Sony hosted a pretty awesome Buzz! charity event at the PlayStation lounge last night. Sixteen players from various media outlets (Joystiq included) partook in the competition. The winner would be able to send $5,000 to a charity of their choice, courtesy of Sony.

Along with titles like EyeToy and SingStar, Sony's Buzz! line of quiz games for the PlayStation 2 have been part of a concerted effort on the part of the electronics giant to court a more mainstream audience with its gaming console. However, one company already well established in serving that sector's trivia needs thinks Sony's family friendly is a little too familiar.

Carlsbad, California-based Buzztime Entertainment has filed suit against Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in the Southern District of California, alleging that the Buzz! line of games and the "It's time to get buzzing" tagline violate several of its own trademarks.

What's the most successful trivia game to appear on a video-game console?

It's a trick question.

There's never been a really popular console trivia game. Even popular franchises like "Trivial Pursuit" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" have been unable to make the jump.

Computer trivia buffs have it better, thanks to "You Don't Know Jack," "Jeopardy!" and dozens of online question-and-answer competitions.

But publishers seem to feel that mayhem-loving console gamers won't slow down for more cerebral activity.

So it's kind of surprising that we've seen three new trivia video games - one each for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Wii - over the last few months.

Could any of them be as satisfying as filling in that last piece of "Trivial Pursuit" pie during your family game night?
