@Bamford38: "The only solace i can take from this is that im proud to be in the 70 thousand people that value originality, rather that the millions of people that are basically sheep." So you bought Shadows of the Damned because of its originality. Technically it's an original property, but when I look at it I see just a bunch of clichés mashed together with a typical Japanese action game style I know I don't like. I'm quite sure I would not enjoy it. I don't fear originality (I was one of the first to buy Mirror's Edge, etc.) but I just don't see anything in SOTD to entice me to try it. I've bought some of the recent Call of Duty games because they were incredibly polished, fun games with tight gameplay mechanics. Does that make me a sheep? Maybe, but then sheep often flock together because they know where to find good grass and safety, while the lone, lost sheep gets trapped somewhere in barbed wire. (Trust me, my family used to rear sheep and they look a lot more stupid when they run off doing their own thing than when they flock together. But maybe I'm stretching the analogy... :D ) |

All the default Shepards (male and female) look too young and inexperienced. The core of Shepard's character is his/her natural leadership forged through great struggles, and I just don't see that coming from a good-looking 28-year-old. That's why my Shep looks like he's about 40, with a proper military haircut and a face that says "I've seen shit you wouldn't believe, so back off!" |

Roger Ebert: I was wrong, I don't have enough experience of games |
I find myself frustrated by the confusion between "is it art?" and "is it good art?". Defining "art" is relatively simple: anything that has been designed and crafted is a form of art. Where it gets more complicated is where we attempt to judge whether something is "good art", using measurements like aesthetics, message, originality, efficiency, etc. Of course games are art. That shouldn't even be up for debate. We ought to be focusing on the question of which games represent "good art", in the same way that film critics search for the best representatives of the medium. |

4 genuine reasons why games are better than art |
In my opinion, art is anything that has been designed, and its quality can be measured in aesthetics, function, imagination, message, and - crucially - purpose. I think that this way you can be objective about what IS art, but still have good debate about what is GOOD art - that is, how well it achieves its purpose. I think that only a definition like this allows one to accept games, tables, cars, music, skyscrapers and messy beds all as art, while still offering one latitude to say that Tracy Emin is crap. |

But let me tell you, Britain has plenty of stereotypes well-known within our fair shores! -London metropolitan type -uneducated feral youth gang -East End gangster -regular chaps who part-time aspire to be suicide bombers -dozy chap from Somerset -cheese-chasing country bumpkin -incomprehensible Welsh nationalist -army major who pines for the old empire -harmless parish vicar -suspicious shop owner in small village -immigrant corner-shop man -sleazy politician -striking union man ...and the list of stereotypes goes on and on. Are video games really sexist? |
@Jacob816 & SuperBadnik: I think characters like Lara Croft can come off as being sexist because they seem to say: "a female character can only be appealing if she is sexually desirable to men". Like the gun-toting male bastards, these female characters seem to exist only to satisfy some parody of adolescent fantasies. That is what's sexist: the characters are essentially servile and pandering. Characters in video games need to appear to have a reason for being other than extreme violent release or sexual titillation. They need to have those elements toned down and appear to be people who are valuable for other qualities. When describing characters to other people, it will be nice when the first words that pop into our minds are ones like "scoundrel, renegade, brave but sometimes vulnerable" rather than "massive bazookas" (for either gender). |

I transformed into a magical super-geek with Star Wars: KOTOR on PC. I played through it about 8 or 9 times, each time learning the best possible equipment and stats upgrades. Now, under D&D3 rules, changes to character stats only count on even numbers. So, on my final playthrough, having memorized everything I needed, I was able set my starting stats - right at the beginning of the game - such that, with all the upgrades from equipment, leveling-up and Force alignment bonuses, with all the many combinations of even and odd numbers, all my stats ended up on even numbers by the end of the game! It was a feat of statistical perfection! Sadly, the Statistical Perfection feat was not one of the available options upon levelling-up in the game. |

Tyler, I had the same thing with Link To The Past. I got it when I was 11, and I got to the final boss, Ganendorf in his true form. I was able to hit him with three silver arrows. I thought that would be enough (three is usually the magic number). I never found out how many hits it took to kill him. I also picked it up years later on an emulator, and even with the advantage of save states I never finished it. More recently, my most damning failure-to-finish is probably Lego Star Wars. I tried to play it through with my girlfriend, but we both got so tired of the annoying snowspeeder section in the Empire Strikes Back that we never persisted with it. How lame is that? |
