The character model matters so much less than the gameplay it isn't funny. It's a great picture. I also don't care how often they want to reinvent a character who was fictional to begin with. It's not like anyone's setting a precedent with that. I'll start getting judgmental about the game once the hands-ons start rolling in.

Besides, death in a game so cute would be incongruous to the point of upsetting. I could just watch the video over and over because it makes me smile so much. Halo Reach (Xbox 360): Samsung advert features Master Chief. Or does it?
Sometimes I wonder if companies do this to bait others into giving them free PR. A huge company like Microsoft taking legal action against another huge company like Samsung is going to make some mainstream media. Google searches for "MS sues Samsung" go through the roof. It becomes a trending topic on Twitter. Then YouTube searches for "Samsung Galaxy S commercial" go crazy until Samsung finally relents and pulls the ad. But the publicity for them is orders of magnitude greater than a "normal" commercial. ...there's your tinfoil hat theory for the day.

Splatterhouse (Xbox 360): New Splatterhouse trailer plays on Splatterhouse nostalgia, but does such a thing actually exist?
Really, why wouldn't they want to give a nod to their roots? If they didn't want to be tied to the originals, they wouldn't have called the game Splatterhouse, and probably would've rolled with some significantly different character models and such. I always think that the difference between "good" schlocky and "bad" schlocky is the level of self-awareness. And by recognizing its basis in middling (at best) 16-bit side-scrollers, Splatterhouse is showing that it's quite self-aware. I agree with other sentiments, though. The game can't hang its hat on nostalgia. Especially since the game was so average to begin with. It needs to have some creative combat, big gameplay twists, and/or be balls-hard like the upper tier action games today, or it might as well be a PSN/XBLA/Steam title. I do hope the final product shows us something different like that. I liked Splatterhouse as an IP too, and do feel it was woefully underused. I'm feeling optimistic about the atmosphere at least, and the way everything animates gives the impression that the controls are smooth and responsive. Now if it shows that little extra, I'll tip over from optimistic to stoked.

Would you pay to be better at games?
I actually see this as giving legitimacy to gaming as a pastime. People all over take lessons to improve at their hobbies, without any final goal in mind. I took swimming lessons, piano lessons, went to baseball camps and clinics, and it's not like I'm doing anything with those activities. At the very least, it's no worse than pottery or scrapbooking classes. At best, it's another step gaming makes towards cultural normalcy, rather than the time-and-money-wasting hobby of socially inept losers.

I get it. Orchestral arrangements > major recording artist singles. Didn't this come up in another recent feature? And for that matter, doesn't this come up every time a song performed by a name that happens to show up on Billboard from time to time is used to promote a game? What I don't get is why any game journalist would bother giving this kind of thing any dedicated thought, rather than cynically dismissing it for what it is: an unapologetic marketing move, a cash in on the mixing of two pieces of popular media that happen to have some congruent demographics. ...unless that's actually what you're doing, and this article is fully having us on. I like how the "console" to win the battle of "Which console will win Fall 2010?" is the only thing on the list that isn't a console. I also like how all it's apparently good for is gaming, despite being the most versatile piece of hardware out of everything in this article. But what I like the most is how the article pervades the stereotype of the snotty PC gamer who thinks his chosen platform is unequivocally superior, and people would only disagree with him because they are mentally handicapped.
