QOTW: What dead company or franchise do you miss the most?

Answer our weekly question and check out our favorite user answers from last week!

Words: Tyler Wilde, GamesRadar US

Every week the hosts of TalkRadar present and answer a new "Question of the Week" - a personal inquiry which unearths some of our deepest, and sometimes most sinister, gaming memories. Everyone is encouraged to answer each week's question, so go ahead, tell us your most glorious, nostalgic, or shameful story!

This week's question:

What dead company or franchise do you miss most?

What defunct game company or franchise are you most sorry to see go? The company may not even be out of business - it may have just strayed so far from its original vision that you consider it dead (likewise with franchises).

Answer this week's question in the comments!

Questions can also be answered in the QOTW forum thread. Our favorite posts this week will be read next week on TalkRadar 58, and appear in the next edition of this article. Listen to TalkRadar 57 on Friday for our answers!

Last week's question:

What overused gameplay element are you terribly sick of?

As usual, thanks for all of your responses! QTEs ("interactive cutscenes"), timed levels,  back-tracking, waggle, collectables, bullet time, and oversimplified morality systems were among the most hated gameplay elements mentioned, and for the most part, we couldn't agree more. We did see a lot of turn-based strategy haters, though, and since yours truly is a big Civilization fan: shuddup!

Below are a few of last week's answers that tickled our collective fancies, but since we can't feature them all here, check out last week's article and forum thread for more...

"I would have to say those games, where you see your character doing all this cool shit, all this matrix-esque fighting, then when you play he's like Marcus Fenix with a ton of bricks on his back. It's just plain Dumb"

"I absolutely HATE meaningless challenges/time trials in any game...it's hard for me being such an achievement whore. I hate saying "Ok...I'll give this challenge/time trial a try" and then ending up in the fetal position, having hit the retry button 30 billion times and still a point or a second off from getting that fucking gold metal!"

Amnesiac wrote...
"_____ Time. Bullet Time, Assassin Time, Witch Time, Adrenaline Time, Focus Time, Super Dee-Duper Slo-Mo Time, it's all the same goddamn thing. Apparently developers think that if they give it some fancy name, we'll think it's new and fresh. They're wrong.

That and pointless good/bad morality choices. It's bad enough when they're the InFamous brand of obvious black-and-white choices, but putting them in there just for the sake of having an extra features bullet point when they don't even affect the gameplay (aside from two marginally different endings) is even worse."

Above: You forgot Tequila Time!

"Hidden Collectables. I don't want to shoot 200 pidgeons, or collect flags, or collect the stupid materials in Mass Effect. Does anyone ever collect things without using a guide? If you did I bet you didn't enjoy it one bit. I BET! Even when I find one I sometimes won't pick it up out of fear that it'll cause me to **** up in finding them all later when I use a guide to do it. You all know the paranoid feeling when you turn up to a spot to find something and its not there. Did I get it already? Or am I reading the guide wrong!??!?!?"

zymn wrote...
"i'm going to have to say timed sequences. sure, once you actually play them, it's usually the first time you get through. but the frustration of falling off a ledge or missing a jump can really make the veins in my head pop, because the pressure is so intense on me for some reason. i see "GET OUTTA THERE" and i'm like "AW CRAP I BETTER GET OUTTA HERE" then "WAIT. IS THAT... A TIMER?! NOOO!!"

KillDrone wrote...
"Escort missions; you don't see them too often in top dollar games, but they still exist and they are still a huge pain in the ass. The real problem with them is that you generally have to escort someone who is completely incapable of defending themselves, prefers to stand directly in the line of fire, or continuously ends up dieing through sheer stupidity and bad AI."

Aliens Online - My first downloadable game and MMOG. One of the best.
Dungeon Keeper - Overlord eases the pain though.

I know nintendo is still here but they are dead to me. I grew up playing nintendo, my first system was a super nintendo I got when I was four, then I got a 64,then a gameboy color, then I got a gamecube, but when nintendo released the wii everything I loved went away. Some people might argue and say nintendo is still the same, but it will never be like while I was growing up playing James Bond, Doom, Rampage, and all those other good titles. I also hate the new controls.

I MISS THE OLD CRASH BANDICOOT!!!!! One of gaming's most original, revolutionary, and just plain funnest (most fun, for u grammerfreaks) series of games. The first 3 games, (Crash Bandicoot, CB 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and CB: Warped) were the best platformers. ever. no two levels are alike, each game brings dozens of new features to the table, and combines both 3d and 2d platforming (as well as the world's only badass character who likes to explore [Im looking at you sonic.]). then Travellers Tales got the rights to develop the game and ever since then IT SUCKED!!!!! maybe after Uncharted 2 naughty dog will go back to its' roots (fingers crossed)

Ubisoft has just gone downhill with most of their franchise. Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell are just sucking now.

Fresh Games had a great selection of games they made, the most memorable being Mr. Mosquito and my favorite Legaia 2. The Legaia franchise had one of the best battle system.

It's too bad that they were mostly buried under every other company.

As far as dead franchises go, i really would kill to get another Zone of the Enders and a new Musashi title. Twisted Metal too but i hear that's in the works. I would love to get Working Designs back and a true, proper Squaresoft. Square and Enix were so much better when they were separate. As good as FF13 looks like its going to be i miss Sakaguchi and the original Final Fantasy team.

Carmageddon all the way. Such classic games. Certainly in need of a current gen update or remake; there's just nothing else quite like them.

I loved Gta 4, Absoloute classic
but what happened to San Andreas?
What happened to gaining muscle, robbing houses and Flying planes, i mean i went from flying planes, to buying hot dogs.
I still loved gta 4 but come on, I want to fly a plane again
I'll never get the chance in real life :(

Well, i'll have to say Medievil, i mean who doesn't miss Sir Dan Fortesque? He is one of my most memorable video game characters, i wish we could finish his story, or maybe kick start a new one with a new game on the current consoles, i would love to see him brought to glory in Hi-Def. So yeah Medievil all the way ^.^

Dino Crisis of course. That last one for the Xbox just murdered it but the first two were the best dino vs human games I've ever played.

I could give you a couple. I miss Acclaim, had like 10 of there games. I miss 3DO, those Armymen games were so much fun. We would always do multiplayer and love it! I miss a bunch out of Westwood studios. Ever since they had to be merged into EA, the Command and Conquer series just hasn't been the same for me...

As far as franchises....We need more fighters like ClayFighter, that game was so much fun, so was Killer Instinct and Primal Rage. Great fighting games back in the day. And what about Lemmings?.. That game was a ton of fun. And Earthworm Jim? the Craziest Character ever... I miss those franchises. And I'll just throw this out there, but I played a game call Metal Warriors by Lucus Arts, and that was one of my favorites for the SNES. I would love it if they remade that. =D
