Why the latest PS3 crack is disastrous for Sony and for gamers
The entertainment industry has a history of being incredibly short sided when it comes to the implementation of technology and new media as a way to make its product more accessible to the masses. According to the Movie industry some decades ago, the VHS was going to be the death of the film industry. How many years ago was it the music industry said mp3's were going to ruin them. Now, the gaming industry is focused on piracy and DRM. I have a simple suggestion that those who are forward thinking are already adopting; but, most will wait a decade before realizing. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX ON THIS ONE!!!!! Offer your catalog of older games that no one buys anymore for a $5 download as a way to supplement your revenue long after release. Let people "Own" the right to the digital media they buy in a way that they can later resell it if they want. Provide additional layers of access to the content customers buy so they can enjoy the media in any format they want. Ask "Goodoldgames.com", Any used store, Steam, a convenience store that sells bottled water, or any movie sale where they include a digital copy if these things work. If Sony focused on ways to drive value to their customers instead of controlling access, I promise they would see market share and eventually profitability increase substantially...along with a funny thing called customer loyalty. People will pay for value, and ease of use.
