we need now is a brand-new installment on PS3…

Best bit: Stomping into battle as Darth Vader, then getting squashed by a Rebel vehicle. Even for the most evil man in the universe, life sometimes really sucks.
